Mom Tries to Feed Her Crying 3-Month-Old, Then MIL Insists the Baby “Cannot Possibly Be Hungry”

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

New parents already have enough to second-guess without someone repeatedly questioning whether they understand their own baby’s cues.

When that person is also the main source of childcare support, setting boundaries can become especially complicated.

One mother is struggling with that after her three-month-old began feeding more frequently during what appears to be a growth spurt.

Twice in one week, her mother-in-law insisted the crying baby could not possibly be hungry and spent several minutes trying to distract her instead of offering the prepared bottle.

The baby became increasingly distressed, and afterward MIL suggested stretching feeds simply because the formula packaging listed a longer interval.

Now the mother is worried about leaving her alone with the baby at all.

Scroll down to see why an upcoming night of babysitting has turned into a much bigger family conflict.

A new mother grows uneasy when her MIL repeatedly ignores the baby’s hunger cues

Mom Tries to Feed Her Crying 3-Month-Old, Then MIL Insists the Baby “Cannot Possibly Be Hungry”
not the actual photo

'MIL wants me to let baby go hungry?'

Husband and I have a 3 month old baby girl. Shes clearly going through a

growth spurt because we get her weight checked regularly. She takes a

bottle of formula every 3 hours during the day. It is on the larger volume

for her age (6 to 7oz) but she usually finishes it comfortably. She has mild reflux.

Twice this week MIL has been at our place and baby has started crying.

Same exact situation both times. I look at the clock, see it has been almost

3 hours since baby's last feed and start preparing a bottle.

Bottle is ready. I ask "MIL, do you want to feed baby or shall I?". By this point baby has escalated crying.

MIL replies "she cannot possibly be hungry, its not been that long since the

last feed. I bet she has a tummy pain. I bet she is bored." MIL dances baby

around for a good 15 minutes with baby wailing.. By this point baby is too

distraught to even eat without me calming her with her dummy first.

After this happened yesterday MIL's comments were not an apology but

rather "baby should be able to go longer between bottles now, the packet

says three to four hours. Wouldn't four be nicer? Wasnt she going almost

four a few weeks back?". I said babies are not robots and you need to feed them when they are hungry.

Husband asked her to leave abruptly. But when she had gone he said we

wanted to ask a professional this week why our baby is "so hungry all the time" because maybe mil "has a point".

The way she gets into his head infuriated me. Also v sad because I am

dealing with PPD and MIL is the most available person we have to watch

baby for a few hours so I can go to therapy/have some me time etc. She

used to be wonderful with baby in the newborn phase but now whenever I

give advice about baby schedule or cues to her she takes it as an insult ("I DO know how to care for a child, you know")

I guess I am just grieving the idea of unconditional support with baby. I am

also scared of leaving baby with MIL for hours in case she lets her go

hungry. But shes meant to have her on friday night! And I have zero idea

how to have a productive conversation with her!. My hair is already falling

out but this makes me want to rip out even mooooore

Sometimes the most stressful part of caring for a baby is not uncertainty about the baby, but having another adult repeatedly challenge what the parents are observing.

That seems to be the OP’s real frustration. Her daughter cries near her usual feeding time, takes the bottle once calm enough to eat, and is gaining weight appropriately.

Yet instead of treating those observations as useful information, the MIL appears determined to prove that the baby should follow a timetable she prefers.

The medical guidance is actually fairly straightforward.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says that, for most healthy full-term infants, parents should generally respond to hunger cues rather than rigidly follow the clock.

Formula-fed babies commonly eat about every three to four hours, but individual needs vary, and babies should be allowed to regulate how much they take.

The CDC similarly emphasizes responsive feeding and notes that crying is often a late hunger cue.

That makes the MIL’s insistence on stretching a crying three-month-old to four hours especially questionable.

“The packet says three to four hours” describes a typical range, not a rule that a hungry baby must wait until the fourth hour.

If the parents are worried that 6–7 ounces per feed is unusually high or that reflux is affecting feeding, asking the pediatrician is perfectly reasonable.

