Man Works Full Time While His Wife Surfs and Does Yoga, Then Feels Guilty for Resenting It

It is possible to love your family, respect your partner, and still feel jealous of the freedom they seem to have.

Burnout does not always come from resentment. Sometimes it comes from realizing that your own life has become almost entirely responsibility.

One husband described that exact tension after noticing how differently he and his wife spend their weeks.

She works two days in the medical field and uses much of her remaining time for hobbies, friends, exercise, and personal projects, while he works full time and spends weekends handling family obligations, sports, chores, and parenting.

He made it clear that he admires his wife and believes she deserves her downtime, especially after years of demanding ICU work.

Still, he cannot shake the feeling that he wants some of that freedom too. Scroll down to see how Reddit reacted to his frustration.

'My wife leads a much cooler life than me?'

My wife works two days a week, one weekend day and one weekday, while

I work full time making the large majority of our income. Her job is very

important (medical field), and she is a great mom, does a ton of housework,

and is all around a wonderful person. I’m fully taking all of that into account when I vent here.

Now that the kids are back in school, she has a TON of free time to do

whatever she wants. She goes to yoga, surfs, swims, goes to long lunches

with friends, reads, hikes, finds little fun projects to work on, etc. She is at a

Major League Baseball game with some mom friends today, for example.

She leads a super cool life! The problem is that I’d love to have that same

life, too! We have lot of the same interests, she just gets to enjoy them

while I work all the time, making all the money that allows her and the kids to lead amazing lives.

When it’s the weekend, my “free time” is largely attending obligatory

activities like kids’ sporting events and extended family activities, or doing

house maintenance stuff, often while solo parenting. I don’t dislike these

things by any means, but it’s not exactly free time. I get out and about here

and there, but probably at about a 1/5 scale when compared to her.

No realistic way to fix this, and I am very proud of the work I do and the

money I make to support my family and allow my wife to have her cool life. So, I’ll just vent about it here and move on.

Edit 1: thanks for the r/advice on r/vent everyone! My wife is an ICU nurse.

Her job is gnarly and amazing and she deserves her time off. She pulled

more weight during Covid than anybody I’ve ever met, working much more

than her current 2 days per week. The keyboard warriors ripping on her will

one day be alive because of someone like her, not because of someone like

me. On her behalf, “you’re welcome.”

Edit 2: the whole “why don’t you work less and she works more” crowd is

appreciated, don’t get me wrong. That’s just not my career path. I’ve got a

fancy title in a niche technical field and can’t really go backwards.

Edit 3: I love my kids and coach their teams and drag them all over the

place to do awesome stuff. I’m just burned out from it all and it can also feel like work, more than it should.

Sometimes resentment does not come from believing another person has done something wrong.

It comes from looking at someone you love and realizing they have access to a kind of freedom you desperately miss.

That seems to be where this husband is emotionally.

He clearly respects his wife, admires her work as an ICU nurse, recognizes everything she contributes at home, and does not portray her as lazy.

His frustration is simpler and more vulnerable: she has time for hobbies, friendships, exercise, and spontaneity, while most of his waking hours are already assigned to work, parenting, maintenance, or family obligations.

That difference matters because “free time” is not always measured accurately by counting hours away from paid employment.

His wife may work fewer days professionally, but ICU nursing can be physically and psychologically demanding.

At the same time, his weekends do not appear restorative either.

Coaching sports, driving children around, fixing things, and solo parenting may be meaningful, but meaningful responsibilities can still exhaust someone.

The problem is not necessarily that one spouse has too much leisure. It may be that the other has almost no genuinely discretionary time.

A fresher way to view his envy is as information rather than accusation.

He is not really saying, “She should enjoy life less.” He is saying, “I need some of what she has.”

Envy can sometimes reveal an unmet need more clearly than frustration does.

The baseball game, surfing, or long lunch becomes symbolic of something larger: autonomy.

He may technically have weekends, but if every block is already committed to obligations, his nervous system may experience very little actual recovery. Pride in a demanding career does not cancel that need.

The practical solution is probably not asking his wife to surrender her freedom or radically changing careers.

A smaller, more realistic goal would be protecting recurring blocks of personal time for him with the same seriousness given to practices, chores, and work meetings.

