She Was Asked to Be Maid of Honor, Then Blamed for Everything on the Bachelorette Trip

in Social Issues

Being asked to be someone’s Maid of Honor is supposed to mean you are trusted.

For one woman, it initially felt surprising but flattering when her cousin’s fiancée asked her to be one of two Maids of Honor. They had only known each other for about three years and weren’t especially close, but she was happy to step up and help.

The other Maid of Honor had apparently stopped responding to the bride months earlier and didn’t even attend the bachelorette trip.

So this woman ended up doing most of the planning.

She created a PowerPoint itinerary, organized the Airbnb information, collected addresses, mapped out activities, and tried to make sure everyone knew what was happening.

Then, somewhere during the trip, she apparently went from being the person who was organizing everything to the person who was allegedly ruining it.

By the time she returned home, she had quit as Maid of Honor and decided she wasn’t going to attend the wedding.

And she was left wondering how a trip she had spent so much effort organizing had gone so spectacularly wrong.

She Was Asked to Be Maid of Honor, Then Blamed for Everything on the Bachelorette Trip

'AITA for dropping out as Maid of Honor and refusing to attend the wedding after the bachelorette trip?'

My cousin’s fiancée asked me to be one of her two Maids of Honor. I was surprised because I’ve only known her about 3 years and we weren’t extremely close.

The other MOH didn’t attend the bachelorette and apparently hasn’t responded to her in months, so I took on most of the planning.

There were 5 of us: the bride, me, my cousin, and two of the bride’s friends, one of whom is pregnant.

I made a PowerPoint itinerary and shared notes with the Airbnb info, addresses and plans.

The bride originally wanted a boat/beach day and ATVs, but her pregnant friend couldn’t do several activities.

I talked to the bride beforehand and she specifically told me we should pivot if necessary because she had promised her friend’s husband we’d take care of her.

Throughout the trip, I would ask the bride what she wanted to do and she would often tell me to choose.

I thought everything was going well until the last day, when she told me the things I planned seemed like things only I wanted to do.

She also said I had gotten “too close” to her pregnant friend and that this was supposed to be her special trip. Which confused me because I thought I was...

One night, the bride and two girls went to an after-hours club until 5am while I stayed with the pregnant friend. Another time, they went inside a club while I...

The bride also complained that I walked ahead of everyone while souvenir shopping and was always “leading.”

She said she bought us baskets and we didn’t get her anything. Before the trip, I had bought her a $140 pearl/sequin dress specifically for the bachelorette, so that comment...

She then told me the only thing I chose correctly the entire trip was the coffee shop on the last day and accused me of “doing my own thing” afterward.

I had actually left because I desperately needed a bathroom and spent almost an hour walking in the rain trying to find one.

Later, my cousin told her I was “being weird,” and that night they both confronted me about everything I had supposedly done wrong.

I got defensive and said we had all spent money and traveled there to celebrate her, so I didn’t understand what else she wanted from me.

She kept saying she had “tried with me.”. Eventually I told her I was done, dropped out as MOH and said I wouldn’t attend the wedding.

I locked myself in the bathroom and cried while everyone else ate pizza and watched movies. Only one girl checked on me, and it wasn’t the bride, my cousin, or...

I know dropping out during an argument was drastic, and maybe I could’ve handled that part better. But I felt like I couldn’t win. If I took the lead, I...

If I didn’t, I wasn’t planning. I was told to accommodate her pregnant friend, then criticized for being too close to her.. AITA for dropping out of the wedding?

She Thought She Was Following the Bride’s Instructions

There were five people on the bachelorette trip: the bride, the woman posting, her cousin, and two of the bride’s friends.

One of those friends was pregnant.

Originally, the bride wanted a boat and beach day along with ATVs.

But because the pregnant friend couldn’t participate in several of those activities, the poster spoke with the bride beforehand.

According to her, the bride specifically said they should adjust the plans if necessary because she had promised the pregnant woman’s husband that everyone would take care of her.

So that’s what she tried to do.

Throughout the trip, she frequently asked the bride what she wanted to do.

The bride would often tell her to choose.

From the poster’s perspective, she wasn’t trying to take control.

She was trying to fill the role she’d been asked to fill.

Maid of Honor responsibilities commonly include helping organize the bachelorette party, and wedding-planning etiquette guides recommend setting clear expectations between the bride and wedding party to avoid exactly this kind of misunderstanding.

