Husband Claims His Mystery Pills Prevent Pregnancy, but One Embarrassing Mix-Up Explains Everything

in Social Issues

Unexpected pregnancies can bring up a complicated mix of fear, confusion, hope, and frustration, especially when a couple believed they were already taking steps to prevent one.

Things become even harder when one partner suddenly reveals information that does not seem medically possible.

One Redditor found herself in exactly that position after learning she was pregnant with what would be her fourth child.

She had been using birth control, but her husband insisted he had also been taking a contraceptive pill made for men.

The problem was that he could not remember its name, produce the packaging, or explain where it came from.

As questions piled up, she began wondering whether he was lying, confused, or seriously misunderstanding something.

His explanation eventually led to a much bigger conversation about their relationship, future plans, and the pregnancy itself. Scroll down to see what she discovered.

not the actual photo

'My husband might be lying about something huge?'

My husband (M23) and I (F25) have one child together (the youngest), I

have two with my ex fiancé. Total, that’s three kids. The youngest just

turned one a week ago. All three of my labors have been botched some

way or another and we wanted to try to save up to move out of state.

Well..I found out I’m pregnant. I was shocked, but not nearly as shocked as

my husband. Why, you ask? Because my husband swears he was on birth control.

Yep. You read that right. Despite there being nothing FDA approved for

men to take in pill form, he swears he was given birth control pills and that

he’s been taking them for over a month. He cannot show me the

paperwork with information on the pill he was given. He cannot show me

the container the pills were in. He can’t even remember the name of them.

But somehow, some way, he is adamant he was on birth control pills.

Added: I was on the nuva ring, so yes measures were taken on my end to prevent this.

I love kids and I am thinking about keeping this pregnancy, but this really wasn’t something I wanted to do again.

I don’t know what to do. I want to tell my husband I’m going to call his Dr

and ask because if his Dr was giving him something not FDA approved, we

can sue and he needs to switch offices. But I don’t believe my husband.

Maybe if I tell him I’m gonna call his drs office he’ll be honest with me?

Edit to add: I’m not worried about finances. I’m a CNA and he works in

HVAC. We can more than afford one more kid, it just wasn’t in the books.

And I’ll reiterate, I was on birth control when this happened. He did not tell

me about “his pill” until AFTER I told him I was pregnant. I’ve been trying to

get sterilized since 2022 but my OB refuses to until I turn 26 or have a boy.

Since I’m on an HMO insurance my resources are limited so I can’t keep

switching offices to get a surgery that’s deemed elective. I am not sure I

want to keep this pregnancy, but my husband is Catholic so termination

would be an unforgivable sin and he is pushing for me to keep it.

Update: he was using an anti depressant that causes lower LIBIDO as birth

control. He thought libido meant motility. I explained the difference and

he’s coming home from work early so we can talk about what to do. If I

update again it will be in a separate post. Thank you to the few people that

were genuinely kind and concerned, and thank you to all the helpful people

tossing out suggestions about the situation. He will also be meeting with a

psychiatrist tomorrow to be evaluated for schizophrenia since a few others

brought up symptoms I mentioned throughout the comments being possibly linked to schizophrenia.

Update 2: I’m making this post as an update and to clear some things up.

I have a second job I’ve maintained since I graduated CNA school. It’s not

mentioned in my post history because I have no issues with that job. I also

got hired at a facility three days before I was terminated from the facility I posted about. So yes, I am still working.

I had no plans to sue my husbands doctor. If we put on our reading glasses,

I said I was going to tell my husband that I would sue his dr if the office

really gave him illegal drugs. Now with context clues that should tell you

guys that I was using that as a tactic to see if he would admit to lying.

as a CNA I am aware that unless I’m permitted by my husband to access his

health information, calling the Dr won’t do anything. Now, if I’m saying I can

call and get that information, what does that tell you guys? MAYBE, the

CNA knows what she’s talking about and has that permission?

Apparently the nuva ring is one of the most useless birth control methods

to exist. Several women in the comments stated getting pregnant on it,

and one man mentioned his wife’s OB saying it’s just a waste of silicone. So..there’s that.

Yes, I had two kids with an ex. We were together for six years. I was told at

17 I was infertile so kid #1 came along. Kid #2 came around on the implant.

It was an abusive relationship and I was told if I did anything to “hurt his

babies” that I would get my ass beat and tossed on the street. This man

beat me, cheated constantly, kept my money from me and had 24/7 access

to my phone. I had no family support so I was stuck. Kid #3 (my husbands)

was the pill. I’ve been fighting to get sterilized since 2022 after kid #2 but

my OB keeps refusing because I haven’t had a boy yet. (George Ahad is his

name btw, so any women currently seeing him can switch offices)

Onto the update. My husband is an idiot. Plain and simple. He was taking

the medication Fluoxetine and since it can cause low libido, he thought he was gonna be shooting blanks.

Apparently his mother never signed the permission form for him to get Sex

Ed so he didn’t know much about female anatomy or really anything

besides hygiene and penis goes into vagina. Which explains getting the

meaning of Libido mixed up with motility. We had a long talk. He’s calling

out on Wednesday to get the vasectomy done. (Thankfully we live in a

retirement population so you can practically walk in) Today he’s off so we

can talk about what to do, both about this child and our relationship. Right

now, we are leaning towards termination. I told him I didn’t like being put in

a situation where I’m having to choose between money and comfort over a

child’s life because he didn’t understand what two words meant, and that if

he had gotten the vasectomy the first two times it was scheduled this

could’ve been avoided. We’re going to therapy the first week of September to see if this is something we can work through.

