She Delayed Labor by One Day to Keep Her Mother-in-Law From Claiming Her Son Forever—And Thousands Said They’d Do the Same

Pregnancy comes with enough decisions without having to factor in a mother-in-law’s future bragging rights. But for one expectant mom, a simple scheduling call from her doctor turned into an easy choice the moment she realized what date was on offer.

After months of hearing her mother-in-law obsess over one particular birthday, she decided she would gladly endure another day of discomfort if it meant avoiding a lifetime of family drama.

Now the internet is applauding her boundary.

'Moved my induction date by a day to avoid a lifetime of regret?'

The first thing my JNMIL said to me when we told her we’re pregnant with our second was “oh my. God I️ hope it’s a baby boy! You just need...

The due date: “oh my god the baby could come early and be on FIL’s birthday!” The due date was like two weeks after FIL’s birthday.

And here we are at 36 weeks, it is a boy. Oh my god MIL has been a horror. This pregnancy was nothing like my daughter and is much worse....

And SOMEHOW. SOMEHOW. This baby has found the nutrients to bulk up to soon surpass his sister who came out at 39 weeks and was 9lbs.

So with gestational diabetes in mind and him tracking so large, my OB said let’s go at 38 weeks and I️ was so excited. I️ don’t want to tear my...

HELL NAHHH TO THE NAH NAH NAHHHH. I️ asked to push it out of a day. I’ll endure another sleepless night, day of random unsolicited name suggestions every other hour,...

A Pregnancy Filled With Unwanted Commentary

The mom-to-be explained that her mother-in-law had been unusually invested in the pregnancy from the very beginning—and not in a helpful way.

The very first thing her mother-in-law said after hearing about the pregnancy wasn’t congratulations.

Instead, it was:

“Oh my God, I hope it’s a baby boy! You just need a baby boy.”

That comment immediately rubbed her the wrong way, especially since they already had a daughter.

Things didn’t improve from there.

When they later shared the baby’s due date, her mother-in-law instantly focused on another possibility.

She excitedly pointed out that if the baby arrived early, he could be born on her husband’s birthday—even though the due date was still roughly two weeks later.

To everyone else, it was simply an unlikely coincidence.

To her mother-in-law, it quickly became an obsession.

An Unexpected Medical Twist

As the pregnancy progressed, things became physically much harder than her first experience.

She developed gestational diabetes, forcing her into a highly restrictive diet that she jokingly described as spending eight weeks “licking lettuce.”

Despite carefully managing her meals, the baby continued growing rapidly.

Her first child had already weighed nine pounds at birth after arriving at 39 weeks.

This baby appeared on track to be even bigger.

Because of the gestational diabetes and the baby’s size, her obstetrician recommended inducing labor at 38 weeks rather than waiting longer.

For the exhausted mother, it sounded like wonderful news.

She admitted she especially hoped to avoid repeating the painful cervical tearing she experienced during her previous delivery.

Everything seemed perfectly planned.

Until the hospital called.

The Date She Refused Immediately

When staff asked whether she’d like to schedule the induction on her father-in-law’s birthday, her answer came without hesitation.

Absolutely not.

She joked that her response was something closer to:

“Oh hell no. Hell nah to the nah nah nahhh.”

Instead of accepting the offered date, she requested the induction be moved back by one day.

It meant enduring another sleepless night.

Another full day of restrictive eating.

Another day of constant unsolicited baby-name suggestions from her mother-in-law.

But compared with hearing “He’s Grandpa’s birthday present!” for the rest of her son’s life?

It wasn’t even a difficult decision.

Why One Day Felt Worth It

Her concern wasn’t the birthday itself.

It was everything she knew would follow.

She believed her mother-in-law would never let the shared birthday go.

Every birthday.

Every family gathering.

Every conversation.

The milestone would become another excuse to center herself—and her husband—in moments that should belong to the child.