But apparently, the bride had a very different interpretation of what was happening.

Suddenly, She Was Doing Everything Wrong

On the final day, the bride confronted her.

She said the activities the poster had planned seemed like things that only she wanted to do.

The poster was confused.

She had repeatedly asked the bride what she wanted.

She had adjusted the itinerary around the pregnant guest.

She had taken on the planning because the other Maid of Honor wasn’t participating.

Yet now she was being accused of making the trip about herself.

There was another criticism that hurt even more.

The bride said the poster had gotten “too close” to the pregnant friend.

That was particularly confusing because the woman had spent time with her largely because the pregnant guest couldn’t participate in everything.

One night, the bride and two of the other women went to an after-hours club and stayed until 5 a.m.

The poster stayed behind with the pregnant woman.

Another time, the other women went inside a club while she remained outside with her.

So she had believed she was doing exactly what the bride had asked her to do: making sure the pregnant friend was taken care of.

Now that same behavior was apparently being interpreted as stealing attention from the bride.

Even Her Walking Became a Problem

The criticism didn’t stop there.

The bride complained that the poster walked ahead of everyone while they were souvenir shopping.

She also said the poster was constantly “leading.”

Then came another accusation.

The bride said she had bought baskets for everyone and nobody had gotten her anything.

That comment stung.

Before the trip, the poster had purchased a $140 pearl-and-sequin dress specifically for the bride to wear during the bachelorette celebration.

From her perspective, she had absolutely tried to make the bride feel special.

But apparently, the gift wasn’t being counted.

Then the bride told her that the only thing she had chosen correctly during the entire trip was a coffee shop on the final day.

At that point, the poster felt completely defeated.

She couldn’t understand what the bride wanted from her.

If she took initiative, she was controlling.

If she stepped back, she wasn’t planning enough.

If she stayed with the pregnant friend, she was getting too close to someone else.

If she made a decision, it was apparently the wrong decision.

And then there was the incident that made one particular accusation especially frustrating.

She Wasn’t “Doing Her Own Thing”

The bride accused her of leaving afterward and “doing her own thing.”

The truth was considerably less dramatic.

She desperately needed to use the bathroom.

She left and spent almost an hour walking around in the rain trying to find one.

There was no secret side adventure.

No attempt to abandon the group.

Just a woman who urgently needed a restroom.

By this point, however, it seemed as though every ordinary action was being interpreted negatively.

Then her cousin joined the confrontation.

According to the poster, he had told the bride that she was “being weird.”

That night, the two of them confronted her together about everything she had supposedly done wrong.

She became defensive.

She reminded them that everyone had spent money and traveled there to celebrate the bride.

She genuinely didn’t understand what else she was supposed to have done.

The bride kept saying that she had “tried with her.”

Eventually, the poster reached her breaking point.

She said she was done.

She stepped down as Maid of Honor and told them she wouldn’t attend the wedding.

Then she locked herself in the bathroom and cried.

The others ate pizza and watched movies.

Only one person checked on her.

And it wasn’t the bride.

It wasn’t her cousin.

It wasn’t even the pregnant friend she had spent so much of the trip looking after.

Was Quitting the Wedding Too Drastic?

This is the part where the situation becomes more complicated.

Walking away from a wedding party in the middle of an argument is undeniably dramatic.

If the poster had calmly waited until everyone returned home and discussed the situation, the fallout might have been different.

But it’s also difficult to ignore how trapped she felt.

She had been asked to take on a major planning role.

The other Maid of Honor had effectively disappeared.

The bride apparently delegated decisions to her.

Then, after she made those decisions, the bride criticized her for making them.

The Knot similarly recommends that brides clearly communicate what they expect from their Maid of Honor and wedding party because vague expectations can quickly turn into resentment and misunderstandings.

The bride was entitled to want a bachelorette trip that felt like her celebration.

But the people helping organize it also needed to know what she actually wanted.

The poster couldn’t read her mind.

The Pregnant Friend Was an Especially Strange Point of Conflict

The situation involving the pregnant guest may have been the clearest example of the communication breakdown.

The bride apparently told the poster beforehand to accommodate her.

Then, when the poster actually did that, she was criticized for becoming too close to the same woman.

That’s a nearly impossible standard to meet.

The poster didn’t choose the pregnant friend over the bride.

She simply stayed with someone who couldn’t participate in everything while the rest of the group went out.

And yet the bride apparently saw that as evidence that her own Maid of Honor was shifting attention away from her.

