Woman Lets Her Brother Live Rent-Free in Her Condo, Then His Wife Starts Setting Rules for When She Can Visit

Helping family during a hard time can feel like the obvious thing to do, especially when you have the space and means to make life easier for them.

But generosity can become complicated when temporary guests start treating someone else’s property like their permanent home.

One woman ran into that problem after allowing her brother and sister-in-law to live rent-free in a condo she owned near her hometown.

Years later, while going through a divorce, she began flying back regularly and staying there whenever her daughter was with her ex.

She sometimes arrived without much notice and invited old friends over to relax, drink, and catch up.

Her sister-in-law eventually complained, asking for a week’s notice and limits on how often guests could visit.

Scroll down to see why the owner’s response turned a family favor into a much bigger argument.

A condo owner clashes with her brother and SIL after they try to set rules for her visits

not the actual photo

'AITA for telling SIL she has no say of when I use my house where she also lives?'

My siblings and I inherited money from our grandfather when he passed

away. Our dad was the administrator and he was not super strict and let us have access to it for practical things.

I convinced my dad to let me have some if it early to buy a condo. It was a 3

bedroom/ 2 bath and the price was amazing and very close to the

university. After I bought it my 2 best friends moved in with me and paid

rent and we lived there till we graduated grad school. I ended up getting

married and moved away. I have rented it on/off and family has lived there as well while attending university.

I have 3 full siblings and 2 blew through the money in a few years and made

very poor decisions. When Covid happened my brother and SIL went

through some very hard times. They asked me if they could move into the

condo until they could get back on their feet and save money. I agreed but

told them my rules the master bedroom was mine and I could show up at

anytime. I did not want to get any emails from the HOA we were good.

I am now getting divorced and share 50/50 custody with my ex. I have the

option of working remotely or going into the office. 1 week a month when

my daughter is with her dad I have been flying back home and staying at

the condo. I have felt a strong desire to be with my friends and want to spend more time with family.

Here is where the issue is. I sometimes drop in last minute. On a whim I

catch a direct flight back home and just show up. This has started annoying

my SIL. She gets even more upset when I invite my friends over and we are

drinking in the living room and acting like college kids again.

It came to a head last weekend where she confronted me about how

inconsiderate I was. She said it was rude not to give notice of when I was

showing up and asked that I let her know a week in advance. She also said

that she did not want my friends hanging out more than once a week and

needed to be gone by 11 pm. Here is where I might be the a__hole. At first I

laughed and then I got mad. I ripped into her and asked her who the f__k

she thought she was. I reminded her that I was the owner of the condo and

she had absolutely no authority to be laying out rules especially when she

was not paying for s__t. I told her if she ever came at me like that again I

would toss her out on her ass and if my brother felt the same way he could leave with her.

My brother confronted me and told me that yes the place was mine and

they were guests but as a courtesy could I give them some notice and

having my friends over was also inconsiderate without notice. I told him no

and no and he called me an a__hole. My friends and I are not loud. SIL is

very religious and is upset because we drink and have very adult

conversations that offends her. So reddit judge me AITA?

Edit for info : Brother and SIL do not pay any of the bills. They are in my

name. They have lived in the condo since April/2020. I would have to serve

them with a notice to vacate if they refused to leave on their own.

Sometimes generosity creates its own emotional trap.

Someone offers help during a crisis, everyone understands that the arrangement is temporary, and then years pass until the favor starts feeling like ordinary life.

That seems to be what happened here. The OP still sees the condo as her property and personal space.

Her brother and SIL, after living there since 2020, appear to experience it as their home.

Both perspectives are emotionally understandable, but they collide badly when nobody has clearly renegotiated the arrangement.

The OP’s anger makes sense because she feels her generosity is being rewritten as an obligation.

She pays the bills, owns the condo, and originally kept the master bedroom for herself with the explicit understanding that she could return whenever she wanted.

From her perspective, being told when she may visit her own property probably felt absurd.

At the same time, the SIL’s request for notice is not completely irrational.

After several years, sudden arrivals, drinking with friends, and late-night socializing can disrupt the privacy people naturally begin attaching to a place where they sleep every night.

That is the more interesting psychological tension here: ownership and psychological territory are not identical.

The OP legally owns the condo, but her brother and SIL have developed routines, expectations, and a sense of privacy there.

The SIL may experience unexpected arrivals as invasions of the space she has psychologically adopted as home.

The OP, meanwhile, may experience rules imposed by someone living there rent-free as an invasion of her authority over property she bought and continues to support.

The conflict is therefore not merely about alcohol, visitors, or an 11 p.m. cutoff.

It is about two incompatible understandings of whose home this has become.

The OP probably went too far when she laughed, cursed at her SIL, and threatened immediate removal during the argument.

But that does not mean the SIL gets to dictate household rules unilaterally.

Guidance on multigenerational living similarly emphasizes that the primary homeowner can establish rules while everyone sharing the space deserves clear, respectful expectations around privacy, guests, and common areas.

After four years, the original casual arrangement has outlived its usefulness.

The healthiest solution is not another argument about who has more rights.

