Pregnant Woman Checks Her Ultrasound Notes and Discovers Her OBGYN Suspects Twins—but Never Told Her

Pregnancy can make good communication with a medical team feel especially important. Even reassuring appointments may leave patients with questions, but finding unexpected information in your records afterward can make you wonder whether you were given the complete picture in the first place.

That concern hit one expectant mother after she visited her new OBGYN at six weeks because of unusual pain. An ultrasound confirmed that the pregnancy was in the uterus, and the doctor reportedly told her that everything appeared normal so far. Later, she became curious about something the technician had not discussed and requested her medical notes.

Instead of finding a simple answer, she discovered that the scan documented two fetal poles and two heartbeats, with twins suspected. Combined with an earlier medication concern, the discovery left her questioning her confidence in the practice. Keep reading to see why she is considering leaving.

She discovers her doctor documented twins but never told her, making her question everything

'AIO- OBGYN didn’t tell me I’m having twins'

Back in July I went to a new OBGYN for the first time (we had recently moved).

During the meeting I explained that I had been trying to get pregnant and also that I thought I had a yeast infection.

She didn’t test me for pregnancy from the bloodwork I can see but did prescribe me a medication for my yeast infection.

Thankfully I checked before taking it that it would affect early pregnancy and I tested to be on the safe side and got a positive pregnancy test (very early very...

I reached out she gave me different medication and it got resolved.

Fast forward, I’m now 6 weeks and have been experiencing pain on one side so they brought me in for an ultrasound to make sure it wasn’t ectopic.

The tech didn’t say much during the ultrasound other then that the baby was in the uterus and confirmed when I asked if it was too early to hear a...

The doctor met with us after and said everything looked normal so far come back end of next week.

I was scrolling through Reddit and saw that often for 6 weeks they should at least see the heartbeat even if they can’t hear it.

So I reached out for my medical notes from the scan to see if anything was said about a heartbeat

and I see in the notes they recorded not one but two heartbeats and fetal poles and suspect twins….

I feel like it’s weird they didn’t mention that at the appointment.

It was pretty clear in the paperwork and now I feel weird about my dr. Like they might keep things from me that are happening in my own body.

And I don’t like that.

Adding in the fact she didn’t think to test me for pregnancy before prescribing something

that could cause a miscarriage when she knew I was trying makes me feel like she might just be bad at her job.

Im thinking about switching offices. Am I overreacting?

Few things make a person feel more vulnerable than realizing someone else knew something important about their body before they did. Pregnancy already comes with uncertainty, so discovering significant information in medical notes, rather than hearing it from the doctor sitting across the room, can turn ordinary anxiety into a deeper question: *Can this person be trusted with my care?*

For the OP, the emotional issue is bigger than the possibility of twins. She went into the ultrasound frightened about one-sided pain and the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy. She left reassured that everything looked normal, only to later read documentation describing two fetal poles, two recorded heartbeats, and suspected twins.

Combined with her earlier medication experience, that discovery understandably created a pattern in her mind. What might look like two unrelated clinical moments to a physician can feel interconnected to a patient: Important things keep happening, and I seem to be the last person told.

There is another perspective worth considering, though. At roughly six weeks, pregnancy findings can still be preliminary, and clinicians may hesitate to present an uncertain ultrasound observation as a confirmed diagnosis.

The doctor’s intention therefore may not have been secrecy at all. She may have wanted another scan before confidently discussing twins. Yet intention and impact are different things. Saying, “We see findings that could indicate twins, but it is too early to confirm,” would have preserved uncertainty without leaving the patient unaware.

The ethical principle behind that distinction is important. The American Medical Association’s Code of Medical Ethics explains that truthful, open physician-patient communication is fundamental to both trust and patient autonomy.

Its guidance recognizes that doctors do not necessarily have to communicate every piece of information immediately or simultaneously, particularly when circumstances justify delayed disclosure.

However, relevant medical information generally should not simply be withheld without the patient’s knowledge or consent, and communication should reflect the patient’s needs and circumstances.

That helps explain why the OP’s discomfort deserves more consideration than simply asking whether the doctor technically did anything wrong. Trust is cumulative.

Once an earlier experience has made someone question a clinician’s judgment, another unexplained omission can carry disproportionate psychological weight. Her reaction may therefore represent damaged confidence rather than an overreaction to one ultrasound.

Switching practices would not necessarily mean declaring this OB-GYN incompetent. A more practical standard is simpler: does the OP feel comfortable relying on this physician throughout a pregnancy, including when decisions become complicated or frightening?

She could request the complete ultrasound report, obtain another professional interpretation, and decide whether the explanation restores confidence.

If she continually feels compelled to audit her own records to discover what is happening, finding another provider may be a reasonable act of self-advocacy. The bigger question for readers is where they would draw that line between understandable clinical caution and communication poor enough to break trust.

Check out how the community responded:

These Redditors urged OP to switch doctors after the medication mistake and other concerning care

TaxiLady69 − I wouldn't be taking any more chances with her. I would definitely get a new doctor. NOR

crytzal − NOR. Definitely switch obgyns. So messed up to give meds that could be harmful during early pregnancy to

someone who's s__ually active and trying to get pregnant. Is this like someone who graduated during COVID and online school?

CharZero − That is all crazy and she is incompetent. If she works for a larger clinic or hospital, let them know why you are leaving.

HekateSpeaks − NOR- this all sounds very weird.

Medication that can cause miscarriage, not mentioning the possibility of twins, no mention of seeing heartbeat.

All of this is too weird for me. I would switch doctors. If you are having twins you may be sent to another doctor who specializes in fetal medicine anyway.

SuluSpeaks − It's the mistake with meds that would have me changing doctors.

This group said the doctor may have avoided mentioning twins because six weeks can be too early to confirm.

ittybittytitty_com − It’s so early they probably don’t want to make statements like that if they can’t confirm it.

I would still get a new one because this one just seems kind of lazy, but I wouldn’t read too much of the fact that they didn’t mention anything at...

It is really difficult to get a heartbeat that early, and many offices do not want to try

because it can cause the person to panic if they aren’t able to detect it yet.

Especially because estimated time of conception can be off by a few days in either direction.

You can change doctors for any reason, so of you don’t like this one don’t endure an entire pregnancy with them.

MoonageDayscream − If they can't confirm twins at six weeks I can understand not saying anything

because it could be the difference between you having a happy and healthy single pregnancy and thinking that you lost a baby when you did not.

Nor, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Old_Draft_5288 − Given you were 6 weeks, I believe they weren't certain or else they would have,

It's not fun to say "maybe you have twins" without being able to say for sure. That'll equally p__s off a patient if they are wrong. .. just one POV.

These Redditors shared or highlighted how poor communication around twin pregnancies can create unnecessary stress

daygloalien − My ob called and I was downstairs doing laundry. She said there was a problem with the ultrasound.

I called back within three minutes and got a recorded msg saying she was in vacation for 2 weeks. The problem was twins.

LikelyLioar − I just want to clarify that a fetus doesn't have a heart that early.

There's an electrical pulsation that people refer to as a heartbeat, but no actual heart.
