A difficult in-law relationship can test even the strongest marriages, especially when one person feels like they are fighting the battle alone.

Many people try to ignore hurtful comments for the sake of their family, but there is a limit to how much someone can endure before resentment starts taking over.

For Redditor OP, that limit came after years of being criticized and accused by her mother-in-law.

From parenting choices to personal decisions, she felt nothing she did was ever good enough.

When another painful accusation was brought up during a family gathering, years of frustration finally came out.

Read on to find out what happened after she confronted her husband and made a life-changing decision.

Wife reaches her breaking point after years of criticism from her MIL and lack of support from her husband

Mother-in-Law Spent 17 Years Accusing Her of Cheating, Until One Comment Finally Ended the Marriage
not the actual photo

'After being 17 years of being gaslight, Accused of cheating and slandered with no help from STBX I'm telling him I want a divorce?'

I've been with my husband for 20 years , Married 16 years ago but had our first

child 17 years ago which is when the trouble started. I at the time wanted to

keep the piece I just had our first kid and wanted to give everyone their time with the baby.

I learned real quick I was very disliked by MIL. Everything I did was wrong even

the simple things of putting a cup on a table and it was wrong . A couple

months after have our first I went to the gym but when MIL found out she

started telling people and my husband I was doing it for attention or possibly

cheating. My husband knew I wasn't cheating, I never gave him a reason to

believe so and I wasn't going to either. After a couple months I quit going to

the gym and started going on morning jogs which turned into ' Your an awful

and selfish human being for going on a run and leaving the baby behind' and

'It doesn't matter it's not like you'll get rid all the baby weight anyway. I always

felt the need to apologise because she made me feel crazy.

Baby 2 was mainly the same about everything I did and about exercise. After

having baby 3 this was when my oldest had started cheer and I had made some

friends with the other mom's. We occasionally had a night out leaving our SO's

with our kids. Again MIL told people I was attention seeking or most likely

cheating (Because that's what women did on their night outs.) In MIL words it

was most likely true since how I treated my husband. Not true at all in all

honesty given the state I was in at the time I thought I marriage was great we

had a pretty good relationship. But after her slandering again I stopped

hanging out with my friends because I didn't want them to be dragged into

anything. Instead we bought gym equipment and I used it regularly MIL hated I

kept myself in shape always saying 'Well you won't always be skinny, So enjoy it while you can.

Now 4 years after that I had our forth this was at a point I had started fighting

back, Anything I said as fact, MIL would argue I'm wrong and I'd bring up my

phone and read the fact out loud. Every single kids birthday she turned it into

a competition of how much more money she spent or she'd look at me raise

and say 'You sure your kid wanted that'. Yes MIL I'm sure, Since you know I

asked. Shed argue over every holiday making sure she got to see the kids. She

would bad mouth me to my kids then get mad at me stepping it and confronting her.

Every visit with her I now no longer prepared my house since it was never

good enough for her. I always was in a bad mood when she visited because it

was just a 'Mom is visiting today's My husband never argued with his mom,

never let me get a say in if she visits. She always would tell me I put on weight

every visit then say 'Looks like the exercise isn't helping' truth was I didn't

actually put weight on, if I did it was barely noticeable.

Lastly and the thing that broke me is this week at FIL's birthday when talking

about happy memories MIL randomly brings up how I never went to her

birthday 5 years ago, Then again claimed I must have been cheating and

claiming how I unfairly I treated my husband. I know she was Gaslighting me

but I asked her when I had ever been rude to her son her excuse "Well how

could I not, Look at how you treat me". Then she brought how the kids didn't

really look like my husband. I told her I'd get a DNA test then cut her off from

the kids. She scoffed, So I brought up how she believed I was so rude to her

when she'd done nothing but slander and say I had been cheating for years, And she denied it all.

This is when I made my family leave. On the way home I let everything out in

front of my husband and told him off for ever standing up for me. It wasn't the

best idea that my kids heard me talk to MIL that way or my husband but I

couldn't help myself. I'm done I've been put through years of abuse from this

woman. I went from a young woman trying be nice and get her to like me to some who doesn't care anymore.

I may have thought years ago my husband was great but now looking back it

has become obvious and from what he had previously told me his mom has

always been this way, He never has stood up for himself. I can't stay married to

him because it's damaging mentally as well as the kids. I need to protect us not

let them go through this anymore. I no longer feel attracted to this man it isn't

worth fixing things over. I'm telling him I want a divorce to night.

UPDATE: After spending a day reading everyone's comments I went forward

and told my husband how I felt about him and out marriage. We made an

agreement to both go to individual counseling for a month before going to marriage counselling.

