Husband Secretly Tests Their Daughter’s Paternity, and His Wife Starts Questioning Their 20-Year Marriage

in Social Issues

After 20 years of marriage, OP thought she had already proven where her loyalty stood. She had followed her husband through his military career, put her own plans aside, built their household, and eventually became a mother after years of fertility struggles.

So when her husband admitted he had secretly paternity-tested their daughter while she was asleep, the betrayal felt much bigger than a DNA test.

OP had never cheated or given him a reason to question whether their children were his. Her husband’s concern apparently came from the fact that both children resemble her more than him, particularly in their hair and eye color. She initially dismissed his request for a paternity test as an absurd insecurity.

Then she discovered a charge from a pharmacy and learned that he had gone ahead with the test without telling her.

Now OP is questioning whether she can remain married to someone who was willing to secretly investigate her fidelity after two decades together. What began as his attempt to silence an insecurity has left her wondering whether the marriage itself has been fundamentally damaged.

'AIO for considering leaving my husband after he secretly paternity-tested our kid?'

Buckle up potatoes, this one's a doozie. My husband (44M) and I (41F) got married in our early twenties.

When I was younger, I had always felt pretty strongly that I didn't want kids, but my husband did and we naively thought we'd figure it out.

Luckily for him, as I got older I started to feel more open to it. We eventually started trying to have kids in our mid-twenties,

but after a few years and some failed fertility treatments, our doctors told us we'd probably never have kids without IVF.

The issues were mainly with my husband (low/lazy swimmers),

so I figured the universe was secretly saving me but I decided to stay off birth control to leave the door open.

Fast forward 10 years, and I surprisingly got pregnant in my late thirties. We were beyond excited and welcomed a daughter into our family.

We decided to actively try for another child and a year after our daughter was born I got pregnant again (first try!) with our son. They are now 3 and...

Both our kids look like me, especially my daughter who looks exactly like I did as a child.

They both have brown hair and hazel eyes, while I have brown hair/eyes and my husband has red hair and green eyes.

Anyone who took high school biology would know that as the person with the darker complexion,

I have the dominant genes and the chances of our kids having coloring similar to my husband are slim to none, but I digress.

Anyway, everybody thinks they look like me and have little resemblance to my husband, and this is where it gets sticky.

My husband recently confessed that he sometimes worried that he was not the biological father of our kids! I was furious.

I've never cheated or given him any reason to doubt me in 20 years of marriage.

I've followed him all over the world (he's in the military), sacrificing time with my family and my career stability.

I've worked my ass off to take care of him, us, and all the things he didn't have the time or energy to deal with

(the home, cars, bills, dogs, family birthdays, the list goes on).

And he had the AUDACITY to tell me he wanted a paternity test so he could quiet the "intrusive thoughts"

he kept having because our kids don't look like him.

I was furious, but I laughed it off with an inner "oh hell no" because the idea is just ludicrous.

Like I would go and get myself pregnant by somebody else when I wasn't even sure I wanted kids in the first place? Seriously, WTF.

Fast forward to this week, when I'm going through our credit card statement and see a hefty charge at the CVS near his work.

I asked him about it, and he admitted that he had purchased a paternity test and SECRETLY TESTED OUR DAUGHTER WHILE I WAS SLEEPING AND DIDN'T TELL ME.

I. Am. Livid. I feel like he just pissed all over 20 years of marriage, all so he could get rid of some completely baseless "intrusive thoughts"

that maybe our kids weren't his. I'm not sure I can overcome his breach of trust and lack of faith.

I am seriously considering telling him I want half of everything, alimony, child support and majority custody and leaving his ungrateful ass. Am I overreacting?

Few things cut as deeply in a long marriage as discovering that the person who is supposed to know you best has been quietly questioning your honesty. Doubt can exist inside someone’s mind without being a betrayal, but acting on that doubt in secret can transform a private fear into a public wound within the relationship.

For this wife, the painful part was not simply that her husband wondered whether he was the biological father. It was the history behind that suspicion. She had spent roughly two decades with him, supported his military career, endured fertility struggles, and eventually built the family they had once feared they might never have.

When he secretly tested their daughter while she was asleep, she was left with a very different question: if he could privately investigate her fidelity after all those years, what did he actually believe about their marriage?

There is another perspective that deserves attention, however. His suspicion may not necessarily have begun as a conscious accusation that she cheated. He may have been experiencing genuine anxiety triggered by his children looking different from him, especially after years of infertility.

The problem is that anxiety can explain a behavior without making the behavior harmless. And the post’s genetics argument is weaker than the emotional argument: hair and eye color are influenced by multiple genes, not simple “dominant versus recessive” rules. A child’s resemblance to one parent cannot reliably establish paternity.

The International OCD Foundation explains that intrusive doubts can create powerful urges to seek certainty or reassurance.

Reassurance may reduce anxiety temporarily, but repeated checking can reinforce the cycle of doubt rather than resolve its underlying intolerance of uncertainty. Importantly, describing someone’s thoughts as “intrusive” does not by itself establish that they have OCD; persistent intrusive thoughts can occur for many reasons.