Changing the induction date by 24 hours felt like buying decades of peace.

Here's the feedback from the Reddit community:

Many admitted they would have made the exact same choice.

CorduroyFlamingo − My first baby was due about 1.5 weeks after JNFILs birthday, he and JNMIL really wanted baby to be born on his birthday. I thought oh hell no!...

" Of course it was boy but they shot themselves in the foot pretty quickly afterward so it didn't really matter in the long run.

CinematicHeart − My son was due mid June. My mother INSISTED he would be born on her birthday at the end of may. I went into labor the day before...

Her "birthday buddy" will be 10 this year and is still "the best present" she has ever gotten. 🙄

lafillemurphy − I was going to have a scheduled c section and it looked like it was either going to be on my daughter’s birthday or my MILs bday (they...

I ended up having pre-eclampsia and delivering two weeks before her birthday 😇 I wouldn’t have minded if she was born on my older daughter’s birthday as they would have...

Majandra − I had to stay at the hospital for a couple weeks to get my GD under control with insulin.

The best part of the day was getting sugar free crystal light in my water. The kitchen manager was so so nice in helping me choose healthy meals.

I ate tuna sandwiches a lot on whole wheat with light mayo and lettuce, tomato, cucumber, whatever veggies they had went on it.

She also let me have those tiny ice cream containers for kids that have a wooden spoon type thing once every couple days. There are some choices you can make...

The rest of the day will just be boring snacks. I’m so glad you were able to change the day. You will still hear about it until you’re so annoyed.

Several users described narrowly avoiding similar situations with scheduled C-sections or early deliveries.

Bloody_Elle − My twins needed to come out by 38 weeks, which just happened to be on my MILs birthday. I'd never have heard the end of it if they...

Peachy-Owl − My daughter came almost two months early on my birthday. I was terrified she wasn’t going to survive and didn’t even realize until the next day that she...

Since we were born in May, we celebrated my birthday on Mother’s Day. She had the actual day to herself until she went off to college.

Then, she asked if we could celebrate birthdays together. We have a ball planning trips and things to do together on our shared birthday.

seweyhole − Some adults are really weird about birthdays. My mom wants us to organize a huge birthday party for her every year, and we often do, but like, you’re...

giggletears3000 − Good job moving the date! Now have the baby and don’t tell her for a week!

Perfect_Caregiver_90 − "Licking lettuce" is funny in a 'you poor thing' way. Good call on avoiding that date because it would not be pretty.

All the positive mojo for a safe delivery, healthy baby, healthy you, and as little drama as possible from all the non-involved people in your orbit.

_Internet_Hugs_ − $100 says she still calls the baby Grandpa's birthday present and insists you name the baby after him.

Some Families Turn Shared Birthdays Into Something Wonderful

Not every shared birthday story carried negative memories.

One woman explained that her daughter was born nearly two months early—on her own birthday.

Because the delivery was so traumatic, she barely even noticed the date until afterward.

For years, they celebrated separately, especially since their birthday often coincided with Mother’s Day.

Later, once her daughter became an adult, they intentionally began celebrating together with trips and shared experiences.

She described it as one of her favorite traditions.

The difference, many readers pointed out, was consent.

The birthday belonged equally to both of them.

There wasn’t a relative trying to claim ownership over the child.

Others Thought the Drama Was Far From Over

Many commenters suspected changing the induction date wouldn’t stop the mother-in-law from trying to make the baby about the grandfather anyway.

One joked they’d happily bet $100 she’d still introduce him as “Grandpa’s birthday present” and immediately begin campaigning for the baby to be named after him.

Another offered perhaps the funniest suggestion of all:

Have the baby… and don’t tell your mother-in-law for a week.

Whether joking or serious, the overwhelming consensus was clear.

Sometimes one extra day of pregnancy is a small price to pay for avoiding a lifetime of unnecessary family drama.

After all, boundaries can start before the baby even arrives.
