Husband Catches His Wife Planning an Affair With Her Boss, Then Wonders If 14 Years of Marriage Can Survive It

Infidelity can turn a stable marriage into something that suddenly feels unfamiliar.

Even when the person who cheated seems remorseful and committed to repairing the damage, trust does not necessarily return as quickly as the apologies do.

One husband is struggling with that after discovering his wife of 14 years was having an emotional and physical affair with her boss.

The relationship had not fully crossed every line yet, but the messages were intimate, plans had already been made, and she had even prepared for a future encounter.

Since being caught, she has said and done many of the things he hoped for, yet six weeks later the pain has barely eased.

He still loves her deeply and does not want to lose daily life with their three children.

Scroll down to see why he is questioning whether staying is hope or simply fear of what separation would cost.

'Should I Leave My Wife?'

My wife (39F) and I (35M) have been married for 14 years. We have three

kids together. Everything was great. We have a great house in a great area, great jobs, I could go on and on.

This summer I caught her having an affair with her boss. It was both

emotional and physical, although they hadn’t “gone all the way” yet - but

were in the process of planning to meet up over the summer to go all the

way. She had bought some lingerie for him for the eventual “meeting”.

They texting each other hundreds of times every day and most of it was graphically intimate in nature.

Both she and her boss are under contract, so she either has to work for him or is out of a job for a year.

This is the first time something like this has happened. And since I caught

her, she has done and said all the right things. I love her so much and don’t

want to lose her. But also, it’s been about a month and a half since I found

out but neither the pain nor sadness is getting better.

I also don’t want to miss out on part of my kids lives if we separate. This is a

really big thing for me. The kids are 13, 9, and 6.. I don’t want to leave her, but can’t help and wonder if I should?

Sometimes the most painful betrayal is not losing the person someone loves, but losing the version of the relationship they thought was real.

For the OP, fourteen years of marriage, three children, a home, and an apparently stable life suddenly look different after discovering his wife’s affair.

Six weeks may sound like enough time to outsiders to make a decision.

Emotionally, however, it is barely any time at all when someone’s understanding of their marriage has just been overturned.

His conflict is therefore bigger than “stay or leave.”

He still loves his wife, sees that she appears remorseful, and understandably fears losing everyday life with his children.

At the same time, hundreds of intimate messages, physical involvement, lingerie, and plans to take the affair further demonstrate sustained choices rather than one impulsive moment.

Complicating everything, she remains professionally connected to the man involved.

Even if nothing further happens, that reality can keep uncertainty painfully close.

A different perspective is that the OP may be asking himself for a permanent answer too early.

People often treat discovering infidelity as a crossroads requiring an immediate choice between forgiveness and divorce.

There is another possibility: deciding not to decide yet.

Staying temporarily while assessing whether trust can genuinely be rebuilt is not the same as excusing the affair.

Likewise, considering separation does not mean he values his family less.

Trust is not restored because the unfaithful partner begins saying the right things.

Six weeks of pain therefore does not prove the marriage is doomed. It may simply mean that the injury remains extremely fresh.

The children deserve consideration, but they should not become the only reason he stays.

A healthier question is whether the adults can eventually create a marriage worth remaining in, rather than merely preserving its structure out of fear.

For now, he can postpone the irreversible decision, seek professional couples support, establish clear boundaries around the boss, and watch whether his wife’s actions consistently match her promises.

Reconciliation is possible, but he does not owe anyone a deadline for deciding whether it is possible for him.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These Redditors argued that reconciliation is impossible while she remains in daily contact with her affair partner at work

tbright1965 − Probably an valid exit clause since he is the boss. If you really

want to recover your marriage, the job as it currently is has to go. No

contact with affair partners is rule #1. Contact is like smoldering embers

that have a high risk of catching fire again. If you really want to save this, no contact is step one.

There is no saving this as long as contact continues.

SnooJokes8460 − You have nothing to work with if he is still her boss. Can’t

even begin a conversation if she is seeing him daily.

Top-Rip-6731 − If she truly wants to reconcile she needs to quit her job

immediately and go no contact, open phone policy and life 360. You will

never regain trust as long as she’s working with him. Otherwise you could

go to HR and report the relationship and have him fired if possible. Updateme

clearheaded01 − Inform HR of the affair. Mention 'grooming' and 'manager

exploiting employee' and they will. act instantly. And be aware, that as long

as they still. work. together, the affair is still on IF he has a spouse, inform

her NOW. ... OP. .. only reason she didn't go all the way (how do you know ow this? ? And does it matter? ?) is because she was caught.

