Woman Points to the Exact Beef She Wants, Then Two Butchers Somehow Make Buying It Impossible

A routine grocery trip became so frustrating for OP that she left the store without the food she came for and contacted management afterward.

She needed a large piece of beef from the butcher counter to prepare soup for her grandfather after his hospital discharge. OP speaks Chinese and says there was no language barrier, yet the employee repeatedly ignored her request for the specific piece she was pointing toward.

Instead, he offered smaller pieces, walked away to serve another customer, and eventually told her to ask someone else. The second employee also declined to help, leaving OP feeling as though the two workers were deliberately avoiding the request.

After waiting through several attempts to communicate, she finally walked away and told the cashier she wanted to complain about being refused service.

The cashier gave her the manager’s number, and OP was told the complaint would be passed along to the owner. Now she’s wondering whether she was being unnecessarily difficult or whether the employees’ behavior genuinely warranted a complaint.

'Got refused meat and service at the supermarket'

So I was at the Chinese supermarket (I am Chinese and I speak Chinese),

and I needed to buy a big piece of beef to make soup for my grandpa who just got discharged from the hospital.

I was waiting in the beef section waiting and calling "Excuse me!" Waiting for someone to come.

This guy in his 40s/50s came over and I said "I would like this piece of meat please" and points at the meat in the front.

The guy picked up a piece of meat laid out in the back closer to him and showed it to me,

which was half the size and I said "No, I want this piece of beef in the front".

He proceeded to either pick up another piece of small meat from the back or pretended to as I didnt see him reach in.

I took a deep breath and repeated again "i want this piece of beef right here".

He then puts down the piece of beef and without making eye contact or saying anything walked over to the other side aka chicken isle

and started helping this other customer that was waiting in line to get the chicken wings.

I was angry already but I need the piece of beef so I continued waiting looking at him.

he saw me that I didnt leave so he came back and asked "what do you want?" And which i said "I wanted this piece of beef" while pointing at...

He confirmed "you want this beef that is close to you right?" And I said "yes".

He then said "ask this person to help you" and the other person right beside him said without looking "cant get it, i cant get it"

and then both just pretended they did their jobs and went about their ways.

I then left because I felt like Im being treated like a fool and Im begging for the meat.

There was no miscommunication as I repeated myself at least 4x and I was speaking in Chinese.

It wasnt a matter of it being busy, because i was there before the chicken wing guy.

All the dude had to do was pick uo the big piece of beef in the front that was 6 inches away from where he picked up his small piece...

It shouldnt be a matter of "i cant pick my own meats" or "itll unravel up the stacks", and it wasnt like i pay per piece bc it is pay...

I felt like a karen bc I told the cashier I need to complain to the manager that they refuse to sell meat to me

(I should have said they refused service Im not good with words and I was angry) and the cashier laughed and gave me the phone number.

I feel like it's just a piece of meat but since its just that why is it so difficult them to reach into the counter and I left without it?

TLDR: i tried to ask for big piece of meat 4x and was brushed off by 2 butcher who didnt want to help;

i called to complain to store manager --> result is that they say they will tell the owner

Edit: added the photo of the tray of beef they have out, they try to sell some piece that you can pick up with one hand,

might delete it later if anyone thinks it looks unclean.

There is a particular frustration in asking for something simple and being made to feel as though the request itself is unreasonable. When someone repeatedly ignores a clear request, the problem stops being the object being requested and becomes the feeling of being dismissed.

That is what seems to have happened here. The customer wanted a specific large piece of beef to prepare soup for her grandfather after his hospital discharge. She repeatedly pointed to the same piece and explained what she wanted, yet the employee kept offering smaller pieces, walked away to serve another customer, and eventually directed her to another worker who also refused to help.

By the end, she was no longer simply trying to buy beef. She was trying to understand why two employees seemed unwilling to perform such a basic part of their job.

A different perspective is that there may have been a store-specific reason for not handing over that particular piece. Perhaps the butcher was following an internal procedure, the piece was reserved for a particular preparation, or the display was arranged in a way customers were not supposed to alter.

But if such a rule existed, the employees had a straightforward solution: explain it. Silence and repeated substitution make a normal customer request feel like deliberate dismissal.

Research on customer service consistently shows that perceived respect matters alongside the practical outcome.

Psychologist Susan Fiske’s work on social perception has demonstrated that people strongly evaluate others along dimensions of warmth and competence. In everyday interactions, being treated as though one’s request is legitimate and worth addressing can influence whether an encounter feels respectful, even when the final outcome is disappointing.

That helps explain why the poster’s reaction escalated. Being told “we don’t sell that particular piece” would have been frustrating but understandable.

Being repeatedly ignored while watching employees serve someone else communicated something entirely different. The lack of explanation created uncertainty, and uncertainty often makes people search for a personal reason behind someone’s behavior.

The complaint to the manager therefore does not automatically make the customer a “Karen.” A customer is allowed to report service they believe was dismissive or inappropriate.

The important distinction is how the complaint is made. She did not describe screaming at employees or demanding compensation; she explained that she had repeatedly asked for assistance and felt deliberately brushed off.

There is also something poignant about the original reason for the purchase. She was not buying an extravagant item. She wanted to make soup for a family member who had just returned from the hospital. That context does not give her special entitlement to a particular cut, but it helps explain why walking away empty-handed felt especially disappointing.

The best takeaway is simple: if a requested item cannot be sold, employees should say why. A clear explanation can turn a frustrating interaction into an understandable one. Refusing to explain, meanwhile, leaves the customer filling the silence with their own assumptions.

Sometimes the real problem is not that someone said “no.” It is that they made you stand there wondering why they would not simply answer you.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These Redditors agreed OP was not a Karen and the employees were the ones acting badly

Championvilla − You are not the Karen. They refused you service for no reason. It hurts the business when that happens so the owner needs to know.

One person they do that to tells their friends who tell their friends and the business suffers.

LivingDeadCade − What the hell was their problem? Definitely not the Karen!

Environmental_Rub256 − If anyone is a karen, it is both of those employees.

You specifically asked for something and they gave you the runaround and then refused to sell it to you.

This group suspected the workers were intentionally saving the better-looking meat for someone else.

The_Real_Flatmeat − Sounds to me like they put the nicest looking piece of meat at the front of the case to be attractive but were told to sell the other...

NecessaryLight2815 − You are not the Karen. I think they were saving that piece for themselves later or a friend. Very strange behavior of theirs

This commenter believed the treatment may have been driven by misogyny

opaul11 − That sounds like good old fashioned misogyny

These users encouraged OP to leave reviews so the business knows about the poor service

susieq15 − All businesses care about reviews. Leave a review in Chinese on whatever websites are popular where you are.

nmorse101 − What did the manager say? Consider making online reviews about the poor service from both the meat department and checkout person (laughing)

These Redditors said customers should be allowed to choose the specific item they are paying for

dabbyone − Wegman’s fresh fish department (Webster) I looked over the pricey sea scallops and indicated the 5 I wanted.

He then proceeded to pick out smaller scallops closer to him. I objected, insisting that I wanted the ones I pointed to.

He continued to offer resistance until I said “do I need to get the store manager? ” Only then did he reluctantly serve my request.

Very bad customer service!

shootathought − I wouldn't have bought anything from them at all after that .

Was complaining to management appropriate, or would walking away have been enough? And what possible store policy could explain refusing an item sitting right in front of a customer?