But that consultation should be about the baby’s individual growth and intake, not about proving the grandmother right.

The AAP specifically recommends discussing consistently high formula intake with a pediatrician rather than guessing.

There is also a deeper conflict here about authority.

The MIL hears guidance from the baby’s mother as criticism of her parenting competence: “I DO know how to care for a child.”

But babysitting someone else’s infant is not a test of whether she successfully raised children decades ago.

The relevant question is whether she can follow these parents’ current instructions.

That matters because trust is essential when someone is providing respite care.

The OP is already dealing with postpartum depression and needs dependable support.

Leaving her daughter with someone while wondering whether that person will deliberately delay feeding could make that respite more stressful rather than restorative.

A productive boundary therefore does not need to become a debate about who understands babies better.

It can be very concrete: when the baby shows her established hunger cues, offer the bottle; do not deliberately stretch feeds to prove she can wait longer; contact the parents if something seems abnormal.

If the MIL cannot agree to that without arguing, Friday-night babysitting probably should not happen yet.

The sad part is that the OP is grieving more than a childcare arrangement. She expected unconditional support and instead discovered that help comes with resistance to her decisions.

But dependable help must make a parent feel safer, not require them to surrender confidence in what they know about their own baby.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These Redditors backed feeding the baby on demand and rejected MIL’s rigid feeding beliefs

nhaines − I said babies are not robots and you need to feed them when

they are hungry. Very sage. Husband asked her to leave abruptly. But when

she had gone he said we wanted to ask a professional this week why our

baby is "so hungry all the time" because maybe mil "has a point". GIGANTIC PROBLEM!

"I DO know how to care for a child, you know" "Not that you've demonstrated to me. "

bopper71 − I always used to feed on demand ebf when mine were babies

but your 3 month old sounds like a dream if you’re getting 3hrly feeds. I

would also recommend having a flea in your hubbys ear! As he needs to get

on board with your program with how well your LO is progressing.

Not entertaining your delusional, outdated mils ideology of what she

thinks should be done! ! Snap him out of it straight away. He needs to back

you up and tell her to back off! ! I would either only leave LO for 3hrs or

cancel her as the sitter and get someone who can listen to instructions that you can trust.

chickens_for_laughs − To OP's husband: I'm a retired nurse who worked in

OB and pediatrics. I'm also a mother and grandmother. Your baby needs to

be fed when she is hungry, not when an adult thinks she should be hungry.

Babies go through growth spurts when they need more food more often.

With my children, it took the form of frequent b__ast feedings, until I got

to the point where I gave them a bottle just to rest my nipples. Your

mother may mean well, but she is not reading what your baby needs now,

and this isn't helpful at all. It's time for you and grandma to back off the unsolicited advice.

The best way to help your wife now is to watch your baby at times so your

wife can get a break and a nap, amd follow your wife's instructions, not your mother's.

readergirl35 − Every 3 to 4 hours is baby's schedule. What is Nana on

about? If baby feeds every 3 hours that is spot on what the carton said.

Also that varies based on lots of things. Growth spurts can increase appetite.

Teething, colds, ear infections and other things can decrease appetite (and

at increase the number of times they feed if they take less at each feed. )

Years ago parents were advised to put baby on a set schedule and never

feed unless it was time to do so. Baby's cried with hunger and went unfed.

Now we know there was absolutely no point to that.

For at least 35 years pediatrician's have advised just to feed baby when

they're hungry. Tell your MIL (and your SO) that you already are following

the doctor's advice for feeding. Tell your SO to come to the doctor's visits

with you so he can ask his questions and be more involved in knowing what's up with baby.

Soft-Reference-8475 − Pediatrician here. Feed baby when hungry. 3

months of age is a KNOWN time of increased intake during growth spurt

These commenters warned that MIL should not be trusted alone with the baby if she withholds food

ApplesandDnanas − My son ate every 2 hours until he just ate food. He’s 28

months now and still sometimes eats every 2 hours. He’s in the 3-4

percentile for hight and weight so he’s not even close to big.

Unfortunately, I don’t think your MIL is a safe person to watch your child.

