Unemployed Bride Goes $13,000 Over Wedding Budget, Then Pressures Her Broke Bridesmaids Into an International Bachelorette Trip

in Social Issues

Weddings can reveal a surprising side of people, especially when expectations start colliding with everyone else’s financial reality.

What feels like a dream celebration to one person can feel like relentless pressure to the people expected to participate.

One bridesmaid is frustrated after watching a longtime friend plan an expensive destination bachelorette despite knowing that every member of the bridal party is struggling financially.

The bride herself is unemployed, already over budget on the wedding, and dealing with major household debt, yet she refuses cheaper local ideas even though they live in one of the country’s biggest bachelorette destinations.

The poster has offered to organize and pay for something nearby, but the bride keeps pushing for the trip she wants instead.

Scroll down to see why the experience has started changing how the poster sees a friend she once considered responsible and thoughtful.

not the actual photo

'My (MOH) broke bride friend won't accept anything less than an international vacation for her Bachelorette and it's making me not like her anymore?'

This is a rant and I'll get over it but I really didn't expect this friend in

particular to be so ?? Selfish ? Oblivious? Inconsiderate? I always thought

she made good decisions and was financially responsible in general but this

whole wedding, relationship, bridesmaid experience has been pretty s__tty

ngl. I don't like it but I have less respect for her in general which sucks.

There is literally so much to talk about I don't even know how to summarize

it. But right now she has 3 bridesmaid. All 4 of us are broke as f__k.

Bridesmaid 1 is a SAHM to 4 soon to be 5 kids. Currently 6 months ?

Pregnant. Has a 9 month old and her husband works at a gas station..

Bridesmaid 2 Is in college, works at target. Adopted her neice out of foster care in her 20s.

ME: I quit my job back in February and started doing side jobs for money.

I'm still the most ok financially but I don't have international vacation money laying around.

Bride is also unemployed and their wedding is $13k overbudget. They've

already spend $28k because no one bothered to track spending. And their

household is 40k behind on taxes. She just bought a new Lexus before quitting her job for health reasons. Like ??

I told her all of this is a terrible idea and I'll plan and pay for something

local. Spa trip, nice brunch, trip to a custom perfume maker. People come

to OUR major city for Bachelorettes literally all the time. Literally were in

Nashville. Bachelorette capital of the US. But no. She doesn't want to do that.

She also stole the destination from a trip I had planned for next year with a

different couple that she was also invited too ??. I could write a novel but

this is already too long.. Bonus she was my MOH a few years back and

didn't plan a Bachelorette for me at all.. Edit. The other bridesmaids aren't my friends. They're the brides friends from school.

To be clear, the bride is fine paying her own travel expenses but

consistently quilt trips everyone else into agreeing to join even when all of

us has explicitly said we can't afford it. With " I want you to come so bad.

😫" type texts or just flat out refusing any other suggestions.

She doesn't expect us to pay for her. I actually don't think she gets how any

of this works beyond stuff she sees on Instagram to be honest.

Also some of y'all are real bitchy. Sorry I didn't immediately ditch a friend of

over 8 years because she's being a bridezilla right now.

Sometimes people do not need to explicitly demand money to make someone feel pressured to spend it.

That seems to be what is exhausting the OP. The bride apparently intends to pay her own travel costs, but she continues pushing an international bachelorette trip after every bridesmaid has communicated that money is tight.

“I want you to come so bad” sounds affectionate in isolation. Repeated after someone says they cannot afford the trip, it can start feeling like guilt dressed up as enthusiasm.

The financial context makes that disconnect particularly striking.

One bridesmaid is supporting a growing family, another is a college student raising her niece, and the OP herself has inconsistent income.

Meanwhile, the bride’s wedding is already significantly over budget and her household has other financial obligations.

None of that means the bride is forbidden from wanting an extravagant celebration.

It does mean her friends should not have to destabilize their own finances to participate in it.

Research on financial well-being supports why these conversations can become so emotionally loaded.

The American Psychological Association has repeatedly found money to be a significant source of stress for Americans, with financial concerns affecting emotional well-being and relationships.

Social expectations can make that worse because declining an expense may feel like declining the relationship itself. American Psychological Association: Stress and money

There is also an important distinction between disappointment and pressure.

The bride is allowed to feel disappointed that her closest friends cannot join the trip she imagined.

Her bridesmaids are equally allowed to say, “I cannot afford that,” without being repeatedly asked to reconsider.

A financial boundary does not require the other person to agree that the expense is unreasonable.

The OP’s resentment also seems larger than this particular trip.

