Man Finds 9,631 Photos of Himself on Roommate’s Computer, Then Reveals One Crucial Detail

in Social Issues

Nine thousand six hundred and thirty-one photographs of your roommate sounds like a nightmare unless your roommate happens to have four paws.

OP initially presented what appeared to be a disturbing privacy violation. His roommate had accumulated 9,631 photographs and several videos of him, including pictures taken while he slept in different parts of the house, exercised, ate, and relaxed. After discovering the collection, OP confronted her, but she insisted that he was being silly and even recorded his complaint.

She then became protective of her computer and refused to let him near the desk after he accidentally changed its keyboard language. OP understandably wondered whether he was overreacting to his roommate’s obsessive photography habit. Then, in the second edit, he finally supplied the critical detail: OP is a cat.

Suddenly, the enormous folder of pictures looks less like surveillance and more like the completely predictable digital archive of someone who is extremely attached to their pet.

He panics over thousands of photos his roommate took, then reveals the shocking truth: he’s a cat

'Am I overreacting - My roommate is taking photos of me?'

So I (18M) have been with my roommate (36F) (let's call her H) for 11 years.

She's an awesome roommate, keeps both our areas clean, gets the groceries, is always friendly, though she wakes me up when I'm sleeping sometimes.

But a few days ago she left her phone unlocked on accident, and I found a TON of pictures of me.

I went on her computer and found a folder called "[my name]", it had 9,631 pictures and a couple videos of me sleeping

(most of them from all angles, in my bed, on the couch, in my desk chair,

even that one time I fell asleep on the carpet in the middle of the living room), exercising, or eating. I was really freaked out!

I tried to confront her over this, but she just told me I was being a silly boy,

then got mad when she found out I accidentally changed her keyboard language to Arabic (no, I don't know how I did this either).

She isn't letting me anywhere near the desk anymore, not even to sit in my (very nice) desk chair!

She thinks taking these pictures is normal (she even took a video of me complaining at her!), but I'm kinda freaked out still.

So, Reddit, am I overreacting about my roommate's numerous photos and videos of me?

EDIT: I am a cat.

EDIT 2: Picture example, and cat tax

Man Finds 9,631 Photos of Himself on Roommate’s Computer, Then Reveals One Crucial Detail

Few things are more unsettling than discovering that someone has been quietly documenting you without your knowledge. The feeling of being watched can make an ordinary room suddenly feel unfamiliar, especially when you had assumed that your private moments were exactly that private.

At first glance, this story sounds like a serious privacy violation. The roommate has thousands of photographs and videos of the narrator sleeping, eating, and going about daily life, apparently without permission. From a human perspective, that would understandably feel invasive.

The sheer number, 9,631 images, makes the discovery even more alarming. But the final edit completely changes the emotional calculation: the “18M” narrator is a cat, and the roommate is apparently a devoted human caretaker with an enormous collection of pet photographs.

That twist also offers a funny perspective on why the roommate considered the behavior normal. Humans frequently photograph animals during ordinary moments because pets cannot pose on command and their spontaneous expressions feel precious.

What looks like surveillance from the cat’s perspective is more likely sentimental documentation from the owner’s perspective. The sleeping photos, food pictures, exercise shots, and videos are not evidence of sinister observation so much as an unusually comprehensive feline archive.

Psychologist Sonia Lyubomirsky has written about the relationship between positive emotions and the tendency to savor ordinary experiences. Savoring involves deliberately paying attention to pleasant moments and preserving memories of experiences that bring happiness.

Photographs can become one way people hold onto those everyday moments, particularly when they involve emotionally meaningful relationships.

Seen through that lens, the folder containing thousands of pictures is less disturbing and more revealing. The roommate apparently finds this cat’s ordinary existence worth remembering: sleeping on furniture, eating, exercising, and occasionally collapsing dramatically onto the carpet.

The cat interprets the behavior as suspicious because it does not understand the cultural institution of the “cat tax”, humans apparently feel compelled to photograph their pets whenever they do something remotely adorable.

Even the reaction to the confrontation fits the joke. The roommate calling the cat a “silly boy,” banning him from the desk, and recording his complaint suggests that she has no idea her subject considers himself the victim of an elaborate surveillance operation.

Meanwhile, the cat’s accidental keyboard-language sabotage provides an entirely different interpretation of the household conflict.