He thinks we can work on our marriage once both of our minds have cleared

up a bit. I don't really have much hope to be honest I only gave in at the time

so I could get the kids and myself some counselling before I go forth with the

divorce. Maybe it's just me but I feel like if I got the divorce before receiving

counselling and given my most recent outburst's it could hurt me in custody arrangements.

We managed to hold things together before MIL texted me to say my STBX

wouldn't be getting any type of counselling and I was the one who needed

help after yelling at him and her a couple days ago. She told me I had caused

issues then yelled at everyone else. She also found it funny how I thought her

son would tell her off after she pointed out several truths. He believed her and

for his piece he was staying with her because I needed to think about my actions.

I texted her back that her son was the one who wanted the marriage

counselling in the first place but it didn't matter anymore and he could stay

with her as long as he wants. She sent a smiley face back right away before I

blocked her. Texted my husband to tell him I'm done since he told his mom. He hasn't responded.

So now I'm going down the divorce road and getting my kids (And myself)into counselling.

Sometimes the deepest wounds in a relationship are not caused by one dramatic moment, but by years of small comments that slowly change how someone sees themselves.

Being constantly questioned, criticized, or made to defend normal choices can leave a person feeling like they are always failing, even when they are doing their best.

In OP’s story, the issue was never simply about her mother-in-law disliking her. It was about years of feeling unsupported while trying to build a family.

From exercising after childbirth to spending time with friends, OP’s ordinary actions were repeatedly interpreted through suspicion and criticism.

Over time, she began changing her behavior not because she believed she was wrong, but because she wanted to avoid conflict.

The emotional exhaustion came from constantly trying to prove she was a good wife and mother to someone who seemed determined not to see her that way.

A different perspective is that this story is not only about a difficult MIL. It is also about what happens when a partner remains neutral during ongoing family conflict.

Many people focus on the person making hurtful comments, but the silence of the person in the middle can become equally painful.

OP was not only fighting against criticism from her MIL; she was also carrying the disappointment of feeling that her husband never stepped forward to protect their marriage.

Family conflicts often become complicated because some people are conditioned to avoid upsetting a parent.

A child who grows up managing a difficult parent may learn that keeping the peace feels safer than challenging them.

However, once that person creates their own family, the priority has to shift.

A spouse and children should not feel like they are competing for emotional safety.

This insight helps explain why OP eventually reached a breaking point. Her reaction was not created by one conversation at a birthday party.

It came after nearly two decades of feeling judged, unsupported, and forced to tolerate behavior that hurt her.

The final confrontation was the release of years of frustration that had never been properly addressed.

At the same time, the future of the marriage depends on more than whether OP is angry at the moment.

Counseling can help reveal whether there is still a foundation of trust and whether both partners are willing to change old patterns.

A healthy marriage requires more than love; it requires protection, loyalty, and the willingness to choose each other when outside pressures appear.

OP’s story highlights an important truth: maintaining peace at any cost is not the same as having peace.

Sometimes protecting a family means finally acknowledging the pain that has been ignored for too long.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These commenters argued that OP’s husband lost her respect by failing to stand up to his mother and protect their marriage

Special_Lychee_6847 − There's some valuable advice in the comments already.

But I'm going to add some mind tricks. Instead of going nuclear on your

husband, add in that you feel sorry for him, and you can't respect him

anymore, because he is completely dominated by his mother.

It's hard to feel protected and cherished, by a man that squirms and bends

down to an old hag that has no loving bone in her body, and spews nothing

but bitterness. You know she does it because she feels insecure, and she is just

a sad old lady, that is so scared of being left alone.

And he listens to her as if she can lead an army into battle. It's so sad and

embarrassing. You need your kids to have a stronger role model. And every

time you try to be a strong role model, his mommy tears you down, because

she is too insecure to see a strong woman. And he goes along with the scared little mouse.

Your kids are surrounded by cowards. And you need better for them. The DNA

test? Do it. And make your husband and his father take one, as well. His

mother is projecting so hard, it's like she's broadcasting that she's a cheater.

Other than that. .. do your best to be enjoyable company, for the remainder of

your marriage. 'I didn't stop loving you.

I stopped respecting you. And I would rather be rid of your bitter hag of a

mother, than remain married to you. I didn't end this marriage. Your mother

and your refusal to stand up to her did. If you want to be angry, be angry at

HER' Don't become bitter and manic. That would play into her cards.

Stay civil with her, as much as you can, but calmly say what's on your mind -

should you even have the misfortune of speaking to her again. Don't evade

her though. You don't need to walk on your tippy toes around her anymore.

