Man Agrees To Open His Four-Year Relationship, Then His Girlfriend Leaves Him For Her First Date

Opening a relationship requires trust, communication, and boundaries that everyone genuinely understands. What nobody expects is to end up financing the hotel room where their longtime partner begins falling for somebody else.

One 20-year-old Redditor had been with his girlfriend for more than four years. They were high-school sweethearts with plans for life after college, but eventually agreed to experiment with an open relationship.

When his girlfriend met another man during a night out, she checked that their arrangement still stood—and then asked her boyfriend to pay for the hotel because she was not working.

He agreed. A week later, she wanted to meet the same man again and requested another hotel. This time, the following morning brought messages about needing a “break.” Scroll down to see how quickly an experiment meant to spice up their relationship became its ending.

A young man realizes agreeing to an open relationship led to him funding his girlfriend’s new romance

'TIFU By agreeing to an “open relationship”?'

To put things into perspective, I (M 20) and my GF (F 21) had been dating/together for four and a bit years.

Typical high school sweethearts, we wanted to move away and start our own lives after college.

We decide to spice things up a bit and “open” up our relationship a little.

It was pretty much a join decision but looking back she was kind of insistent on the whole “s__ is fun” idea.

She is on a night out with some friends when she phones me and asks if the whole open relationship thing is still cool,

explaining she’s met a guy (M 24) and asks for me to pay for a hotel because she wasn’t working at the time. I agreed. I tell her to go...

She texts me to say she had a good night and that all was well.

The week after, she mentions she’s meeting up with this guy again. Wasn’t expecting it but I’m cool with it. Again, asks for me to pay for her hotel.

A decision I would live to regret. She doesn’t text me the entire night. Weird, but okay maybe she’s just having a good time?

The next day I receive a load of messages about how she needs a “break” from “everything” right now. Meeting this guy has apparently opened her eyes.

A little more conversation and we’re over. She’s completely cut me out of her life. I check her snap chat story, and of course, she’s with him.

I’ve heard from her friends that they’re dating now.

TLDR; Agreed to an open relationship, basically paid for my girlfriend to find someone better and dump me.

Few relationship experiences hurt quite like agreeing to something in good faith and discovering that the other person may have been moving toward a completely different destination. The OP did not merely watch a four-year relationship end.

He actively tried to support an arrangement they had supposedly chosen together, even paying for the hotel rooms where his girlfriend met another man. Learning shortly afterward that she wanted a “break,” only to discover she was apparently dating that same person, understandably transformed openness into a painful sense of replacement.

Emotionally, this story is less about sex than expectations. The OP seems to have understood opening the relationship as adding experiences while preserving their existing partnership. His girlfriend’s actions eventually produced something very different: an emotional transition into another relationship.

Those are not interchangeable arrangements. Agreeing that a partner may sleep with somebody else does not automatically mean agreeing that the original relationship can be quietly auditioned against potential replacements.

There is another perspective worth considering, however. It is tempting for the OP to conclude that he “paid his girlfriend to find someone better.” That interpretation places him in a competition he supposedly lost. A more psychologically useful reading is that changing the relationship structure revealed information that already mattered.

Perhaps his girlfriend developed unexpected feelings. Perhaps she had already become uncertain about their future. Neither possibility means the new man was objectively “better,” nor does it mean the OP caused the breakup by agreeing.

Psychologist Elisabeth Sheff, who has studied consensual non-monogamy for decades, explains in Psychology Today that successful polyamorous and open relationships typically require unusually explicit negotiation around boundaries, expectations, jealousy, emotional attachment, and what happens when circumstances change.

She emphasizes that consensual non-monogamy is fundamentally different from infidelity because everyone involved needs informed agreement about the relationship structure.

Research reviewed by psychologist Justin Lehmiller similarly suggests that consensually non-monogamous relationships are not inherently less satisfying than monogamous ones. Their success depends heavily on motives, communication, consent, and whether the arrangement genuinely fits the people involved.

That distinction matters here. The OP’s mistake was probably not agreeing to an open relationship in itself. The larger problem was entering one without sufficiently clear expectations about repeated partners, emotional involvement, communication afterward, and what “open” actually meant to each person.

At 20, losing a high-school sweetheart after four years can easily feel like losing the future alongside the relationship. But he did not become less valuable because she chose somebody else. The useful lesson is narrower: unconventional relationships need *more* clarity, not fewer boundaries.

And next time, regardless of the relationship structure, paying for a partner’s hotel dates is certainly not a requirement for being supportive.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These users were baffled that OP paid for the hotel and saw that decision as one of the strangest parts of the situation

ryan30z − Why did you pay for the hotel once let alone twice?

Dalze − and asks for me to pay for a hotel because she wasn’t working at the time Bruh. ..

[Reddit User] − Bruhhhh you paid for a hotel so some other dude could f__k your girlfriend. I'm sorry that happened to you man but you made your own bed.

This commenter jokingly described the entire arrangement as an exceptionally terrible “trade deal.”

Alxz21 − "The worst trade deal in the history of trade deals"

These commenters predicted that the ex would eventually return once the new relationship lost its excitement or fell apart

Cantfinduser − Odds are you haven’t heard the last from her.

You should prepare yourself for the inevitability that she will one day feel sad, or lonely, or bored,

or she’ll get dumped, and come to think of you, and how well you treated her. Don’t forget how she treated you.

Esoteric_Erric − Best few hundred dollars you've ever spent, someone above is looking out for you. This girl has shown her true character,

which is to say she is insensitive, selfish and uncaring. It hurts you right now (because high school sweethearts etc)

but for both emotional and financial reasons you are better discovering her true nature now than after another 5 or 10 years together.

Decide if you want to expose yourself to the vulnerability of an 'open relationship' in the future.

It sounds cool and trendy on the surface but is obviously a minefield.

Hope you can find someone who is like yourself, (and for some reason I hope you decide against someone

who may just flippantly drop you at the drop of a hat because you experimented with this again). BTW.

Why didn't her new fling pay for the hotel? Probably because he's a loser or a user. They deserve each other - don't go back there.

There's a real chance the lustre will be off their 'relationship' in a very short time - don't go back. EDIT: To the kind stranger who gilded this, thank you.

iMnotHiigh − Lol this bitxh is gonna be texting you back a month later asking you to accept her back in your life

These users questioned whether the arrangement was ever a genuine open relationship, suggesting the girlfriend may have used it to justify behavior she already wanted

theFudgi − Sounds like she doesn't understand exactly what an open relationship is and basically used the term for an excuse to cheat.

theWet_Bandits − This is a good thing. Better now than when you both were married.

She possibly was already banging this guy before your agreement. .. or someone else. Don’t enter an agreement like this again unless you are 100% in.

jon62491 − At least you didn't have a kid with her...