.. unless she has true remorse, this cannot be salvaged. .. and IF she has

true remorse, her quitting the job. shouldnt be an issue - if she mentions to

HR that the boss pressured her into an affair, there will be no repercussions

for her. .. Also. .. inform her parents of the affair. ..

Staying for the kids AND your wife still working with this guy, will. more-or-

less mean you have to accept the affair continues (because it WILL as long

as they still see eachother) for the duration of her employment. Also: if she

(or you! !) inform HR of the affair, the will AT LEAST reassign her away from the boss. .. OP.

. this reluctance for her to quit the job is BS. ... and you know it - she wants

to save the marriage? ? Then she quits the job AND inform HR of the affair.

.. Also. .. the kids will know. .. one way or the other, they will feel the

tension and resentment. .. NEVER stay for the kids, they deserve better than growing up.

in a broke home - better to split from your wife and give them the example

they need re: handling g betrayal. .. OP. .. there NEEDS to be consequenses

for her - if she's not prepared to suffer them, then she has no remorse. ...

STOP keeping her dirty secret - inform relevant parties (inlaws! !) of the

ongoing (! ) affair. .. And get STD tested - doubtful they haven't had some form.

of s__ already. ..

These commenters stressed that the prolonged deception makes rebuilding trust exceptionally difficult

Impressive-Peak-6596 − Those feelings you have are unlikely ever to

change. The pain and sadness will follow you around and you’ll constantly

be looking over your shoulder. This seems like a pretty deep and detailed

affair, not a one night one off. How can you be sure that the relationship is

suddenly above board and she’s just not better at hiding it?

Cheaters always do and say the right things in the moment, and it can be

really confusing. The bottom line is this though, if your wife loved you and

valued you on a basic level, she wouldn’t be having a graphic, intimate

affair with her boss. That’s just my opinion. She had no problem doing this knowing it could nuke the family.

Wifeis421A − Nobody can tell you what to do. But knowing that the only

reason it stopped was because they got caught would make it impossible

for me to trust again. Especially if there were no signs. Which means she is

very deceptive. I personally couldn’t do it but I know how hard it would be because of how much you love your kids.

persistent_issues − She’s done and said all the right things? OP, that’s only

because she got caught. If she were capable of being a good wife, she

would have said and done all the right things from the beginning including

being faithful. As for this “contract. ” F__k that.

You need to contact whomever it is that required that contract (the people

to whom her boss answers) and let them know how he “supervises” his

underlings. If there are no people above him, then you need to pursue legal action against him. The contract should be nullified.

More to the point, it could be reasonably argued that the boss is using the

contract to force romantic involvement. Threaten to take that to the courts

and watch how fast that contract gets cancelled and a settlement issued.

dylan6091 − This isn't a one time mistake. It's preparation, prolonged

deceit, and a developed history of disrespect and disregard for you. Not

sure there's anything to salvage, despite what she may say. What I can say

is, your children will most likely be far happier with divorced parents than

with miserable and/or resentful but still together parents.

These Redditors shared or emphasized how infidelity can permanently damage trust, even after reconciliation

BigBadBootyDaddy10 − Oh, I remember how my wife sent lingerie pictures

to her boss. Fun times (sarcasm). There were no kids, so cutting bait was

easy. From my own personal experience, you can’t really recover from this.

visibiltyzero − It’s the loss of trust that’s hard to bare. I’ve seen

reconciliation be successful but the guilty party has been working their tail

off for the last 8 years, being transparent about all of her whereabouts and

phone usage. The underlying problem is, my buddy to this day, doesn’t 100% trust her and said that he never would.

He went from a faithful, gentle man, to one that has one foot out of the

door, waiting for the other shoe to drop. It’s hard to explain, but he has been fundamentally changed in his nature.

AffectionateTrain504 − Nope, let her go, if she did it once she’ll do it again.

Moh-BA − Take a quick look at the miserable subs Pro reconciliation and

you find out even after years of "successful Reconciliation" which basically

means the other spouse didn't cheat again as they knew of, the feeling of

doubt and intrusive thoughts, the constant fear, and the trigger always

shown, they never go away, they lessen by time but never go away.

The choice is always yours, no body can tells what you have to do, but wight the pros and cons of staying and leaving.

Six weeks is an incredibly short time to expect fourteen years of trust to repair itself.

His wife may genuinely regret the affair and be doing everything possible now, but that doesn’t erase the betrayal or require him to know immediately whether he can forgive it.

Staying solely because he fears losing time with his children could create its own kind of unhappiness, while leaving before he understands what he wants could bring different regrets.

Do you think this marriage deserves more time to heal, or has the betrayal changed too much to rebuild?