Could be fun. Also make sure to let her know she ruined her son's marriage. 'I hope you're very happy with yourself.

You single handedly poisoned your son's marriage, with your vile comments,

pestering, and lies. I feel so sorry for you, MIL. Must be hard to be such a sad,

insecure creature that you don't know how to be kind to the mother of your

on grandchildren. It could've been so good. But you chose toxicity and bitterness.

Know that I would have gladly grown old with your son, and cherished him

forever. But I'd rather be rid of you, than stay with him. That says a lot. You'd

better get absurdly healthy. Because you made sure he is all alone. He needs you now, to take care of him.

No woman is going to want to take my place, with you as a MIL' That hurts a lot

more than swear words. Find out the laws for recording ppl in your region.

Don't have any more unrecorded conversations with MIL, if you can. (Ammo

for blocking her from the kids, hopefully) You can't talk s__t about your husband to your kids.

Explaining to them that you don't really not love your husband, but you refuse

to be terrorized by his mother any longer is not parental alienation. It's truth.

And don't go too far in talking ill of MIL. She's a sad, bitter old woman, that

can't help poisoning relationships. She's probably very insecure, and confused. Perhaps she has early dementia.

You wish she would get some help, instead of dragging everyone around her

down and into her delusions. You're almost free. Now first secure your position in the divorce. You come first now.

Soregular − It is impossible to be attracted to a man who won't be one.

CharmedOne1789 − Good 👏🏻 For 👏🏻 You👏🏻 If he hasn't changed after 20

years, he isn't going to. MIL certainly isn't going to change! The best revenge is

living a happy life. Go off and leave Satan's mistress and her noodle spined son behind, and live HAPPILY.

your kids are probably old enough that they will be able to see through her bs,

and be able to tell their Dad they don't want to see her on his time. Go be happy Mama!

! May his next SO really be a cheating controlling lying hoe bag who makes MIL

life miserable 😂😂 She will realize how good she had it with you, and miss you.

This group supported OP setting boundaries

ra3ra31010 − I wouldn’t want a relationship ship with my grandma if she treated my mom this way….

peachgreenteagremlin − Children understand and learn a lot more than most

people think. They’re definitely happy seeing you defend yourself. They know

how their grandma makes you feel, and they can tell when you’re upset. This is not a healthy dynamic for your children. I applaud you for leaving now.

WarDog1983 − I’m actually glad your children saw you demand respect - kids

always know when someone is bad to this mother and their rather start being

bad to their mom or hate their moms abuser Your husband is weak and

pathetic his inaction gave you the ick Bravo for going for the Divorce

rora_borealis − I bet your kids will pick up on it as you defending yourself. Not

doing this would teach them to accept disrespect from family. Your MIL sucks so bad.

These users focused on preparing for divorce by documenting incidents, securing finances, and creating a safe exit plan

boundaries4546 − Wow, you have suffered long enough! ! Yup you are 100%

justified. You are showing your kids it is not okay to be treated poorly, and it’s

never too late to stand up for themselves. You are teaching them that you don’t have to stay with an unsupportive partner.

Material_Buy_4304 − You've been carrying this weight for 17 years. It's time to

break free. Document everything, especially the gaslighting and manipulation.

Prepare a safe exit plan for you and the kids. You deserve better.

These commenters agreed MIL’s behavior had created a harmful environment and that OP was right to stop accepting years of disrespect

icky-chu − It absolutely was the best idea to tell of MIL and Husband about MIL

behavior in front of your kids. Do you want them to spend 17 years being gaslight by someone? No.

Christinsey − It sounds like you have done the right thing. She sounds like a

nightmare. Your husband is a terrible husband for allowing her to abuse you and your children for years.

This group supported OP leaving the relationship, believing the husband prioritized his mother over his wife and family

catslikepets143 − Good. Let him be in a relationship with mommy, it sounds

like he never has been a real partner to you, his real family. Too bad he will

realize that after he blows up the best thing he ever had, his family. He can go back home & suck on mommy’s titties

madgeystardust − I’m sorry they’ve pushed you this far. It’s really ok to be done.

After nearly two decades of being criticized, accused, and blamed, OP finally reached the point where years of resentment came pouring out.

What started as trying to keep the peace turned into years of feeling unsupported by both her MIL and the husband who never defended her.

The breaking point wasn’t just one comment, it was realizing the same pattern had affected her confidence, her marriage, and her children.

Do you think OP made the right choice by walking away, or should her marriage have had one more chance if her husband finally stepped up?

How much responsibility does a partner have when their family repeatedly hurts their spouse? Share your thoughts below!
