Mom Shares Her Son’s Birthday Date, Then SIL Moves Her Baby Shower Onto It Anyway

Some family scheduling conflicts are unavoidable, especially when several people have busy lives. But when one celebration repeatedly ends up competing with another, it is natural to start wondering whether the issue is simply bad timing or something more deliberate.

The OP is preparing to celebrate her child’s first birthday and had already shared the date with her brother and SIL so they could plan their own upcoming baby shower.

They initially picked a date three weeks earlier, but later announced that they had moved the shower to the same day as the birthday. The OP reminded them of the conflict and explained that changing the birthday party was not possible, yet they still refused to move their event and instead scheduled it for earlier in the day.

This brought back memories of her baby shower, which had also been overshadowed by a family event planned for the same date. Now she is trying to decide whether her hurt feelings are justified or whether she is reading too much into the repeated overlap. Scroll down to see what Reddit thinks.

After two major celebrations collided with her SIL’s plans, one mom began questioning whether coincidence still explained it

'AIO? SIL keeps planning events on the same day as me?'

I have a child that is turning 1. Last year when I was pregnant I sent out invites 2 month early to my baby shower.

2 weeks before, SIL (gf at the time to my brother) decided to throw a surprise party for my brother on the same day.

I reminded her of this, but due to his work schedule, that day was the only day that worked.

She scheduled it for 30 min after the baby showered ended.

I did not get to go due to cleaning up and hated that I missed it, but also that my day was shared.

Fast forward to 1.5 months ago, my brother and SIL are now expecting.

They asked me when my child’s 1st birthday party will be and I gave them the date.

They planned their baby shower for 3 weeks prior for the birthday party.

Then today, my brother texts the family chat saying they moved it to the same date as my child’s birthday party.

I remind him of this and am met with resistance. I am unable to move the party date due to other commitments and ask him to change the day.

They refuse, and instead make their shower for earlier in the day. I’m hurt that this is happening again.

This is my first and only child and they are the only living grandchild in our family.

I feel like they are taking away from my child and putting them on the back burner. AIO or are these frustrations justified?. Edit for more context:

For context, my baby shower was held at a church. We had to have everything cleaned up and locked up by 7:30, party ended at 7.

My husband and I actually live 1.5 hours away from everyone,

but planned both the baby shower and birthday party in our hometown so it was more accessible for everyone.

My brother asked for the date of the party in advance so they could plan their baby shower.

They just changed it because now his wife has to attend a wedding shower on the original date and the day of the birthday party

is the only “other date everyone is available” despite her having like a 3 month window

to throw a baby shower AND already knowing their nephew’s first birthday party is that day.

Other important context: she has 3 nieces and 2 nephews.

They do EVERYTHING for those kids, as far as keeping the 3 girls (ages 2, 4, & 5) for 2 weeks and buying them everything they want and need.

To me, it hurts because I see a lack of effort and potential intention to overshadow my child’s celebrations.

It hurts more because I would never do that to them and they have never done anything like that to her nieces/nephews.

At this point, I’m over it. I will attend their shower and still have the birthday party.

The only thing I did differently this time was make sure my son’s party was in the evening since for my baby shower,

where she planned my brother’s surprise party afterwards, our family left early to attend that.

Not to mention, I had an 1.5 hour drive home afterwards while 8 months pregnant.

A child’s milestone can feel especially precious when it is the first time a family gathers to celebrate them. That is why the OP’s frustration makes sense here. The issue is not simply that two events happen to share a date. It is the repeated pattern, the advance notice, and the fact that the OP has already experienced having an important family celebration overshadowed by the same people.

The first incident could reasonably be dismissed as an unfortunate scheduling conflict. The brother’s work schedule apparently made that particular day the only viable option, and the surprise party began only 30 minutes after the baby shower. The OP still had to clean up and drive home while heavily pregnant, while relatives left early for the other event.

That understandably left a lasting emotional mark. The second situation is harder to dismiss because the brother and SIL specifically asked for the first birthday date so they could plan around it. They then had a three-month window for their shower but moved it onto the birthday because another wedding shower conflicted with their original choice.

There is a fresh psychological angle here: repeated boundary violations can make the second incident feel much larger than the first. The OP isn’t responding only to today’s calendar.

The earlier disappointment has become part of the meaning of the new event. Psychologically, people tend to become especially sensitive when a current situation resembles an earlier experience in which they felt overlooked or displaced. That doesn’t prove malicious intent, but it explains why “it’s just a scheduling conflict” would probably feel dismissive.

Family psychologist John Gottman has emphasized the importance of recognizing what he calls a partner’s or family member’s “bids” for connection, meaning small attempts to communicate that something matters emotionally.

His research suggests that relationships become stronger when those signals are noticed and responded to rather than brushed aside. The Gottman Institute explains that responding to these bids helps build trust and emotional connection.

