Teen Wears the Same Bra for Five Days, TikTok Comments Make Her Question Everything

Personal hygiene can be surprisingly confusing when nobody ever teaches you the basics. Bras are particularly tricky because they may still look clean after several wears, and unlike underwear or socks, there is no universally obvious rule telling you when they need to go into the laundry.

That uncertainty led one 17-year-old Redditor to ask the internet for some sisterly advice. She explained that she normally wears the same bra for around five days, sometimes stretching it to a week if there is no noticeable sweat, odor, or dirt.

She had never experienced skin problems and assumed her routine was fine until she saw someone with a similar habit get heavily criticized online. Suddenly worried that she had misunderstood basic hygiene, she asked Reddit what was considered normal. Scroll down to see what people taught her.

A teen wonders if wearing the same bra for nearly a week is hygienic and asks others for guidance

'as a girl, how often should I change my bra?'

17F so i normally wear a bra for 5 days in a row before changing into another. my rule of thumb has basically been:

if it doesn't smell like sweat or look dirty yet, it’s fine to wear, so sometimes as long as 1 week 😭

i never smell and i’ve never had any skin issues, but i’m starting to wonder if this is actually hygienic cuz i saw a tiktok of someone

who does the same thing and the comments DRAGGED the hell out of her for being dirty so now im getting paranoid.

i honestly don't know if this is normal or not. i never had a mom who cared enough to teach me all this,

so i’ve just been doing what makes sense to me this whole time. please be my mother/sis and teach me 🙏

edit: Thank you so much to everyone who responded!!❤️🤧🥹i read each of these comments and took notes.

It is a lot to respond to each one individually, but just know that i’ve learned more in a few hours than i have in years lol.

I’m definitely changing my routine now!

Sometimes embarrassment comes not from doing something harmful, but from suddenly discovering that other people follow rules nobody ever taught you. For this 17-year-old, a TikTok comment section transformed an ordinary personal habit into something she felt ashamed of. Yet her question deserves practical guidance, not ridicule.

The OP had developed a straightforward system: wear a bra until it smelled sweaty or appeared dirty, usually around five days and occasionally a week. She had never experienced odor or skin problems, so there was little evidence in her daily life suggesting anything needed to change.

Psychologically, that makes sense. People learn many hygiene routines through family observation rather than formal instruction. When that guidance is absent, they naturally create habits based on visible consequences.

What hurt here wasn’t simply learning that her routine might be different from others. It was realizing there was an unwritten expectation everyone else seemed to know.

Interestingly, the internet’s “fresh bra every day or you’re dirty” response isn’t a universal medical rule either. Someone exercising heavily in humid weather may need a clean bra much sooner than a person spending several cool, inactive hours indoors. Sweat level, skin sensitivity, activity, fabric, and duration of wear all matter. Hygiene is contextual rather than a morality test.

Dermatologist Alok Vij, MD, explains through Cleveland Clinic’s guidance on washing bras that a reasonable general guideline is washing a bra after about two to three wears. A short period of wear with little perspiration may not even constitute a complete “wear,” whereas several sweaty hours could effectively count as more than one.

Bras also collect body oils, dead skin cells, and perspiration, which can encourage bacteria and yeast and eventually contribute to irritation, rashes, odor, or localized infection. The American Cleaning Institute similarly recommends two to three wears and suggests giving bras a rest day between uses.

That makes the OP’s five-to-seven-day routine longer than the usual recommendation, but it doesn’t justify strangers labeling her “dirty.”

A better adjustment would be keeping several comfortable bras in rotation, allowing each one to rest between wears, and washing them after roughly two or three normal uses. After significant sweating or exercise, changing sooner makes sense.

Most importantly, she shouldn’t carry shame away from this experience. At 17, asking a basic question because nobody taught her is evidence that she’s trying to take care of herself. She received new information, took notes, and changed her routine.

That’s exactly what learning looks like and probably a far healthier response than turning somebody else’s knowledge gap into entertainment.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These Redditors recommended rotating bras to reduce wear, moisture, and frequent washing.

silverokapi − Alternate wearing bras. Not just for hygiene, but it allows the fabric to relax.

This helps the fibers last longer and improves the life of the bra. I have three I alternate and I generally wash every two weeks.

InevitableArcher6582 − As someone who is 56, I’ve always read about them being in rotation.

Like wear the pink one on Monday, red on Tuesday, blue on Wednesday then back to pink one form Monday.

That way they will have less wear and tear from wearing a few days in a row. And if there is any moisture on it from wear, it will dry...

Calm_Grocery_7394 − Women’s secret. Haha I have a few bras on rotation at any one time, colours for what I’m wearing on the day.

I only wash them after a single use if it’s a hot day and I sweat.

Between washes I have an antibacterial clothing spray which I do a little zhuzh to freshen up. Normally 2-3 wears.

This commenter jokingly realized the discussion was a reminder to finally wash their bra

Treasures_Wonderland − Oh sh*t I need to wash my bra.

This group preferred a fresh bra every day because of sweat, heat, or skin concerns

ewwnope − Am i the only one who changes it everyday? 😭 Well I'm busty and also get sweaty so it seems fair.

Also got a fungal infection under the girlies so I'm paranoid that if i don't change my bra every day/after workout then it'll be back

Apprehensive-Ad4244 − I live in the tropics and I wear a fresh bra every day

These commenters said wearing a bra for two or three days before washing is perfectly normal

Independent_Site491 − I wear mine for like 2-3 days before I wash it.

Ok-Vacation-8109 − When I was younger I was the same. Now mid 30s I wear them about 2 days before washing. You’re not being dirty or gross.

These users washed bras far less often when they stayed dry, odor-free, and were only worn briefly

questforstarfish − I only have one bra I actually like. I wear it 1-2 weeks before washing.

I rarely sweat, it does not smell (and I'm quite sensitive to smell, even my own BO smell). I do not care if this is wrong lol, it works for...

Silk-fire − I work from home and only wear bras for literally like a few hours a week.

With the exception of my sports bras for the gym that get washed every single wear, I have probably gone a month without washing mine

😂 if they pass the sniff test, I’m not degrading them by extra washing!

So, where does everyone land, fresh bra every morning, a rotating lineup, or the legendary sniff test? And how many people quietly realized their favorite bra is overdue for laundry?
