Woman Tests Positive For Chlamydia After Two Years With Boyfriend And A Previous Negative Test

A positive STI result can be deeply confusing when both partners believed they had been tested and neither believes there was any infidelity. One woman is now trying to understand how she could have contracted chlamydia after nearly two years in a committed relationship.

She and her partner had been together for almost two years and had both tested negative for STIs near the beginning of their relationship.

Now, at 29, she has unexpectedly received a positive chlamydia diagnosis. Her doctor confirmed that her previous test had been negative, leaving her struggling to reconcile the result with what she knows about their relationship. She plans to repeat the test before drawing conclusions, but the unexpected diagnosis has left her worried, sad, and searching for possible explanations.

A woman in a long-term relationship is shocked by a new STI diagnosis despite both partners previously testing negative

'I got chlamydia (29f) in a long term relationship with (32m). How is that possible?'

So I just got diagnosed with chlamydia today and I‘m super shocked.

Both me and my partner have been together for almost two years and got tested the beginning of last year. We both were negative for STIs

I asked my doctor specifically if i was really negative last year, since it can be apparently dormant for a long time, and she said yes.. So how is that...

We definitely didn‘t cheat on each other.

I‘m going to get a second test tomorrow just to make sure, but I‘m really sad and confused. Have you had a situation like this?

Edit: i definitely didn‘t cheat, otherwise I would know why I have it and wouldn‘t post it on reddit.

Few medical results carry as much emotional weight as an unexpected STI diagnosis. The hardest part is often not the infection itself, which is treatable, but the story people immediately attach to it.

In a long-term relationship, a positive result can make someone question their memories, their previous test results, and even their partner, before they have enough information to know what happened.

The 29-year-old poster was understandably confused. She and her partner had been together for nearly two years and had both reportedly tested negative the previous year.

She also specifically asked her doctor whether her earlier result had truly been negative. Because she insists neither partner cheated, the diagnosis leaves her searching for another explanation. Importantly, the result alone cannot establish when the infection was acquired or prove infidelity. That distinction is easy to lose when emotions are running high.

A fresh perspective is to separate three questions that often become tangled together: Is the current test accurate? When was the infection acquired? And how was it transmitted?

Those are not the same question. A positive test can provide evidence of current infection without providing a timestamp. Likewise, a previous negative result may be highly reassuring while still depending on what was tested, which body site was sampled, and how the specimen was collected.

The CDC explains that chlamydia is frequently asymptomatic, with about three-quarters of infected women and roughly half of infected men reporting no symptoms.

Modern nucleic-acid amplification tests (NAATs) are highly sensitive and specific, but no diagnostic test is completely immune to inaccurate results. The CDC notes that specimen collection, laboratory conditions, and test operation can contribute to false results, while NAATs generally perform extremely well.

That is why getting clarification from her clinician is more useful than immediately constructing a theory about betrayal. A second test can help determine whether the initial result is reproducible, while the clinician can review exactly what was tested last year and what type of specimen was used.

If the diagnosis is confirmed, both partners should follow medical advice regarding treatment and sexual activity, because untreated partners can pass the infection back and forth. The CDC also recommends retesting about three months after treatment because repeat infections are common.

None of this proves that the poster’s relationship is fine, nor does it prove that something happened behind her back. It simply means that a laboratory result should not be forced to answer a question it was never designed to answer.

The most compassionate approach is to resist the urge to turn uncertainty into accusation. Confirm the result, review the medical history, follow treatment guidance, and then consider the relationship questions separately. A confusing diagnosis deserves careful investigation—not a verdict based on fear.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These commenters believed the most likely explanation was that one partner had been unfaithful, assuming the previous negative tests were accurate

PartyyLemons − Either your boyfriend lied about getting tested when he said he tested negative last year (did you see the results yourself? ). Or one of you cheated.

mariposa-princess − Even if it’s dormant you’d still test positive for it. Dormant just means you haven’t had symptoms yet and sometimes you never do.

He has to have cheated if you both previously tested negative. Unless you have a wildly incompetent doctor that told you the wrong results this time or last time.

nonniewobbles − I mean, come on.   You know the answer.   You both previously tested negative.

Your boyfriend did not experience some medical anti-miracle and catch an STI from the air. You know you definitely didn’t cheat.   Thus.

Live-Tangerine-9499 − Someone had to cheat on here. It’s not rocket science unless the test is wrong 😑

Much_Essay_9151 − You know the answer

These users added more nuance, explaining that an asymptomatic or “dormant” infection can still be detectable and that false-negative results are possible

Samael13 − I am not a doctor, and you should have a serious conversation with your PCP, but, for the record,

I'm prety sure that chlamydia being dormant does not prevent it from showing up on tests; it just means you're not showing symptoms yet.

It *can* be dormant a long time, but if you were *really* negative (and it's possible to get false negatives)

last year and you're testing positive *this* year, then it means you were exposed sometime between the last test and this test.

kia-audi-spider-legs − “. . got super angry because that means there is no trust in the relationship” Is catastophizing a bit.

Yeah trust has been impacted because an STI appeared with no simple explanation.

It’s natural and normal (and rational) to suspect that either party has had s__ with someone else.

You did the right thing by offering to find a possible explanation together, sorry that he didn’t meet you in the same spirit.

If it was me, without definitive explanation, I wouldn’t be willing to tolerate someone’s anger and bad temper.

He should be equally as confused, and equally as curious about finding out how this happened, but he’s acting defensive.

And he’s blaming you for the trust being impacted - when it’s not evident that it’s your fault. It’s suspicious to me, sorry.

This commenter used humor to dismiss unlikely explanations, joking that without another plausible exposure, infidelity was the obvious answer

xxserenityxx1 − Have either of you held a koala? If not someone cheated

These commenters shared personal experiences involving a previously negative test followed by a later chlamydia diagnosis, ultimately concluding that their partners had cheated

BelliAmie − I refused to believe it when this exact scenario happened to me. Don't put your head in the sand.

You know how. Don't be me! He lied and said he didn't have it when we both got tested because I was showing symptoms.

Ok_Juice_9888 − You were cheated on. The same exact thing happened to me.

I had surgery in 2022 and was tested before the surgery so it’s on my medical records I tested negative.

8 months later I thought I was pregnant and went to the doctor and found out I had the same STI as you and the symptoms I was feeling were...

I knew I didn’t sleep with anyone else.

We were together 3 years, and he still adamantly to this day denies cheating on me when it’s the only thing that could have happened.

Men suck, and men lie, especially when they’re caught. I’m so sorry you went through this, but unfortunately he cheated.

Men suck, and it’s horrible this is something that happens all the time. I’ve talked to many women who have our stories.

Be grateful it’s something curable and not a permanent sti. This will lead to something better.

I have now met the love of my life and he moved in with me a few months ago and I never thought I’d be this happy.

Leave him. Things will get better.

Would you wait for repeat testing and both sets of medical records before confronting the relationship issue?

Or would a confirmed positive after documented prior negatives already change how you viewed your partner?