That idea applies surprisingly well here. The OP explicitly told her brother that the date mattered and explained why moving the shower would hurt. At that point, even if he disagreed about the severity, he knew the emotional significance. Choosing the same date anyway means he was making the decision with that information available.

However, there is an important distinction between impact and intent. The available information supports saying that the OP has been inconsiderately treated. It doesn’t establish that the SIL deliberately wants to overshadow her nephew.

She may genuinely be trying to find a date that works for a large group and may see an earlier-in-the-day shower as sufficiently separate from an evening birthday party.

Her extensive involvement with her other nieces and nephews could make the contrast feel even sharper to the OP, but it still doesn’t prove that she is intentionally treating this child as less important.

The OP’s decision to stop fighting over the date is probably the healthiest part of the update. She isn’t canceling her son’s birthday, moving it around, or allowing the shower to dictate the celebration. She is keeping the birthday party in the evening and letting the other event exist earlier in the day.

That is a meaningful boundary. She doesn’t need their permission to make her son’s birthday special.

If relatives choose to leave the birthday early again, that will be their decision. The OP can still give her child the celebration she planned instead of spending the entire day monitoring whether someone else is receiving more attention.

Her frustration is justified. What she probably shouldn’t do is let the suspicion of intentional sabotage consume the milestone itself. The birthday is still hers to celebrate, regardless of what happens in the neighboring event. And this time, she has already decided not to let someone else’s scheduling choice take the entire occasion away from her.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These commenters suspected the repeated date conflicts were deliberate attempts to undermine or overshadow OP’s family events

Fun-Yellow-6576 − They’re doing it on purpose.

PearlScarletPiccola − Sounds like someone hates not having the attention and she’s willing to be n__ty and hateful to get it.

I have nothing constructive to say, every solution I have would cut off the entire family. Sorry you signed yourself into that without knowing, good luck.

Green_Plan4291 − NOT overreacting. She’s doing it on purpose. What an AH.

Beautiful-Paper2029 − Cancel the birthday party and move it to the next week.

If the shower is moved to that day, then you know it is on purpose and need to figure how to handle the situation with SIL.

These Redditors advised OP to keep future plans private and limit the information available to relatives who repeatedly cause conflicts

Level_Amphibian_6249 − Stop giving them dates so far in advance. If you do, give them the wrong one.

Prior_Benefit8453 − Send as a group family text maybe? “Dear brother, Since I can’t rely on you to schedule events on different dates as mine,

I’m no longer sharing my dates with you. At the same time, I’m asking family not to share my dates with you either. “I realize this doesn’t seem fair.

But it’s not fair that you’ve scheduled TWO important events to me and my family, on the same day.

“I’d rather negotiate with you to come to an understanding that we won’t ever do that to each other again.

But if that’s not possible, I’m no longer sharing important baby showers, birthdays or any other important family event with you.”

Granted this is going to escalate the issue. But I think you ought to make it clear that it’s not right.

If your family disagrees, then only invite those that are supportive of you.

If you decide to do something like the above or similar, maybe talk to a trusted family member before you do it.

Frankly I’m surprised your mother hasn’t or other family members haven’t stepped in to nix this horrid behavior.

[Reddit User] − Stop telling them days, so inviting them. Grey rock the s__t out of those asshats.

Severe-Lecture-7672 − Do not change your plans to accommodate them, nor should you participate in their activities.

These commenters suggested scheduling an unrelated family event to see whether the same pattern occurs again

Queen-Pierogi-V − OP I believe I would do an experiment. Next holiday is Labor Day. Schedule a BBQ and see what happens.

You aren’t really going to have one, but see if they schedule something.

Then you could do something else: if there is a sibling or parent birthday coming up (regardless of the age)

schedule a surprise birthday party and see what happens; you could schedule an old fashioned Sunday family dinner;

schedule a Saturday night make your favorite pizza party or maybe schedule a Halloween party.

You cancel the Labor Day bbq, regardless what they do, but schedule something else kind of unique that your family never or rarely does and see what they do.

Don’t make it too close (on either side) of her delivery date, but make it low key, and family related.

Maybe your shower and baby’s birthday party were just coincidental, but a random, uncommon gathering,

if scheduled over, will prove she is just trying to out do you or exclude you.

It may be petty, but if you really want to know what’s going on, it is a good way to find out. I truly doubt you’d get an honest answer...

If it is intentional then SIL will lie and your brother could be either oblivious or overly protective of his wife.

Sweaty_Jicama1564 − Do you live far? Could be intentional in the sense that someone in the fam is thinking they’re k__ling

two birds with one stone, not necessarily your SIL. Thats me being glass half full

Was keeping the birthday unchanged the fairest response? Does scheduling the shower earlier solve the problem, or merely divide the family again? And after two collisions, would anyone still share important dates in advance? Drop the family-calendar verdict below.
