Man Leaves His Work-From-Home Bubble and Gets an Unexpected Lesson From Women on the Train

Sometimes a small change in routine can make someone notice an experience they had never thought much about before. A new commute, different clothes, and suddenly the outside world starts reacting in ways that feel surprisingly uncomfortable.

One Reddit user shared exactly that kind of moment after her husband switched from working at home to commuting into a major city every day. He began dressing more formally for work and soon noticed that women on the train kept staring at him.

Confused and slightly embarrassed by the attention, he brought it up to his wife expecting sympathy. Her response, however, came from years of personal experience and made the whole exchange unexpectedly funny. Scroll down to see why so many readers enjoyed his sudden realization.

A longtime remote worker starts commuting downtown and becomes unsettled by women staring at him on the train

'My husband discovers ogling'

My husband has been a wfh person for the past 10 years where he did travel quite often for work.

He’s an engineer by training so he mostly has worked with nerdy awkward people, more men than women.

He recently switched jobs and has to be in office everyday so now he commutes downtown to a major metropolitan US city from the suburbs via train.

My husband is an attractive guy, more so now that he wears business casual to work.

He has short shoulder length coily curly hair that he manages very well (thanks to my help with his routine!)

and he gets a lot of compliments on it, especially from other men.

He mentioned to me the other day that women keep staring at him on the train and it made him uncomfortable and embarrassed for the women.

He’s like, I don’t know why they do it! I couldn’t help but laugh and say, welcome to life as a woman!

Sometimes people do not fully understand an uncomfortable experience until they unexpectedly find themselves on the receiving end of it. The husband had spent years working largely from home, surrounded mostly by male colleagues, so commuting through a busy city introduced him to a completely different social environment.

Suddenly, strangers were staring at him often enough that he noticed, felt embarrassed, and asked his wife why it kept happening. Her amused response—essentially “welcome to life as a woman”—came from recognizing something she had probably experienced many times herself.

His discomfort should not be dismissed simply because he is an attractive man receiving attention from women. Attention is flattering when someone welcomes it. When it is prolonged, unexplained, or difficult to escape on public transportation, the same attention can create self-consciousness.

A person may start wondering what strangers are examining, why they are looking, or whether something about their appearance is wrong.

There is also a useful gender perspective here. The amusing reversal does not mean men and women experience unwanted gazes identically. Women encounter sexual objectification more frequently and often have additional concerns about harassment or personal safety.

Still, the husband’s experience may give him an unusually direct understanding of why comments such as “take it as a compliment” can miss the point. The issue is often not attractiveness but losing control over when one becomes an object of somebody else’s attention.

Psychologist Susan Krauss Whitbourne, Ph.D., professor emerita of psychological and brain sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, explains that an unwanted gaze can become psychologically distracting because the person being watched may begin wondering how they are being evaluated.

Discussing research on objectifying stares, she notes that such attention can produce discomfort, appearance anxiety, and difficulty concentrating.

The research she reviews primarily concerns women, so it should not automatically be generalized to every stare directed at this husband, but it helps explain why being visibly scrutinized can feel unpleasant rather than complimentary.

Broader research summarized by the American Psychological Association also links sexual objectification with increased appearance monitoring, anxiety, shame, and reduced ability to concentrate, particularly among women.

That makes the wife’s laughter affectionate but surprisingly educational. Her husband has discovered that being considered attractive and enjoying strangers’ attention are two different things.

The healthiest takeaway is simple: attraction itself is harmless, but people can show interest without turning another person into a spectacle. A quick glance is ordinary human behavior. Persistent staring can make almost anyone uncomfortable, regardless of gender.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

This commenter was relieved the attention wasn’t causing relationship trouble and praised the couple’s strong bond

Active_Recording_789 − Oh thank god i thought you were going to say he started ogling others and i thought you’re taking it awfully well!

OP it sounds like you have a great relationship, that’s awesome

These Redditors compared his unwanted attention to what women commonly experience

UnableChard2613 − I was at my local bar one night where I was a regular. One of the other regulars is gay, and he and I chatted all the time.

One night he outright propositioned me, I told him I was flattered but he knows I'm straight and with a woman, and he seemed to take the r__ection fine.

He order a few rounds a shots, and a bit later in the night tried again, but this time much more aggressively, telling me

it would be the best blowjob of my life and how he really knows how to treat a man. I told him no again and he kind of stormed out...

Bartender, who is a very attractive woman, was like "welcome to being a women. You actually handled that very well. "

ChinaHealthGuide − He just got the free trial version of being a woman.

These users responded with humor about attracting stares for completely different reasons

Rabbitrules87 − Tell him to start acting like Mr. Bean. He’ll still be getting the stares, but for completely different reasons! 😂

tiredcheesefiend − As a nerdy tech male I too have experienced this awkward ness of people staring intently at me in what I can only assume was ogling. ..

Anyway later on I realized I was wearing some quirky T-shirt and they were all simply deciphering it 🤣

These commenters joked about the contrast between men getting too little attention and women getting too much

reckaband − Some of us die of thirst 🏜️ while other drown 🌊

manicmonkeys − The classic. ..young men are generally starved for attention, while young women are generally drowning in it.

Always nice when someone gets to see the other side of the coin, and hopefully come away a better person for the experience.

This commenter questioned why the husband felt embarrassed for the women rather than simply uncomfortable himself

melancholy_dood − He mentioned to me the other day that women keep staring at him on the train

and it made him uncomfortable and embarrassed for the women.

Why would he be embarrassed for women who are staring at him? I can understand if he is embarrassed because he is being stared at.

But, being embarrassed for someone who is staring at him seems an odd thing to do. Maybe I’m misunderstanding what you wrote and what you meant…

These Redditors playfully suggested the husband must be exceptionally attractive to draw so much attention

OldDog03 − Just picture John Hamm from the show Mad Mean. Some lady will approach him and make him an offer.

miraivel − Wow, those shameless women… anyway do you have a pic of your husband?

Was his wife’s “welcome to life as a woman” response perfectly timed, or would the attention feel flattering rather than uncomfortable to others? Share the verdict below.
