Exhausted New Mom Asked For Help, But Her Husband Poured Water On Her Instead

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

OP is a new mother who has spent the last seven months giving nearly every ounce of herself to caring for her baby.

Between exclusive nursing, sleep deprivation, health problems, and having almost no outside support, she is already running on empty.

What pushed her to make this post was not just exhaustion, but the moment her husband poured cold water on her while she was sleeping and dismissed her need for rest.

After months of asking for emotional support and feeling unheard, OP is questioning how much more she can handle.

A new mother struggling with exhaustion and health issues feels unsupported

'Husband poured cold water on me while I slept?'

Feeling o__rwhelmed and looking for advice…. Background:

My (32 F) husband (42 M) and I have a 7-month old baby. I exclusively nurse

(we did triple feeds the first month because he was born very small and

had low blood sugars and then switched to exclusively nursing because the

bottles, pumping, etc were all too much for us, baby was spitting up /

vomiting / etc) so we are currently only nursing (with some solids

introduced during the day for texture / taste). We tried to reintroduce

bottles around month 3 or 4 and baby refused. We’ve tried straw cup

drinking around months 4 or 5 which might’ve been too early. It’s on my to

do list to try again with straw drinking. We had some challenges at first

with solids (he broke out in full blown hives with the first 3 foods he tried

which spanned over about a month to allow breaks to recover between foods).

I’ve also had various health conditions pop up since he was born (so on

going about 7 months now) that I’ve been struggling to manage. We had

ants a few months ago and I thought I had ant bites all over my feet and

legs. The “ant bites” ended up spreading and ongoing for months and I

eventually learned that they are rashes, not ant bites. My hands started to

break down in rashes too which I thought was a manifestation of my celiac

(gluten intolerance) so I thought it would go away because I haven’t been

consuming gluten and assumed I must have accidentally consumed some

that triggered a reaction. When the rashes persisted, I scheduled with a

dermatologist and she prescribed some creams including a steroid and

antibiotic which have been difficult to balance because I need my hands to

take care of baby. I ordered cotton and non-latex gloves to put over the

creams but even getting the time to go through the cream routine,

brushing my teeth, etc etc has been tough because baby is so mom-

dependent right now and cries a lot with dad despite efforts for them to

bond. At months 3 or 4, baby would take to dad for maybe 5-15 minutes

total per day (24 hours). We don’t have any other family support and I’m staying home full time currently to care for baby.

Our current routine is that baby wakes up at 6:15 am, nurses until about

6:45 am, hangs out with his dad until 7:45 am, and then dad gets ready and

goes to work at 8 am, returns at 4 pm. I usually sleep during that 45

minutes because after caring for baby all night (we also co-sleep and co-

nap, please don’t criticize) it is the only time I get to stretch out in bed and

sleep as a solo person and can sleep on my belly or however I choose. It is

my only “me” time, and I choose to sleep after late nights with baby eating

every few hours because I am completely exhausted and need the energy to take care of a baby solo for the next 8+ hours.

Fast forward to today, I was dead exhausted this morning, and instead of

letting me sleep, my husband kept insisting I wake up and poured cold water all over my face while I was asleep.

It turned into a fight. We hired someone this week (as a trial week) to help

us meal prep because I’ve been struggling to prepare healthy meals for

myself while also caring for a 7-month old. We were still arguing when she

was supposed to arrive so I suggested we ask her not to come today and

we’d still pay for the day and groceries of course. He got mad saying the

world doesn’t start and stop for my feelings which is true but we can’t have

a stranger in our own while we’re arguing and I was still shaken up by the

morning (husband smacking me and pouring cold water on my face to try

to wake me up). When I mentioned cancelling today, he said, “No, she is fired if you cancel her today! You can starve!”

He says I was “faking being asleep” and I kept asking him not to speak on

my intentions and I wasn’t fake sleeping, I was actually sleeping. Although

“sleeping” is an oversimplification. In reality, I was half asleep, half awake,

half paralyzed by what was going on around me and too exhausted to even

use my words, half utterly defeated by the complete lack of emotional support I’ve been desperately needing.

I know this post is all over the place, we are just struggling, and I don’t

know who to turn to for emotional support. I have been asking my husband

for months for emotional support and am faced with invalidation and

dismissiveness and I’m exhausted and don’t know what to do.. Any advice would be appreciated.

There is a point where exhaustion stops feeling like ordinary tiredness and starts affecting a person’s sense of safety, clarity, and ability to function.

This mother has spent seven months nursing around the clock, managing feeding complications, caring for a highly dependent baby, coping with painful skin problems, and surviving on very limited personal time.

Her 45-minute morning sleep is not a luxury. It appears to be one of the only predictable opportunities she has to recover enough to keep going.

That context matters because the conflict was not simply about whether she should wake up.

Her husband reportedly poured cold water on her face while she slept and smacked her while trying to wake her.

He then dismissed her account by claiming she was “faking being asleep” and later told her she could “starve” if the meal-prep arrangement was disrupted.

Those details move the situation beyond an ordinary argument between exhausted new parents.

A fresh perspective is that her feeling “half paralyzed” may not mean she was being passive or dramatic.

Severe fatigue and emotional overload can produce a freeze-like response in which someone struggles to speak or act despite being partly aware of what is happening.

Her repeated attempts to obtain emotional support also suggest that this morning was not an isolated disagreement but part of a broader experience of feeling unheard and invalidated.

