CEO Jokes Employees Should Pay for Company Lunches, Then Brings Their Bonuses Into It

A workplace perk can feel a lot less generous when the person paying for it starts joking about taking something else away from employees to cover the cost.

OP works at a company where HR introduced monthly catered lunches as a way to encourage employees to socialize and build team connections. Nobody requested the lunches, but OP helps organize them, and with roughly 40–60 employees attending, the meals can become a significant expense.

During a recent conversation, the CEO asked how much the lunches typically cost. After hearing the estimate, he joked that employees should start contributing toward the meals.

Then he went one step further, suggesting that perhaps employees would rather pay for lunch than receive their annual cash bonuses. It was apparently meant as a passing joke, but OP found it remarkably tone-deaf, especially considering the CEO’s personal wealth and lifestyle.

An employee is stunned when the CEO jokes about making staff pay for company-sponsored lunches instead of bonuses

'CEO made a joke about employees paying for a HR event'

I hope it’s okay to post this here bc I’ve been wanting/needing to vent about it.

At my work, we get once a month catered lunches. Us employees never asked for the lunches. They were introduced by HR to encourage team bonding.

One of my tasks is to order the lunches and set everything up. They’re super casual lunches that just take place in the break room.

About 40-60 employees attend the lunches depending on how many people are in the office that day

so they can get pretty expensive depending on where we order from.

Recently, the CEO was asking my coworker how much the monthly lunches are on average. She gave her a rough average based on the last few.

When the CEO heard this, he chuckles and made a joke about how maybe employees should start pitching in to pay for the lunches..

Lunches that HR decided to put together and that we never asked for.. But it gets worse.

He then went on to joke about how wouldn’t that be better than the yearly cash bonuses.

It was just a passing dumb remark but holy hell it really shows how CEOs truly live on another planet.

This dude has multiple vacations homes but is annoyed bc a HR gift is sometimes pretty expensive.

Sometimes a throwaway joke reveals more about a workplace than an entire employee handbook. When someone with substantial authority jokes about making employees personally fund a benefit they never requested, the humor can land differently because everyone listening knows that the speaker has the power to influence whether that “joke” ever becomes reality.

The employees in this story were not demanding catered lunches as part of their compensation. HR introduced the monthly meals as a team-building initiative, and the person telling the story was even responsible for arranging them.

The CEO’s comment therefore felt strange on two levels: he was questioning the cost of something management had chosen to provide, then comparing that expense with employees’ annual cash bonuses. The reaction was less about one meal and more about what the remark seemed to communicate about priorities.

There is another perspective worth considering. The CEO may genuinely have been joking without intending to propose a policy change. Executives sometimes use humor casually around expenses because they are accustomed to discussing budgets at a high level.

What sounds like contempt to employees may have been an offhand attempt to lighten a conversation about rising costs. Yet intent does not completely determine impact. When someone controls company resources, even an unserious comment about removing compensation or charging employees can feel uncomfortable.

Organizational psychologist Adam Grant has written about how workplace culture is shaped not only by formal policies but by everyday signals from leaders. Employees pay attention to what leaders reward, criticize, joke about, and treat as important because those behaviors communicate what is genuinely valued inside an organization.

Research on psychological safety similarly suggests that employees are more likely to speak honestly when they believe leaders will respond without humiliation or retaliation.

That context explains why the remark could bother people even if nothing changes afterward. Employees hear the contrast differently from an executive.

For workers, a bonus represents compensation they may already rely upon, while catered lunches are a discretionary workplace perk. Putting those two things in the same joke can sound as though leadership views both as interchangeable expenses.

Still, one awkward comment does not necessarily reveal the CEO’s entire character. The more meaningful evidence would be what happens when budgets tighten: Does leadership cut employee compensation while preserving executive privileges? Does HR communicate transparently? Are employees treated as partners or simply as costs?

The strongest takeaway is therefore less “all CEOs are out of touch” and more that leaders should remember how differently their words travel downward. A joke that costs the speaker nothing can land heavily with the people whose salaries, bonuses, and benefits depend on decisions made in the room.

And perhaps that is why the comment felt so irritating: employees were not asking for another perk. They were simply watching leadership complain about the price of a perk leadership had chosen to give them.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These Redditors saw the CEO’s joke as proof that executives value money over employees

aizzo4 − Hey, one day, if you work hard enough, you may be able to help him get another vacation home.

Brains_Are_Weird − It's contempt. He genuinely thinks his employees are beneath him if that joke occurred to him.

ksobby − It’s been my experience that CEOs view company money as their own regardless of the source.

So yeah, theCEO feels that he paid for the lunch. Humility is not their strong point.

AmbiiX − Had my area manager scold us yesterday because according to her we're donating too much food and should be trying harder to sell these products in store.

(Usuable wastage gets donated to food banks, like dented tins, part cases etc)

Our store makes over $80,000 weekly we donate maybe half a small trolleys worth every month.

The items 'wasted' totalled less than $50, for how angry she was you'd have thought it was way more.

These people truly don't care about anything other than increasing profits. People are invisible to them, just numbers on a page to lower.

These commenters answered the situation with dark workplace humor and pop-culture jokes

Cat0102 − Next he’ll be replacing your Christmas bonus with the “Jelly of the Month” club.

Greenpaw9 − Sounds like maybe he will be on the menu next month. Ha. Ha. Ha.

This group mocked the contradiction of forcing team events while complaining about their cost.

47981247 − It's a special kind of insanity to force in person team building events, then complain about the cost of it.

Paladine_PSoT − Straight up boycott the next one. Let hr spend the money on food nobody eats

and everyone sits outside the room eating their own they brought. Cite the ceo's joke as the reason.

These users floated collective pushback, including boycotting the next company event

GuacamolePacket − If we all just agree on the same day. We can really easily fix this.

dsjunior1388 − Oh to be in that crowd, calling out "we get it, we're not worth it. "

Obviously I doubt I'd actually do this unless I was a week from retirement but damn, it'd be satisfying

Was this simply awkward executive humor, or did the bonus comment reveal how leadership really viewed the lunches? And if workers never requested the perk, should HR ask them whether they’d rather have something else?