Few things expose the fragile parts of a relationship faster than an unexpected pregnancy.

Fear can make people defensive, confused, or desperate to find an explanation, especially when another child was never part of the immediate plan.

In this story, the OP was already processing a pregnancy she actively tried to prevent when her husband introduced an astonishing claim: he believed his antidepressant was functioning as male birth control.

What initially looked like dishonesty eventually turned out to be something arguably more complicated, serious misinformation combined with poor sexual-health education.

The emotional conflict is not simply about who caused the pregnancy.

The OP had been using the vaginal ring and had repeatedly pursued permanent contraception, while her husband had previously postponed vasectomy appointments.

His misunderstanding therefore landed on top of an existing imbalance.

She was facing another pregnancy, another medical decision, and another disruption to her body because he confused “low libido” with reduced sperm motility.

That distinction explains why her reaction carried more than irritation. She was confronting the consequences of a mistake she did not personally make.

There is a useful alternative to the Reddit assumption that he must have been deliberately lying.

His explanation sounds unbelievable because many adults assume basic reproductive knowledge is universal.

It is not. If he genuinely received little or no sex education, unfamiliar medical language may have filled that gap poorly.

That does not remove responsibility, but ignorance and deception require different responses.

One damages trust through concealment; the other reveals a dangerous lack of knowledge that should have been corrected long before parenthood.

The medical facts support that distinction.

Lower libido means reduced desire for sexual activity; it does not mean the medication prevents pregnancy.

Standard contraceptive guidance lists methods such as condoms and vasectomy for people producing sperm, while fluoxetine is not recognized as contraception.

In other words, his misunderstanding had a plausible linguistic origin, but no medical basis.

That also corrects another misconception in the discussion: the OP’s vaginal ring was not “useless.”

Seen this way, the larger problem is not deciding which partner deserves blame.

They now need reliable medical information, a contraception plan both partners actually understand, and space for the OP to make a pregnancy decision without coercion.

Therapy may help repair trust, but basic reproductive education matters just as much.

A relationship can survive an embarrassing misunderstanding more easily than it can survive repeatedly placing the consequences of that misunderstanding on one person’s body.

See what others had to share with OP:

These Redditors believed the husband was lying because male birth-control pills are not available

FormSuccessful1122 − Not sure where you are but it’s unlikely the doctor

can tell you anything anyway. But yeah. He’s lying.

anemia_ − He knows his full of s__t but you can't call people's doctors and ask anything lol.

ZephNightingale − He’s not only lying, but too stupid to come up with a lie

that isn’t absurd. He must have seen the headline about the first trials for

the male birth control pill going well, but it’s definitely not available yet.

SaltySallymander − He's trying to corner you into fessing up to cheating

because he does not want this child. Do you really want to be with a man that is comfortable lying to you?

This group suspected his story was meant to imply cheating or avoid responsibility

Dry-Leopard-6995 − He is accusing you of cheating on him. When someone

does this, I immediately think they are cheating, because why would they bring it up?

Excellent-Brief5041 − My first thought is your husband sounds like he's

afraid so he's making up bs to in a round about way deny being the father.

Like he's trying to start conflict so he doesn't have to deal with the

responsibility of being the father. Maybe counseling would be a good idea.

These commenters thought he may have misunderstood a medication side effect as contraception

Ok-Design-949 − Maybe he was taking some kind of meds and they told him

"you can't get anyone pregnant on these" as in - it could potentially cause

problems? And he took it to mean the meds prevent pregnancy?

baljake − Oof. If you can afford it I guess that's all fine and dandy, but you

guys are very young to have that many kids. Yeah he's either mistaking a

possible side effect for a fact, he bought some bs on the Internet, he is

referring to your nuvaring as him being on bc, or he's straight up lying.

Even on bc there's always a chance of pregnancy. Bc + pulling out reduces

that chance significantly. I assume since you're married condoms are out of

the picture(they are for me since I'm in a committed currently

monogamous relationship). I'd approach him very seriously about it with

the introduction of "yo no judgement, but I need to know why you think you're on birth control.

If you misspoke or were mistaken it's ok, but I need to know. "

These Redditors urged her to focus on the relationship, pregnancy, and future rather than proving the lie

dev-246 − You’re focused on the wrong thing. You don’t need to prove that

he lied, you know what he’s saying is impossible (male birth control pills

don’t exist). You need to focus on your plan moving forward. Do you want

to stay with a guy who will purposely get you pregnant when you don’t want to? Do you know a divorce lawyer?

Can you support yourself if you leave? Do you have family/friends for

support or is a women’s shelter a better option? Don’t waste any time

trying to prove his lie false, you have too much to do.

rootsandchalice − Listen - You're 25 and he's 23. You guys are already

raising three kids, as i am assuming your ex fiancee doesn't have the first

two as much as you do. Most people are barely out of college at his age and

you have already been engaged, engaged again and married. You must be

very tired. This is a lot really young. Don't have another kid.

You're marriage isn't solid and three kids is already a lot of kids. If he jumps ship, you will have four kids as a single mother.

What started as a bizarre claim about male birth control turned into a much deeper problem involving misinformation, missed medical follow-through, and a pregnancy neither partner had planned.

The husband’s misunderstanding may explain how it happened, but it doesn’t erase the consequences the poster now has to carry physically and emotionally.

At least they’re finally discussing vasectomy, therapy, and their options together.

Do you think this was an understandable mistake, or too serious to brush off as ignorance? Could their relationship recover from something this avoidable?