Luggageisnojoke − Please for the love of everything worldwide do not let this woman watch your child alone.

morelovenow − This would be a giant red flag for me. If MIL wants to

withhold a bottle from a 3 month old baby, imagine the types of problems

you’ll have as your daughter gets older. If I had to guess, your MIL is also

the kind of grandparent that would say stuff like ‘Oh no, I can’t have this

donut/cookie/bagel because I’m watching my figure.

’ Or ‘No, granddaughter, you can’t have another helping of spaghetti

because it will make you chunky. ’ Grandparents causing unhealthy relationships with food is a huge NO for me.

umamimaami − This is giving diet culture… on an infant? ?? What’s wrong

with these people? If she can’t follow feeding or care instructions, she,

sadly, can’t be left alone with the baby. Maybe framing it like that will get a message through her addled skull?

These Redditors criticized the husband for doubting his wife instead of consulting the pediatrician himself

Floating-Cynic − Hey. .. your husband has the same ability to pick up the

phone and call the pediatrician.   Don't let him put you in the position of

alleviating his concerns, he needs to learn how to take care of babies too.

He can join all the new mom forums to ask questions, he can literally do research.    In the meantime,  mother's intuition exists.

I tell all new moms the same thing,  that I don't care if the other person has

had 1 baby or 10, they've never raised your baby, and you know best.

Definitely feed baby before leaving and instead of worrying about a

productive conversation,  just tell her "if you're going to care for baby, I

need to know you aren't going to take my trust for granted. I don't want

baby crying for food. " If she does it anyway,   find other help.

It sucks to not have family support- but the relief that comes from having a sitter that will follow instructions is well worth it.

BackgroundSoup7952 − Let me check the notes here. The formula says

feed every 3-4 hours. Baby is hungry 3 hours after last feed. Are your MIL

and Husband incapable of reading or telling the time? Please bring

husband to next appointment and get the pediatrician to read out the

formula instructions to him. Dear God. I am. sorry you are going through this op.

For what it's worth my dad tells. stories about how I wanted to eat every 2-3 hours during. my first year of life.

These commenters shared experiences showing babies may naturally need smaller, more frequent feeds

BadInevitable9830 − My mother in law told me to let my 4 week old cry it

out so she could figure it out. Lol so after that I recognized she didn’t know

what the f__k she was talking about. With my first born I would feed her

whenever she was hungry. I didn’t keep up with the every 3-4 hour feeds.

Sometimes she needed food more frequently and I wasn’t gonna deprive

her of that because of the 3-4 hour rule…. You’re the mommy & I’m sorry

you don’t have the support from your MIL that you need. Unfortunately

this is more common with MIL. Sending you love and solidarity your way 🧡

bek8228 − She doesn’t get to have an opinion on when your baby eats. You

as the parent decide when to feed her. As hard as it is, you have to be

strong and tell her straight. Practice now because it doesn’t get easier later

on if you let MIL steamroll you now. “She’s hungry now, we won’t be

waiting to feed her.” “I don’t care how long it has been since she last ate. She’s hungry now and

so that means it’s time for her to eat. ” “I don’t care what you did when

your children were babies. This is my baby. ” My kids were both snack feeders as infants.

If they were supposed to drink 5 oz every 4 hours, they’d do 2.5 oz every 2

hours instead. It was tiring and we washed approximately 10 million bottles keeping up with them.

But their pediatricians never cared much about how often they ate or how

much they drank in each session as long as the total amount they were

getting each day was not too much or too little. You know your baby and

you know what she needs. Don’t let MIL convince you otherwise.

The real issue isn’t whether the baby sometimes eats at three hours or four.

It’s whether MIL is willing to follow the parents’ instructions instead of overruling them because she thinks she knows better.

A hungry three-month-old should not have to cry for fifteen minutes while an adult argues with the feeding schedule.

Asking the pediatrician for reassurance is reasonable, but until MIL can respect the baby’s cues and the parents’ decisions, leaving her alone with the baby may create more stress than relief.

Do you think Friday’s babysitting should be cancelled?