That framework changes how this situation should be interpreted.

The mother’s exhaustion deserves care in its own right, but physical aggression should not be explained away as frustration about sleep, schedules, or household logistics.

The most realistic next step is not another debate about who was technically right that morning.

She needs outside support and a private opportunity to tell a healthcare professional exactly what happened, including the physical contact, exhaustion, and ongoing dismissiveness.

She also deserves practical relief: protected sleep, reliable food, medical care for her skin, and childcare help that does not depend entirely on a baby suddenly becoming comfortable away from her.

Feeling overwhelmed in this situation does not mean she is failing to cope with motherhood.

It may mean the current arrangement is asking far more of her than one person can safely carry, while the person who should be helping has begun adding fear and instability to an already exhausting load.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These commenters identified the husband’s actions as abuse and urged OP to leave for safety

Constant-Brick3213 − I'm so sorry for what's happening to you, your

husband is abusing you, and to say the least he's a total AH, he's pouring

water on you and hitting you and he's still claiming you're pretending to be

sleeping, so can't he really see that you're sleeping or does he really care? a

small baby requires a lot of attention and of course you're tired.

and also sick. see how you could separate yourself from your husband, if

you don't have anyone in the city where you live, maybe you could go back

home, get help, a women's shelter, if that's not possible right now, work on

an exit strategy. he's showing you who he really is, trust him and run away

snarkisms − I'm sorry, but you were woken up by him hitting you and

pouring cold water on you? This is physical abuse. PHYSICAL ABUSE. I don't

give a f\*ck how tired he is, what he is doing is domestic violence. You need

to leave. He isn't going to improve. Leave, please.

Pack a bag with your important documents, cash, baby stuff, get in the car,

and go to your nearest DV shelter

queenofsass86 − You are being abused. Take your baby, and RUN

These commenters emphasized that hitting, pouring water, and denying basic needs were unacceptable forms of domestic violence

ambergriswoldo − Essentially no other details of the situation matter - your

husband smacked you and poured cold water on you, that’s considered

a__ault. Do you want to continue being with someone who does that to

you? Do you want to raise a child who will see and hear that behaviour? Do

you want to risk your child also being assaulted?

UnPracticed_Pagan − This is straight up abuse from your husband.

Especially since he willingly said he’d let you starve. Do you have family to

go to? Somewhere safe to truly process and get help with your baby so you

can sleep? This is not a healthy relationship or marriage in this moment of

how he is treating you. You don’t even “deserve” rest.

You REQUIRE it as a human. You REQUIRE food. Your partner should be

helping you more than fifteen minutes a day with the baby. This is asinine.

Edited: took out part of family coming over because I somehow missed he SLAPPED YOU. GET OUT

Public_Cat_7406 − Your husband is an abusive a__hole. Please leave. You and your baby deserve better

These commenters encouraged OP to seek outside support, contact resources, and create a safe exit plan

Cold_Brew_Enthusiast − First thing: Everyone is correct, your husband is an

abuser. When you say you don't know who to turn to for emotional

support, do you not have any family members, relatives, friends, or even

former co-workers to reach out to? If the answer is no, I would reach out to

a women's shelter or even call a women's help line where you live.

These would be easy to find on the Internet. Now just regarding your baby:

remember that steroid creams you put on your body will enter your

bloodstream through the skin and get into your milk for your baby. Your

"ant bite" reaction sounds to me like an auto-immune reaction -- stress can

exacerbate an autoimmune condition greatly, and could even be the reason for the rash.

Although given how abusive your husband is, are you sure he's not

poisoning you with gluten or some other substance making you sick?

Please get out of this marriage and this house as fast as you can. If not for

your own sake, then the sake of your baby. If he is willing to abuse you, the child is not far behind.

BakedBrie26 − Your husband is vile.   He can't hold a crying baby long

enough for you to brush your teeth? He can't tell you are exhausted? And

then dumped water on you? Does he think he should do nothing at home because "he works.

" See his work is 8 hrs and didn't require him risking his life and depleting

his body of nutrients and sleep for months and months to do it. Men who

still think a mother at home with a baby is either not working or is working the same as them is an ass.

Men should be completely taking over everything domestic that doesn't

involve baby for a long time. When they get home, no relaxing, only

helping. So you can rest and feel human for two seconds.   He is straight trash. Show him this please.

These commenters warned that abusive behavior often escalates and may worsen over time without intervention

Lanky_Particular_149 − well I had that husband, and it doesn't get better.

You have to decide if you're willing to deal with this your whole life of leave him.

moonchic333 − People pour water on others as a form of torture. Your

husband sounds like a psychopath and your rashes and health problems are

your stress & anxiety manifesting into physical symptoms. Get out as soon as you can.

OP is carrying an enormous amount: a baby with feeding challenges, postpartum exhaustion, ongoing health issues, no outside support, and a partner who is supposed to be her teammate.

The disagreement about sleep was not just about waking up. It exposed a much bigger problem: OP feels unheard, unsupported, and dismissed.

Pouring cold water on someone who is exhausted and asleep, then threatening “you can starve” during an argument, crosses a serious line.

Do you think OP’s husband was simply overwhelmed, or did his actions reveal a deeper lack of respect and care?

How would you handle a situation where one parent feels completely burned out while the other refuses to acknowledge it? Share your thoughts below.