It is a written reset: reasonable notice when practical, clearly defined guest expectations, privacy boundaries, and perhaps a realistic timeline for the brother and SIL to establish their own home.

Generosity works best when everyone remembers that kindness and boundaries can exist at the same time.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These commenters agreed that advance notice is a basic courtesy when the condo is currently someone’s home

MoyamoyaWarrior − Esh I think it's reasonable to ask for a day or two

notice of you coming rather than just walking in, but a week is a bit much.

And you don't need to ask permission for people to come over but maybe

just tell them hey my friends will be here tonight since it's shared Living space rn, favor or not for them.

She's TA for demanding it all AND trying to say friends can't come at all .

_SeleNyx_ − ESH yes they’re not paying anything but for decency’s sake you

could tell them a couple of days or whenever you know that you’re coming

over and having guests. A week is a bit much maybe, but it’s not like they’re asking for veto power, just a heads up.

As for the guests, you say in one paragraph that you act like college kids

and the next that you’re quiet. Which is it? If it’s a week day then I think the

request to tone it down after a certain hour is fair.

All in all it just seems like you’re on a bit of a power trip and your SIL is

stressed about the situation and demanding things past reason. I think

maybe if you all calm down and sit down and have a real talk with empathy this could be resolved fairly easily.

TwoCentsPsychologist − Normally, I would say N-T-A. But you have to catch

a flight. There is NO reason you can't have the courtesy of telling them

"going home" before opening the door with "surprise" ! ! SIL expectations

are both a) ridiculous and b) against the pre-discussed terms. Therefore, ESH except the brother.

OneMikeNation − ESH besides your brother because from what you wrote

he said sounded like he attempted to be civil. Yes your sister can't make

demands in your house but honestly there's a difference between last

minute dropping by if you lived in the same town. But you have to buy a ticket get to the air port get on a plane and land.

And you don't think at any time you can text your brother hey I'm coming

by. While before it didn't occur to you that it bothered them but now that

you do it sounds like your purposely trying yo be an AH.

crawling-alreadygirl − YTA. Yes, you're letting them live there for free, but

they still live there. I think it's reasonable for them to have some

foreknowledge of who's going to be coming in and out of (what is for the time being) their home.

These Redditors backed the owner’s right to visit freely because the arrangement was clearly established from the beginning

antiquity_queen − ESH. You're all the AH. You basically own the place but

are allowing someone to live there as their HOME & you're pissed because

they'd like some basic things like your friends not being over past 11 - I'm

assuming since you said a week this is happening during work days. If I am wrong, please correct me.

Your SIL is the AH as is your brother b/c they are living rent free and you

told them from the beginning you would be coming at random times with

no warning. This is something you said from the beginning and they knew

about it so it is pretty aggravating to have them be pissy about it now.

Solutions: A) start charging rent and make it their actual home & stop

dropping in or B) ask them to leave since you made it clear it is your condo

or C) have some courtesy and don't have people over so late and act like you're all still in college. You aren't.

I can't get behind the whole giving them notice thing b/c you did tell them from the beginning

MandeeLess − NTA. You told them upfront that you planned on showing up

whenever. If they can’t deal with that, then they can go pay rent on a place

and have full control over it. Literal beggars cannot be choosers.

This group criticized the owner for treating the condo like a private crash pad while others are living there

Meerkatable − YTA. Yeah, you’re doing them a favor but they’re also living

there. Her requests were reasonable - she just wants a heads up about

when you’re coming and for your guests to not stay over really late. You

completely overreacted and got really controlling.

Even if you thought she was asking too much, you could have offered a

compromise instead of just going for the jugular like you did.

Computer_Diligent − I feel like OP likes surprise visits so SIL will be

reminded that she’s living there for free and so that OP will feel superior over her and her brother.

There’s no reason not to give them at least a couple of days, or at least a

few hours notice and I highly doubt OP is quiet if they act like college kids late at night.

Wehaveafangirl − I kinda feel like YTA. It may be your house, but you are

willingly letting your brother and sil live there, and I think they have a right

to feel comfortable in their living space. It wouldn't hurt to be courteous, ie

warning them when you're catching a flight home or considering them when you invite friends over.

If you're upset about your sil trying to dictate how you use your house, you

could easily fix the problem. If you want to use your house as freely as you

want, don't offer it to other people. If you want to help your brother and sil

out, be respectful of their needs. Hope you guys can resolve this ♡

These commenters defended the owner, arguing that rent-free housing comes with fewer grounds for demanding additional privileges

B4pangea − NTA. This is a Choosing Beggars situation.

sighcantthinkofaname − NTA I mean it would be nice to give her a heads

up, but i'm of the belief that if someone is letting you stay somewhere

rent-free you have no right to complain about this stuff. If she wants more

privacy she can start paying rent somewhere.

The condo may legally belong to her, but after years of letting her brother and SIL live there, it has also become their home in a practical sense.

That does not give them authority to dictate how she uses her own property, especially while paying nothing, but asking for basic notice before overnight visits is not entirely unreasonable either.

The real problem is that everyone is operating under different expectations.

Do you think she should keep exercising full owner privileges, or establish clearer house rules so nobody feels blindsided?