So, technically, the narrator is not overreacting. From a human perspective, thousands of secret photographs would be concerning. From a cat perspective, however, this is less a privacy scandal and more evidence that he has accidentally become the main character of someone’s camera roll.

The real mystery is how an animal that supposedly spends most of the day sleeping has managed to generate 9,631 photographs. At this point, the roommate may need an intervention or the cat may need to accept that he is, unfortunately, very photogenic.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These Redditors appreciated the cat-perspective joke and how convincingly the story was written

ChaosArtificer − eta: also the changing the keyboard language to arabic is something my cat has actually done.

no I STILL don't know how, he was on the keyboard for less than 10 seconds and this took forever to figure out how to fix, esp since i could...

BrianRooneyBass − You had me going, kitty. Nicely done

This group jokingly framed the roommate’s photos as serious violations of the cat’s privacy and consent

Not_Cleaver − NTC - Taking photos without obtaining your consent is boundary breaking.

I think you should go no contact with your roommate and display your displeasure by slighting moving glasses off of counters until they break.

Post this to r/AmITheCloaca, they’d love it.

two-of-me − You should ask the pawyers over at r/legalcatadvice if you have a case for stalking or even underage cat content.

Very shady behavior on the part of your roommate. I’d feel violated too.

These commenters humorously suggested classic cat behavior as revenge against the troublesome roommate

Leo_the_Lurker − Your roommate is clearly hinting that she would like you to bring her a bird or a rodent.

Bring her birds and rodents. Ladies love that sort of stuff.

BartimaeAce − Run, OP! ! She is filming you without your consent (contrary to what some people believe, mreoowww means NO! ),

and then gaslighting and infantalising you when you try bringing up your concerns. Has she been showing other red flag manipulative behaviours?

Has she been controlling your food and your bathroom habits, for she makes sure you only get to eat when she feels it's right for you,

and ignoring your complaints of hunger otherwise? Has she been isolating you from the outside world, and trying to keep you confined to the apartment?

I've heard far too many stories from friends of mine in similar situations to you. You do realise why she's been taking so many pictures and videos of you, don't...

She's been posting all of them on the internet!

There's unfortunately a very lucrative market of sickos who enjoy watching such footage take non-consensually from poor unfortunate souls like you.

In fact, the internet is flooded with such twisted content, and social media companies are doing nothing to stop it.

You need to protect yourself before more of your life is stolen from you and farmed to the internet for views.

If you do decide to stay, then you need to lay out your boundaries firmly!

If she refuses to stop, show her that her actions have consequences. My friends have told me some very effective methods.

Push her things off tables, ideally you would try to smash the phone with which she recorded her twisted videos,

but if that's not available then any of her things will do. Keep breaking them until she understands.

If she's going to ignore your boundaries, then consistently invade *her* personal space! See how *she* likes it.

Distract her at the most inconvenient moments, jump into lap while she's busy, keep humming loudly under your breath when she needs to focus.

If she tries getting physical with you, then fight back and scratch her.

Actually, that works any time you feel particularly angry with her. And if she keeps trying to control your bathroom schedule (disgusting),

then show her you can't be controlled! Deliberately violate her rules.

She'll get the point soon enough, and realise the consequences of violating your trust. Good luck, OP. Hope this helps.

xxjasper012 − Nta She isn't letting me anywhere near the desk anymore, not even to sit in my (very nice) desk chair!

You have to be more assertive OP. You can't let your roommate take over your property (everything in the house) like this.

You have a right to use the things you worked hard for (being a gremlin between naps is very hard work).

Maybe you should go on a vacation (run out when the door gets opened) to remind your roommate how much they actually need you around

These Redditors extended the joke with absurd suggestions about lawyers, danger, and finding outside help

Known-Quantity2021 − You are in great danger. Check her phone to see if she has travel plans for Ohio. You need to find a safe place.

I suggested you contact Taylor Swift. She will make sure that you are taken care of.

cwolf-softball − *One click. Unknown number of posts crying out in silence. All gone. made it stupid easy to clean up my entire history

on Reddit and get my info pulled from data broker sites too. * price obtainable sharp fly bear observation physical oil amusing steep

This commenter initially took the roommate timeline seriously and was baffled by the idea of living together since age seven

Extension-Loan5951 − i was like wtf 😭😭she’s been ur roommate since u were 7?? ?

Was the cat overreacting, or does nearly 10,000 unauthorized portraits justify knocking at least one glass off the counter? And more importantly, how many cat photos officially becomes “too many”?