She remembers receiving no bachelorette celebration when this same friend was her maid of honor, and she is now watching enormous expectations develop in the opposite direction.

That comparison probably makes the current demands feel less like wedding excitement and more like an imbalance in reciprocity.

Still, immediately ending an eight-year friendship over one difficult wedding period would not necessarily be the only reasonable response.

Weddings can magnify existing differences around money, attention, expectations, and friendship without automatically defining an entire person.

What probably needs to end is the negotiation.

The OP can give one final answer: she loves her friend, wants to celebrate her, and can spend up to a specific amount on a local event.

An international trip is not financially possible.

After that, the bride can choose the destination she wants.

But choosing an expensive celebration also means accepting that some loved ones will not be there.

Friendship should never require someone to prove their affection with a plane ticket they cannot afford.

See what others had to share with OP:

These commenters agreed OP should refuse unaffordable wedding expenses and set a firm financial boundary

classicicedtea − If she won’t accept your proposed alternative then tell her she can pay for the whole thing herself.

rockin-ehw − Tell her she’s on her own for anything out of state. Hard stop. She doesn’t have to like it; it’s your truth.

spaetzele − I'm getting indigestion and sweats just from reading that. This

isn't beer budget, champagne tastes. This is TAP WATER budget,

champagne tastes. You know, she can dig her own self into whatever ill

considered financial hole she wants to for her own wedding expenses, but

none of the rest of you are required to do the same.

Either bow out respectfully before this whole thing explodes, or give her a

short talk on realistic expectations and manage what is manageable. And

tell her to stop looking at social media as a cue for what the baseline for

any of this stuff is, because she has completely lost the plot.

These Redditors argued that the bride’s behavior shows she is not acting like a genuine friend

sloretactician − Why are you friends with this b__

HorkupCat − Ditch the MOH role, ditch the wedding, ditch the bride (pro

tip: she's not your friend) and back away from the colossal disaster in the making that is her life.

Vibe_me_pos − The fact she didn’t even plan a bar hop bachelorette for

your wedding, yet wants you and her other friends to pay for an expensive

destination vacation for her bachelorette, tells me everything I need to

know about your leech—I mean “friend. ” Drop out of this farce of a

wedding now and back away from the one-sided “friendship. ”

MacDaddyDC − friends don’t require friends to go into debt for anything,

ever. She is not a friend. Bride sounds more like an entitled, immature, self-absorbed moron. Wish her well as you wave goodbye.

These users advised OP to step down from the wedding party while remaining cordial if possible

WorldWeary1771 − One of the hardest things about adulthood is realizing

that you don’t like some of your friends anymore. It’s hard but better for

both of you to end the close friendship now so you can remain cordial in

group settings with shared friends. The harder you hold on, the more toxic the relationship becomes until there’s nothing left.

I would tell her with apologies that you simply cannot afford what she

wants so you are bowing out of the wedding party but will attend as a

guest to share their joy on this important day. It’s very hard for people to

yell at you when you are sincerely wishing them well.

Her reaction will tell you if there’s anything worth salvaging of the relationship

londonschmundon − A SAHM should not be having 5 children when the

only income is the husband working at a gas station, what is she even

thinking? She should at least gracefully decline being a bridesmaid.

Ansible90 − All of you bridesmaids should back out. None of you can pay for an overseas trip. Just tell her you cannot go.

These Redditors mocked the bride’s family-planning and financial circumstances as another sign of poor judgment

U2hansolo − I'm more concerned about your friend who got knocked up 3

months post partum with her fifth kid by her gas station employee

husband. If anything needs to be bought, it's a vasectomy.

HealthyMaximum − ". .. Has a 9 month old \[. ..\] and pregnant . .." Everyone should have a hobby, I guess.

These users humorously mocked the bride’s extravagant expectations compared with OP’s limited budget

Sugar_Mama76 − Take her to Olive Garden, get her the Tour of Italy and

tell her it’s the international vacation on all of your budget.

mynameisnotsparta − Insane. Where does she think you are going to get money from? A tree?

Wanting a memorable bachelorette trip isn’t unreasonable, but repeatedly pushing an international vacation after every bridesmaid has clearly said she cannot afford it turns excitement into financial pressure.

The bride may not expect anyone to cover her expenses, yet guilt-heavy messages and refusing affordable alternatives still put her friends in an uncomfortable position.

Eight years of friendship does not need to end over one stressful wedding, but it also doesn’t require going into debt to prove loyalty.

Would you simply decline the trip and keep the friendship, or confront her about how inconsiderate the pressure has become?
