Man Picks Up $70 Worth of Pizza, Hits “No Tip,” and Watches the Employee’s Attitude Flip

Tipping used to feel like a reward for good service, but these days, even picking up food can come with an expectation to add another sizable amount to the bill. For some customers, that pressure has become more irritating than the service itself.

The OP agreed to try a new pizza restaurant after his wife called and suggested it for dinner. When he arrived, the employee was initially friendly and found the order under his wife’s name. There was one problem: the restaurant had prepared two pizzas and two salads instead of the smaller order he expected, bringing the bill to $70.50.

Then the payment screen appeared with suggested tips of 20, 25, and 30 percent. The OP chose no tip, but the employee’s friendly attitude disappeared immediately. What happened next convinced the OP that he would not be returning. Read on to see why!

He picked up his own dinner, pressed “No tip,” and suddenly felt like the rude one

'I’m just done'

My wife called me on Friday afternoon at work and told me she and my son wanted to try a new pizza place that opened near us about two months...

No problem, I like pizza. She tells me they only have 12 inch pizzas. Again, no problem. Tell her to get me a pepperoni and a ceasar salad.

I leave work a bit later and stop to get the food on my way home.

I walk in and the guy was as nice as can be. I tell him my wife called in an order and give him her name.

He checks the system and says ‘here it is, two pepperoni pizzas and two ceasar salads’.

He then rings it is and says, ‘that will be $70.50’. I am in shock but this is the neighborhood we live in.

I take out my card and tap it and I am hot with 20, 25, 30, and No tip options. I hit no tip. This guys face just dropped and...

I said thank you and told him to have a good evening. He just walked away without saying a word.

I’m not giving you $15+ dollars for absolutely nothing. GTFOOH with that nonsense.

I came home and told my wife that this is the first and last time we are ordering from here. I’m done with this garbage.

There is something uniquely irritating about being asked to pay extra for a service that has not actually been provided. A tip is supposed to recognize good service, but when a customer is simply picking up food they already ordered and paid for, an aggressive-looking tip screen can make the interaction feel less like gratitude and more like an expectation.

The OP’s frustration began before the tip screen even appeared. He expected one pizza and one salad, yet the restaurant had two of each, doubling the bill to $70.50. He paid for the mistake without creating a confrontation, then encountered tip options ranging from 20% to 30% alongside a “no tip” button.

Choosing zero was a reasonable decision from his perspective. What bothered him most was not being asked. It was the employee’s immediate change in demeanor after seeing the selection. The OP had already paid for the food and was simply taking it home.

There is another perspective, however. The employee may not have personally created the tipping system or even realized how uncomfortable his reaction looked.

Workers in food service can become accustomed to seeing tips as an important part of their compensation, particularly in environments where digital payment systems present tipping prompts automatically.

A disappointed facial expression may have been spontaneous rather than an intentional attempt to shame the customer. That distinction matters because the customer’s experience can still be unpleasant without assuming deliberate manipulation.

Hospitality researchers have examined how perceived fairness influences reactions to service encounters. A study in the International Journal of Hospitality Management found that customers evaluate service recovery partly through whether they believe the outcome and treatment were fair.

The same principle applies to tipping interactions: when customers perceive an additional payment as disconnected from the service they received, frustration can rise quickly.

Psychologist and researcher Daniel Kahneman‘s work on decision-making also helps explain why unexpected charges can feel disproportionately irritating.

People tend to react strongly when a choice is presented in a way that makes a previously optional cost feel socially expected. His research on framing demonstrates that the way a choice is presented can influence how people perceive the same underlying outcome.

That is important here because the OP wasn’t refusing to compensate someone who had provided personal service. He was declining an additional payment during a takeaway transaction.

There is nothing inherently wrong with selecting zero in that situation. If the restaurant wants to include a service charge, it can disclose one clearly in the price rather than relying on social pressure at the payment terminal.

At the same time, the employee’s reaction shouldn’t necessarily become the entire restaurant’s character. The OP had one awkward interaction with one worker. The employee could have been tired, embarrassed about the order mistake, or simply disappointed. None of those possibilities excuses rudeness, but they leave room for a less hostile interpretation.

The more substantive issue is whether the restaurant consistently creates an uncomfortable payment experience. If every pickup involves an expectation of a substantial tip despite no additional service, then the OP has a legitimate reason to take his business elsewhere. If this was one employee’s poor reaction, the restaurant may not deserve to be written off entirely.

Either way, customers should be able to choose “no tip” without being treated as though they have committed a moral offense. Gratitude is meaningful precisely because it is voluntary.

Once a tip becomes something people feel compelled to pay simply to avoid an awkward interaction, it stops feeling like appreciation and starts feeling like a surcharge with emotional pressure attached.

The OP may have been finished with that restaurant, but the broader lesson is worth keeping: a payment screen can ask for generosity. It should never make generosity feel mandatory.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These Redditors questioned why customers should tip for pickup orders and felt the expectation had become excessive

westport116 − Yeah, no. Tip for what? Plus the disrespect of expecting tip and changing one’s demeanour when it wasn’t received.

[Reddit User] − They want a tip for what exactly?

MuchDevelopment7084 − Tipping on a pickup order is a no go for me too. That's just nuts.

Acrobatic-Expert-507 − Just picked up a deep dish from Giodanos - 18/20/22. For carry out.

They can GTFO with that. Lady at the counter wasn’t happy. Oh f__king well.

Chance-Kangaroo4088 − One of the major reasons I get take out, aside from not having to be in public around people, is to avoid the 20% tip. So f__k that...

These commenters argued that creating a welcoming experience and retaining customers matters more than pressuring them for gratuities

dave65gto − I turned off the tip feature on my cc machine. I have a tip jar if someone wants to leave cash.

I want to give people another reason to return, not a reason not to.

Poster25000 − let the owner know they have lost future business because of this.

These Redditors felt rising prices, tip prompts, and poor attitudes are causing customers to reconsider eating out

AffectionateGate4584 − More and more people are just done.

Wonderful_Highway629 − I would write a review that you got attitude when you didn’t tip for takeout and say you’re never going back.

SunBusiness8291 − We have all been hit with a restaurant sledgehammer: menu prices, tips, and attitude.

Should customers tip when they pick up their own pizza, or should restaurants simply price the labor into the menu and retire the awkward stare-down?