Even a consistent afternoon for surfing, hiking, reading, or doing absolutely nothing could matter.

His frustration does not make him ungrateful.

It may simply be evidence that the family system currently leaves one adult with too little room to feel like a person outside his responsibilities.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These Redditors said the frustration is valid but warned resentment could damage the relationship

BedfordDuck − In the grand scheme of things, to most this probably seems

like a “non-issue” type deal. But it definitely sounds like this could lead to

some resentment, which you don’t want to let fester to that point (not that

it is, but if it’s bothering you enough to feel the need to vent, then it’s a need that has to be met somehow).

Have you considered just having a conversation with her about setting

some time aside for you to enjoy your own hobbies and interests a little

more regularly, so that your off time isn’t primarily spent doing mostly

obligatory social/family events? Or even just discussing how you feel about this overall?

(Not to say that you both may have already discussed it, but wanted to

suggest just in case). Sometimes just talking about it and doing some

brainstorming together can work wonders! Even just saying it exactly as

you have said it to us here, I think she could appreciate where you’re coming from :)

AngelicDivineHealer − On your way to either burning out or running into a

mid life crisis which isn't good for you or your family . You have to be happy

with your situation or else it's going to explode and you become the ticking time bomb.

AnswerSure271 − I imagine your wife could just not do those things. Stay

home. Cook more clean more and be really boring. I don’t think you would

like her as much because she would not be enjoying her life. She’d perhaps

not happy with her body and a touch depressed with lack of social contact.

I get the vent and it’s good to get it out of your head.

This group emphasized how much easier the wife makes family life by handling the home and kids

Viewsonic378 − I wish I had this problem. Most parents work full-time and

still come home to cook, clean, and manage the kids. I’d love if my wife

could focus entirely on the household and the kids while I handled work, even if it meant longer hours for me.

You get to come home to a house already taken care of, with appointments

and errands managed during the week things that would otherwise eat

into your workday. That’s a great setup. Your challenge is simply wanting

more personal time, which is understandable.

But compared to the alternative working full-time and still having to juggle

all the household responsibilities you’re in a far better position then the

vast majority of parents. Personally I wouldn't compare myself to the free

time you're wife has but instead to what other parents lives look like who

both work full time. Edit: Some people seem really bothered by my comment.

My only intention was to give OP a different perspective, not to try and

solve his problem. No one can give true advice without full context, and I

have no interest in digging into a random redditor’s personal situation.

From what he’s shared, he already knows his options, has a healthy

relationship with his wife, and these are issues they can work through together.

In my view, not everything in a relationship needs to be split 50/50, but

everyone is entitled to their own opinions and free to live how they choose.

From my own experience, sometimes frustration comes from problems

that have clear solutions, and other times it’s about changing perspective. But hey that’s just my opinion.

glyptodontown − You don't have a wife problem, you have a kids problem.

The wife is significantly making your life with kids easier.

lasion2 − I mean if my wife was doing the cooking, cleaning, laundry etc

AND made some money I’d be pretty pumped. My wife works her b__t off

and makes more than me. She also “manages” the kids. She does the

school/camp paper work and keeps the schedule.

I work my b__t off and then do all the shopping, cleaning, cooking, laundry,

and leg work for the kids. Trade offs my man. Take care of your health,

work hard and save money. Maybe. Perhaps. When we get much older. We will enjoy the fruits of our labor.

Amazing_Ad4787 − Your kids are not in college. She cooks, cleans, helps

the kids with homework. . I am in similar situation as your wife. .. I have free

time when the kids at school but I do dinner, dishes, homework. I can watch

TV at 10 pm . . I still work 6-7 hours at home. I do bills, repairs, kids activities.

My husband is jealous because I get occasional lunches with girlfriends. ..

My days actually are pretty busy but not in the morning.

This doesn’t sound like resentment toward his wife so much as exhaustion from having almost no unstructured time of his own.

He clearly respects her work, parenting, and the life they’ve built, yet still feels the imbalance when her weekdays include hobbies and social time while his weekends remain packed with obligations.

Both things can be true at once. Do you think he’s being unfair by comparing their free time, or is burnout making a legitimate imbalance harder to ignore?

How would you create more breathing room without turning it into a competition?