That distinction matters because the husband may have been trying to obtain certainty about something he found emotionally unbearable.

But a private DNA test did not only answer a biological question. It communicated something relational: I was sufficiently doubtful of you that I investigated without telling you. For a spouse who had given no stated reason for suspicion, that can feel profoundly humiliating.

At the same time, leaving a twenty-year marriage immediately after discovering the test is a major decision. The more useful question may be whether he understands why the secrecy was damaging and is willing to confront the anxiety that led him there.

A couples therapist could help separate the biological question from the trust problem, while an individual therapist could help him examine whether this was an isolated fear or part of a larger pattern of obsessive doubt.

The wife is not unreasonable for feeling betrayed. Yet the next decision does not have to be made solely from the shock of discovery. A DNA result can establish biology. It cannot repair trust. That work depends on whether both people are willing to confront what the test revealed about their marriage, not merely what it revealed about their children.

Check out how the community responded:

This group recommended individual or couples counseling before making a final decision

Old_Leadership_5000 − Not Overreacting. He's proved he's willing to throw away decades of trust over his "intrusive thoughts".

It's a sign he never really trusted you, or your commitment to your vows. What you do with this revelation is tricky.

You likely will need individual and couples counseling. And you'll be asking yourself if what your husband did is a deal-breaker.

notsoreligiousnow − NTA. What he did was a major betrayal to you and to your marriage. His intrusive thoughts excuse are pure b__lshit.

Though I’m a fan of going nuclear, I will say perhaps consider major counseling for you together and individually before lighting the fuse on your marriage.

Aggravating-Sock6502 − Agreed that this is a HUGE breech of trust and your husband was waaaaay out of line.

Ask yourself this. ..except for this incident, have you had a good marriage and want to remain married,

or were there other red flag behaviors you might have been unconsciously ignoring all this time?

If it's mostly been positive, then maybe see if through couples counseling, you could get to a point where you can move past the feelings

of anger and betrayal (which you are 100% entitled to feel) and can feel comfortable remaining in your marriage.

But if it's the latter, then maybe at least talk to a therapist on your own to help sort through your feelings

and decide if logically, divorce is what's best for you and the kids. Good luck, OP.

Dry_Mushroom7606 − You're not totally overreacting. This definitely feels like a betrayal, and I think counseling

could help you both discover why he felt he needed to do this, like where did these "intrusive thoughts" come from?

Were they his, or did someone else help plant them there? Good luck to you, OP.

These commenters suspected projection and wondered whether the husband might be hiding his own infidelity

Feed_The_Birds1964 − I hate to say this but I bet he did this because maybe he’s been cheating on you and he’s projecting that he’s not the father.

Before you even consider divorce you might wanna gather up evidence to find out what’s really going on

before you can think about divorce and how this’ll affect not only your life but your children’s lives.

Kryptonite-Rose − When the trust is gone there is no marriage. Younger me would have stayed.

Older me, in hindsight wished I had left then. In my case it was projection.

These users rejected “intrusive thoughts” as an excuse for secretly accusing a spouse of cheating

Stormtomcat − definitely NTA for feeling betrayed. also NTA for planning to leave him.

It sounds like there were 15 years between his diagnosis of lazy swimmers & your first pregnancy.

Did he get tested at any time between his mid-twenties and his late thirties? His health may have improved, improving the quality of his sperm.

Even if it didn't, having intrusive thoughts means you go to therapy.

Having intrusive thoughts means you talk to your partner about your mental health crisis. It does not mean you throw out accusations!

And then the 3rd betrayal : he tested his daughter behind your back. Especially heinous after everything you've sacrificed within your marriage.

SpiritedBody2130 − So you are just supposed to be ok that he accused you of cheating.

I don't understand how people say that a women isn't supposed to be hurt and feel betrayed when the men that are supposed to love them ask for paternity tests.

And then expect them act like nothing happened when the tests come back proving that they

are the father and are so happy and want to go on like they didn't just tear the woman's world apart

These Redditors felt the damaged trust could reasonably make divorce or separation worth considering

Forsaken-Photo4881 − I would feel SUPER betrayed. Not sure what I would do. Your husband shouts from the mountaintop that he doesn’t trust you AT ALL.

What to do with that is a tough question. Not one woman I know would blame you for kicking him in the crotch!

Divorce? Would be very tempting. Maybe counseling. But jeez …. maybe he needs reeducation in basic biology.

MLisaRC − I think divorce is overreacting if there are no other issues but I will also play devils advocate a little bit.

Cheating is rampant in the military if he's been in 20 years I bet he's seen over half of failed relationships around him end due to cheating,

or seen a coworker get away with cheating for ages.

It sits in the back of your brain and makes you think it's way more common than it is in reality. Which means it will linger and nag at him,

causing unwanted resentment. I get why he felt like he needed to but going behind your back was uncalled for.

Was secretly testing their daughter enough to justify ending the marriage, or would counseling be worth trying after twenty years together? And could trust ever feel the same afterward?