A bachelorette party is supposed to celebrate the bride, but modern planning guidance also emphasizes considering the needs, budgets, and circumstances of the entire group.

That doesn’t mean every decision has to accommodate everyone.

It does mean that someone shouldn’t be punished for following instructions they were specifically given.

Then Reddit Noticed Something Else

Reddit had one recurring theory.

The missing Maid of Honor probably didn’t disappear for no reason.

Several commenters pointed out the same detail: the other Maid of Honor had stopped responding to the bride months ago.

She hadn’t simply missed the bachelorette.

She had apparently ghosted her entirely.

That made people wonder whether this woman’s disastrous weekend was actually a glimpse into why the previous Maid of Honor walked away.

One commenter joked that the poster had now solved the mystery.

Others said the bride sounded like someone who wanted complete control while simultaneously refusing to take responsibility for making decisions.

And several commenters thought the poster had been placed in a no-win situation.

If she led, she was controlling.

If she asked the bride to decide, she wasn’t doing enough.

If she stayed with the pregnant friend, she was neglecting the bride.

If she went with everyone else, she would have been abandoning someone she’d been explicitly asked to look after.

Not Everyone Was Completely Blameless

There was one reasonable criticism buried among the overwhelming NTA responses.

We only have one side of the story.

It’s possible the poster was more controlling than she realized.

Maybe the bride had expressed preferences that didn’t make it into the post.

Maybe there were moments when the poster genuinely dominated the group.

And perhaps the $140 dress, while generous, wasn’t the same thing as giving the bride the particular emotional attention she wanted.

That’s worth acknowledging.

But even if the poster made mistakes, the solution should have been a conversation during the trip, not a pile-on at the end.

If the bride felt ignored, she could have said exactly what she wanted.

If she wanted the group to follow her choices, she could have made those choices.

Instead, she apparently told someone else to choose and then criticized her for choosing.

That isn’t a sustainable way to communicate.

Let's dive into the reactions from Reddit:

boolgy_ − I guess you know now why the other MOH ghosted her. That sounds like it sucked, and was very confusing. NTA

Jodenaje − NTA I think we all know why the bride needed to ask you (a woman she barely knows) to be MOH.

She probably didn't have any other friends to ask, because she's selfish and unreasonable. S__ew her. I'd be done with that bratty behavior too.

HummingbirdGecko8415 − And thus the mystery of why the other MOH was never heard from again was solved. NTA

Psych0matt − At least from your side of the story (which I am in no way saying is wrong or inaccurate), NTA. It sounds like she basically said “here, you...

Own_Mention9372 − Nope. I would’ve been done, too. NTA Her other MOH ghosted her for a reason.

pottersquash − Only one girl checked on me, and it wasn’t . ..... the pregnant friend. ooof. NTA. Look, if there were issues she could've took command. Unfair to unload...

Cherry_Blushee − It sounds like you were put in a situation where you could not win. You tried to follow her wishes and still got blamed for everything.

Oncer93 − NTA. Now you know why you were chosen as MOH.

Not because you two were close, but because she couldn't find anybody else to be MOH, and figured that her fiance's cousin would be easy. She's gonna have a hard...

SeattleSunflower7000 − NTA - Can you share your ages? Because she sounds like she's a "mean girl" in high school.

She doesn't sound mature enough to even get married let alone have a successful marriage. And I concur with other posters, now you know why the other MOH ghosted her!

WhizzoButterBoy − Clearly your telepathy wasn't working well enough to cater to the wishes of the selectively mute bride and her friends. NTA. You can go to your cousin's next...

Final Thoughts

The biggest issue here wasn’t one bad bachelorette activity.

It was a breakdown in expectations.

The bride wanted to feel celebrated and in control of her special weekend.

The Maid of Honor believed she had been asked to take charge of the logistics and tried to make the trip work for everyone, including the pregnant guest.

Those two expectations collided.

Could the poster have handled her final decision more calmly? Probably.

But quitting a wedding role after being repeatedly criticized isn’t automatically cruel, especially when the person feels that the role has become an impossible standard they cannot satisfy.

Sometimes a friendship doesn’t end because one person did something unforgivable.

Sometimes it ends because both people realize they have very different ideas about what supporting each other is supposed to look like.

And judging by Reddit’s reaction, a lot of people thought this bride may have been losing her second Maid of Honor for the exact same reason she lost the first one.
