Woman Takes Friend’s “Broken” Keurig, Plugs It In, And Somehow Starts A Friendship Crisis

Sometimes a friendship argument is not really about the object involved, but about what one person thinks a promise means. I think that is why even something as trivial as a discarded coffee machine can suddenly turn into a much bigger conflict about trust.

One 27-year-old woman had an old Keurig she believed was broken and planned to throw away. Her friend hated seeing a nearly new appliance go to waste and asked to take it instead, explaining that someone might still be able to use it for parts or another purpose.

After eventually getting permission, the OP went home, cleaned the machine, and impulsively plugged it in. To everyone’s surprise, it worked perfectly. She immediately offered it back, expecting the discovery to be good news.

Instead, her friend became furious and accused her of lying. Scroll down to see why one working coffee machine caused such a serious fallout.

A woman takes her friend’s “broken” coffee machine, only for a simple test to spark a friendship fight

not the actual photo

'AITAH for plugging in a keurig machine that my friend was throwing out?'

This is very long but I need advice please

For context, my friend (F27) got this keurig machine 2 years ago for Christmas and used it maybe 5-6 times before it just stopped working.

She got a new one and that one sat there forever, I told her I really wanted it if she was going to throw it out

so finally she said she did everything she could and could not get it working so she was going to throw it out.

My initial thought was that the machine is basically brand new and could maybe be put to use by somebody for something or even a part so I asked to...

She continued over and over saying no and that I'm just going to plug it in and try it even after me telling her that

that wasn't my intention and just didn't want it to go to the dump if someone could take it for something,

like what a waste of a perfect condition machine.

So she did eventually say yes and as I was leaving I did say "well I am going to try to plug it in now that you said not to"...

I got home later that night and when I did I started cleaning the inside and the k-cup holder and the back and thought to myself

"hmm I wonder what happens when she plugs it in anyways" so I filled the back up and as soon as I plugged it in it

blinked and lit up and worked PERFECTLY.

I sent her a video and message right away saying it works and a good thing I impulsively tried it because now we know it works and she could have...

She then messaged me the next morning telling me she was so pissed off, that I am a liar and a bullshitter because I plugged it in when I

said I wasn't going to and that I lied when I said I wanted to give it away to someone who could potentially use it for something rather than

more plastic in the dump when that is not true.. like should I have just thrown it out or not told her it actually does work?

She is sending me essays on how bad of a friend I am and how I broke her trust and she is losing her mind and being very mean... so...

I also have apologized many times but she isn't telling me exactly what upset her, she just keeps saying I am a liar and she needs time away

and that I just bullshitted her and as her best friend she never thought I would do something like this to her by plugging in a keurig

machine out of impulse when she kept saying not to.. but it was garbage anyways

Sometimes a tiny object becomes the stand-in for a much bigger issue. On the surface, this argument is about a Keurig that was headed for the trash.

The OP took it home, cleaned it, plugged it in, and discovered that it worked. That should have been a funny ending. Instead, her friend focused entirely on the fact that the OP had said she was not planning to test it, then did exactly that.

The emotional conflict is therefore less about the appliance and more about trust. The friend appears to believe the OP manipulated the conversation to get possession of something she secretly intended to keep or test.

The OP, meanwhile, seems genuinely confused because she viewed the machine as discarded property and even offered to return it once it worked. From her perspective, plugging it in was impulsive and harmless. From the friend’s perspective, it confirmed the exact behavior she had warned about.

There is also a fresh psychological angle here: people can react more strongly to a broken expectation than to the actual consequence. Psychologists often describe trust as relying on predictability, consistency, and whether someone’s words match their actions.

When that alignment breaks, even over something trivial, the emotional reaction can become surprisingly intense because the brain is responding to the perceived dishonesty rather than the practical outcome.

Verywell Mind explains that trust in close relationships depends heavily on reliability and follow-through. Repeatedly saying one thing and doing another can weaken trust because it creates uncertainty about whether future statements can be believed.

Psychology Today similarly notes that trust is often damaged less by the size of an incident than by what the event appears to reveal about someone’s intentions.

That helps explain why the friend may be reacting so strongly, even if the OP sees the situation as absurdly minor. Still, the friend’s response also sounds disproportionate if this was truly an isolated incident.

Calling someone a terrible friend and sending angry essays over a discarded coffee maker suggests there may be older resentment or a larger pattern that the OP is not seeing.

The most useful next step is probably not another apology about the Keurig itself. The OP has already apologized. What matters now is whether the friend can eventually explain what this incident represented to her.

If it was only about plugging in a machine that had been given away, the reaction seems excessive. But if the friend felt manipulated because the OP said one thing and then did the opposite, that part is worth acknowledging clearly.

Sometimes the argument is not about the coffee maker. It is about whether “I won’t do that” still means anything.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These users questioned the friendship and said OP should reconsider keeping someone who talks this way

Personal_Regular_569 − Why are you friends with someone you talks to you this way?

hamo78 − She lied. It was never broken. You called her out on her s__t. Find a new friend

keesouth − It's sounds like she knew that one worked and just wanted a different one. You sending her the picture caught her in the lie.

You're NTA bit your really should have read the room and just kept quiet about it working and enjoyed your free coffee machine.

These commenters thought the friend was embarrassed and overreacted after feeling foolish

throwaway2117000 − NTA. I get she’s embarrassed but that’s an overreaction.

Maybe explain all the cleaning was done so she doesn’t feel like it just needed a different outlet to work.

221b_ee − I think she feels stupid and is taking it out on you.

Seems like she also feels like you are deliberately making her out to be stupid by emphasizing repeatedly how easy it was to 'fix. '

She's overblowing it, AND you're being a bit tactless.

NTA, and you're really not in the wrong here, but probably worth apologizing if you value the friendship.

bloontsmooker − Any chance this is about you being generally pushy?

Maybe share some of the long texts she’s sending you so we can really judge what she’s upset about?

Based on your story, you seem correct, but I highly doubt you’re asking this question if it’s that clear you’re in the right.

You’re 27, you’d know this was totally fine, if it was actually totally fine.

What is her actual complaint?

dumplinglifesaver − Why would she expect you not to plug it in?

These Redditors suspected the argument was about something deeper than the coffee maker.

StillStaringAtTheSky − NTA What in the world is she on about? Who gave her that coffee maker? ??

Apparently she doesn't want the keurig to exist anymore- so Ex bf? ??

Sad-Cap1136 − NTA…What in the actual heck. There has to be more to this because it’s definitely not about the Keurig.

ok-uh-huh-yeah-sure − NTA. Your friend is not well mentally.

Do you think she was embarrassed because the machine worked, or was this argument really about a longer pattern between them? And once someone gives an item away, should they still get a say in what happens to it?
