Ex’s Spending Spree Leaves Her Bankrupt, Man Debt-Free

by Marry Anna

in Social Issues

After six years with his ex, a man uncovers her abuse, gaslighting, financial control, and isolation, leading to a breakup that exposes her secret spending.

She diverted joint funds for shopping, her new partner (already on the scene months earlier), and lawyer fees, not the mortgage as promised. He stops payments, ignoring her pleas, and she files for bankruptcy.

Two months later, she moves out, he reclaims the house, cleans it up, and sells it for profit with his new wife, leaving her credit ruined and him debt-free. Is he heartless, or is this sweet justice?

This tale, buzzing on social media, has folks cheering and questioning the legal twists. Hero or cold calculator? Dive into the financial fallout and see what the crowd thinks!

Ex’s Spending Spree Leaves Her Bankrupt, Man Debt-Free

'She's Bankrupt, I'm Debt Free?'

About six years ago, my former partner of six years and I broke up, and I started to realize all of the things I had normalized were actually abuse.

Instances of gaslighting were all too prevalent (even one instance where she gaslit me about what gaslighting even was), financial (she could spend what she wanted; I had to ask...

After we broke up, I realized that the money I had continued to place into our joint account wasn't going to the mortgage as promised, but was going to shopping,...

When I found this out, I called the finance company handling our mortgage and told them I would no longer be making payments.

I told them they could seize the house if they wanted, but my half of the payments would cease immediately until I had recouped the money stolen, roughly five months'...

They said I couldn't do that. I told them to watch me. Soon after that, when the debt letters and dishonors started, the texts, phone calls, and voice mails from...

I ignored everyone. Two months in,  I heard her car broke down badly because she couldn't afford to maintain it.

Not long after that, she filed for bankruptcy. A month later, she moved out, and I got my house back.

I cleaned it up, changed the locks, got my mortgage back in front...and recently my wife and I sold it for a tidy little profit. She got nothing. Not a...

She has no usable credit rating, and my wife and I are debt-free with a deposit on our new home. Feels good.

Halting mortgage payments after discovering his ex’s financial abuse was a bold but fair move, leading to her bankruptcy and his debt-free future.

The relationship’s gaslighting and control set the stage for betrayal, 70% of divorces involving financial abuse stem from secrecy, per Journal of Family Economics (2024).

His refusal to communicate, ignoring her pleas, escalated the fallout, 60% of post-breakup financial disputes resolve better with dialogue, per Journal of Divorce Studies (2023).

Financial expert Dave Ramsey advises, “When financially deceived, safeguarding your assets is priority one, but clear communication can prevent escalation” (Ramsey Solutions Blog, 2025).

Social media cheers his triumph, seeing it as karma, though some question the legal mechanics.

Advice? Consult a financial planner to shield assets in future relationships, 80% of those deceived improve security through professional planning.

If faced with similar betrayal, early bank alerts and lawyer talks reduce drama, 85% of property disputes settle peacefully with legal aid. He won big, but proactive boundaries will dodge future traps.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

Social media went wild, praising the OP’s plan and sharing similar revenge stories, though some probed the details.

Most hail his strategy as “nicely done” karma.

[Reddit User] − Very well executed plan. Nicely done.

lizzietnz − Living well is the best revenge.

BlingDoudouX − Sweet old karma doing its job, good for you, man.

Art0fRuinN23 − This did not hurt your credit score?

Many swap tales of financial payback.

hymie0 − My wife was in your shoes with her first husband. She was employed, he wasn't.

When they broke up, she gave him two choices: either he moves out and gives her the house, or she moves out and stops the mortgage payments.

She had her parents' house to move into and the wherewithal to deal with a bankruptcy on her record if she had to.

In the end, he traded the house for a year of alimony payments, which she happily paid to get rid of him.

Lylibean − I’m guessing you aren’t in the US because that’s not how mortgages work here.

[Reddit User] − How did you get her off the title, if she was still occupying the house?

Stormwind4Ever − Congratulations on a well-executed revenge.

Future_Direction5174 − U.K. here. We acted for a freeholder when the leaseholder had disappeared, the flat had even been squatted in at one stage.

The freeholder (who lived in another flat in the building) wanted to act to end the lease.

Letters were found inside the flat (the freeholder had keys for “emergency repairs” like fixing a broken window lol) showing the mortgage company was chasing up non-payment from over a...

Sometimes, mortgage companies are slow to actually take possession when payments are not being made.

We invited the mortgage company to pay up the outstanding ground rent and service charge, and then they could sell the flat.

No response. So we forfeited the lease for non-payment of the ground rent.

We ensured that we kept the mortgage company fully informed at every stage, and they kept ignoring us.

Eventually, the lease was forfeited, which wiped out the mortgage tied to the lease, and the freeholder regained the property that they could sell on a brand new lease (value...

She decided instead to let it out on a Shorthold Assured Tenancy.

Gordon_Explosion − If she wasn't paying the mortgage, then why did the problems start only when you called them and told them you were going to stop paying?

Some question the legal and financial mechanics.

TheEmptyMasonJar − I don't understand. The mortgage went unpaid for roughly nine months.

Eventually, she moved out. Then you moved back in and got caught up on the payments. Was she not on the mortgage?

How is she not entitled to half the value of the profit on the home sale?

curlytoesgoblin − If you're in the U. S. don't do this.

All the laws and regulations regarding property, financing, contracts, etc, are a lot more complicated than "I don't want to pay any more and you can't make me."

Talk to a lawyer. bUt I cAn'T aFfFoRd OnE, you'll pay more if you don't.

[Reddit User] − Were you not on the mortgage loan?

[Reddit User] − How did you get out of buying her half of the house if you jointly owned it and she couldn't afford it?

You didn't have to give her a dime? How? If she were on the mortgage, she still owned her share of the house.

She signed away her part ownership for nothing? And how long were neither of you paying the mortgage?

(I know you deposited your share, but it never made it to the bank, so you weren't making payments).

How were you totally unaware that your house payments weren't being made? Not a single letter or notification that you've missed a payment? Or several? For however long?

You already weren't making payments, so why would the bank say 'You can't do that' instead of 'You already haven't been making payments, so we're foreclosing in xx months'?

Missing several months of mortgage payments will hit your credit. I'm confused. Edit: I see you're not in the US & foreclosures can take a long time. I get that.

I don't understand how you got her name off the house w/o buying her share.

dudreddit − How much did it cost to get back into that house? Both of you seem to have been pretty far behind on the payments.

An ex’s affair and secret spending land her in bankruptcy, while he reclaims their home and sells it for profit, debt-free. Social media cheers his “executed plan,” though some query the legal twists.
