Stepmom Creates Unusual Parenting Rules, Then Accidentally Becomes A Comedy Attraction

Custody agreements are supposed to create structure for a child, not read like an experimental parenting manifesto. I think most people would struggle to keep a straight face after being asked to regulate clothing colors, haircut decisions, and even the emotional continuity of movies between two homes.

One 38-year-old Redditor says that is exactly what landed in her inbox after her ex-husband and his wife, Megan, proposed a new custody arrangement for their 11-year-old son. Her attorney reportedly found the demands just as ridiculous, so the OP decided to respond with a joke of her own.

She submitted Megan’s contact information to a local comedy club, suggesting the custody material might make great stand-up. Then the joke grew legs. Scroll down to see why Megan started getting calls from comedy venues and why the OP is now wondering whether the prank crossed a line.

A mother receives bizarre new custody demands from her ex and his wife, then finds an unusual way to respond

'AITA for signing my ex-husband's wife up for a comedy club after reading her custody demands?'

I (38F) share custody of my 11-year-old son with my ex-husband (40M). He remarried three years ago to "Megan" (35F).

For the most part, things have been manageable. Megan has always inserted herself into custody discussions, which is annoying but usually harmless.

Recently, however, my ex and Megan sent over a proposed revision to our custody agreement. I opened the document expecting something normal.

Instead, it read like the script for a sitcom.

Some highlights: My son should not wear blue on their custody days because blue is "emotionally overstimulating."

I should provide a detailed ingredient list for any food he eats within 72 hours before exchanges.

I should not schedule haircuts without consulting Megan because she has "developed a vision for his personal brand.".

My son should refer to Megan as his "bonus primary parent" because "stepmom feels too limiting."

They wanted approval rights over what movies he watches at my house because they were concerned about "narrative inconsistency between households."

There were several more. I genuinely laughed out loud while reading it.

I showed the document to my attorney, who also laughed before telling me not to worry because none of it was likely to go anywhere.

Here's where I may be the AH.

A week later I saw an ad online for a local comedy club that had an amateur stand-up night.

They encouraged people to nominate friends with funny life stories.

So I submitted Megan's first name, email address, and a short note saying something like:

"This woman has the most creative custody demands I've ever seen. If she can explain them on stage, she'll bring the house down."

I completely forgot about it afterward. Apparently the comedy club thought it was hilarious.

Not only did they contact her, but they shared her information with several affiliated venues and talent scouts looking for unusual acts.

Over the next month Megan started getting emails, calls, and messages inviting her to audition,

workshop material, or discuss "her unique parenting comedy perspective."

At first she thought it was spam. Then one recruiter referenced "the custody agreement material."

That was when she figured out someone had submitted her.. She eventually confronted me.. I admitted it.. She absolutely exploded.

My ex called me screaming that I had humiliated both of them and turned a private family matter into a joke.

I pointed out that I hadn't published the custody proposal anywhere.

I simply suggested she might have a future in comedy because her demands were funnier than anything I'd heard from actual comedians.

This somehow made things worse.

Now they're furious, and apparently Megan is still getting contacted by comedy-related organizations despite unsubscribing from several lists.

My sister thinks this is one of the funniest things she's ever heard and says they brought it on themselves.

My attorney laughed so hard she had to mute herself during a phone call.

A few friends think I crossed a line because I used Megan's contact information without permission. So, AITA??

Sometimes a request is so unreasonable that laughing feels like the healthiest response. The OP opened a proposed custody revision and found demands about clothing colors, ingredient lists, haircuts, movies, and even what her son should call his stepmother.

It is easy to understand why she and her attorney found the document absurd. The deeper frustration, though, was probably not the comedy of the rules themselves. It was the implication that Megan should have authority over ordinary parenting decisions inside the OP’s own household.

That kind of overreach can create resentment quickly. The OP shares custody with her ex-husband, not with Megan independently, yet Megan appears to have positioned herself as a kind of additional primary decision-maker.

Family-law attorney Lisa Zeiderman warns that co-parenting can slide into micromanagement when one household tries to control routine decisions in the other. She recommends asking whether an intervention genuinely protects the child or mainly relieves an adult’s discomfort with losing control.

That perspective makes many of Megan’s proposed rules look less like necessary consistency and more like an attempt to erase the normal independence of two households. Children can generally adapt to different routines in each home, and experts emphasize that clear boundaries may be healthier than demanding identical environments everywhere.

But the OP’s retaliation deserves separate scrutiny. Signing Megan up for a comedy club may have felt proportionate because no custody document was publicly posted. Still, she used Megan’s private contact information without permission and triggered repeated attention from strangers.

Psychologist Rachel Orleck explains that healthy boundaries involve recognizing what another person is comfortable giving or receiving; respect for boundaries applies even when the other person has behaved badly first.

That is the fresh irony here: Megan allegedly crossed boundaries by trying to control the OP’s household, while the OP responded by crossing a privacy boundary of her own.

The better victory was already available. Her attorney believed the excessive demands were unlikely to succeed. Keeping the document, responding through counsel, and refusing unreasonable provisions would have protected her parenting autonomy without creating another conflict.

The comedy submission was undeniably funny as revenge. It was also unnecessary. When someone hands you ridiculous demands in a custody dispute, sometimes the strongest response is letting the document embarrass itself.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These users praised OP’s satire and treated the “YTA” verdict as affectionate applause

Asleep_Pace_5039 − With love and pure admiration, YTA but in the best, most appropriate and acceptable way. Thank you for your service!

OddGuarantee4061 − YTA. Keep being an AH because that was awesome!

PurfuitOfHappineff − YTA to yourself for not getting a Netflix special where you just read her demands while cackling. NGL I’ve seen worse.

FarmerJohn92 − YTA, not because of anything you said, but because you are a woman.

These commenters exaggerated tiny parenting choices into absurd reasons to condemn OP

hamster-on-popsicle − YTA You let your child wear blue ? Outrageous !

Illustrious_Map6694 − YTA big time.   First off, all the blue wearing/seeing is likely the reason your child misbehaves at achool.

And not caring about his personal brand? I mean, come on. Are you trying to be locked alone in the worst nursing home imaginable?

I'm so glad there is someone in your son's life who actually cares about him. And for you to turn on her?

Just gross. Seek help for your narcissist ways before it's too far gone.

These commenters loved how believable the satire was despite being intentionally ridiculous

xujaya − NTA for the best post here in a long while.

I would suggest you sign up for the comedy gig, but seeing as your brand of satire confuses so many lost redditors I'm not sure how well you'll go over...

Dr_Drinks − NTA. You kindly turned her request from a potential family conflict into something that brought joy and laughter to many people. You’re my hero!

These Redditors thought the material was funny enough for a comedy show or special

Bubbly_Daikon_4620 − I love this sub. This was brilliant by being ridiculous, but kind of believable. Maybe you should sign yourself up for comedy clubs.

Vivid_Fan9346 − She has your ex. So it seems like she knows how to take a joke. You definitely the angle.

Do you think the comedy club submission was a harmless way to handle a ridiculous situation, or did it cross a privacy line? Would you have laughed or been upset if you were Megan? Share your thoughts below!
