Teen Says His Severely Disabled Twin Brother Is Destroying the Family, Then Finally Pushes for Residential Care

in Social Issues

Growing up alongside a family member with extremely high care needs can affect every person in the household.

When exhaustion becomes constant and safety starts becoming a concern, love alone may not be enough to make the situation sustainable.

One teenager reached that breaking point while living with his 17-year-old twin brother, who has profound developmental disabilities and requires extensive supervision.

The poster describes years of disrupted family life, frightening incidents, physical injuries, and parents who are already stretched beyond exhaustion.

His mother has resisted residential care because she cannot imagine being separated from her son, while the poster feels increasingly trapped and overlooked in his own home.

After one particularly difficult night, he finally asked for help.

Scroll down to see how that moment pushed the family’s social workers to begin seriously considering a residential placement.

A teenager reaches a breaking point after years of living with a severely disabled brother whose behavior has become dangerous

'I can't live like this any longer?'

My twin brother is 17 years old and severely mentally disabled. He is

essentially the mind of a toddler in the body of a strong adult man.

My brother is k__ling me and my family. All of us. As I'm writing this its

12am and my brother wants to go for a drive, but he has spent ten minutes

closely monitoring the door, pressing his head against the doorbell,

walking in circles, and opening and closing the door over and over again.

My dad is exhausted and he has a full day of work tommorow. He has to get

up at 7am. He is swearing and raising my voice at my brother which he

never does. My mother is screaming. I'm trying my best not to show any emotion.

A few months ago, he sat on my kitten and killed her. A few days ago, he

grabbed my arm and nearly broke it. For my whole life, he has been

essentially torturing me and my family. My mother refuses to have him sent

to a home because she would miss him. She is the only one who wants him

to stay living with us. I don't know what to do. He's turning me into

someone I'm not. He makes me feel angry and violent, and I don't want to

hurt anyone. My older sister, my auntie, everyone who I have cried to for

help, have told me to give me family grace. For seventeen years, I've been

giving them grace while I rotted away in my room trying my best not to

engage with them because I knew they were too tired and annoyed to be

with me. I can't take it anymore. What am I supposed to do?

EDIT: Thank you for all of your heartfelt comments. I appreciate every

single one. This post was made during a particularly difficult moment

where I wasn't fully in my right mind, so let me clear up some points.. \-My

brother does get respite. Four nights a month.. \-Social workers frequently visit our house.

\-My parents are good people in terrible situations. I am aware that I was

neglected as a child but I do not blame them.. \-I am unable to move out of

my house until I'm 18 and have the money to do so.

The following day after making this post, social workers visited. I asked

about a residential home and they told me that it was a long process, but a

process which is starting today. They're going to start really looking into

residential rather than just dipping their toes in the water. I said some

rather hurtful things and my mother cried quite a bit, which was difficult.

But I'm trying to give myself some grace in a situation where there usually

isn't enough time or energy for grace to be given.

Inspired by all of your comments, I made a rough plan. When I turn 18, I'm

going to raise a couple thousand pounds however I can and move to a small

apartment. My mother does not approve of this idea at all. She thinks I

have it good and I'm lucky and that I'm ungrateful, but I know myself and what I need.

Sometimes loving a disabled family member and being unable to keep living with them can both be true.

That is the tension running through this story.

The OP clearly understands that his twin brother is profoundly disabled and not behaving with the intent or judgment of a typical 17-year-old.

But understanding why someone behaves dangerously does not make the danger disappear.

The household described here sounds exhausted beyond what occasional patience can solve.

The OP reports serious physical aggression, the death of a pet, disrupted sleep, screaming parents, and years spent isolating himself to avoid adding to everyone else’s burden.

That matters because siblings of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities can experience significant emotional strain of their own.

A 2024 systematic review of 60 studies found recurring themes including sibling-focused parentification, caregiving roles, anxiety, depression, and behavioral adjustment difficulties.

More recent research also emphasizes that siblings themselves need attention and support.

A 2026 study found that children who have siblings with intellectual disabilities described needs for emotional support, individual attention, peer connection, and help dealing with difficult sibling behavior.

That makes the OP’s anger easier to understand. He is not simply irritated by his brother.

He appears to have spent much of childhood adapting himself around the needs of the household.

Even when parents are loving and overwhelmed rather than malicious, the typically developing child can still experience real neglect. Intent does not erase impact.

His mother’s resistance to residential care is emotionally understandable too. For a parent, placement may feel like rejection, failure, or losing daily access to a child.

But residential support does not automatically mean severing the family relationship.

In a situation involving significant care needs and physical safety concerns, increasing professional support can protect everyone, including the disabled person.

The most hopeful part of the update is that social workers are now beginning the residential process.

That turns the crisis from an impossible private family problem into something professionals can help manage.

The OP’s plan to move out at 18 is also not evidence of ingratitude.

Wanting a bedroom where he can sleep safely, keep pets safely, and stop monitoring another person’s behavior is a basic need for autonomy.

He does not have to hate his brother to need distance from him.

And he does not have to sacrifice his own adulthood to prove that he loves his family.

Check out how the community responded:

These Redditors urged OP to seek trusted adults, family support, or another safe place and begin planning an exit

drumadarragh − Go to a school counselor if you can. You should not have to

live life like this because your mother only sees your brother. I am so sorry about your kitten.

AttitudeRemarkable87 − we need a little more info. And we care. I assume

some things: American? Senior in high school? College plans? Your brother

is NOT your problem. Take care of yourself and make plans to get out of

there. College-- take out loans if you gave to. This is apparently your

mother's problem. If she will miss him so badly, leave it all to her.

Her bad decisions are destroying you.

infinityonhigh69 − this majorly sucks in a way i can’t properly convey in a a

few sentences and you know this. because none of your extended family is

supportive, id see if you can maybe ask a trusted friend to let you stay

while you try to find a job to save up money so you can get your own place.

god i keep trying to think of other suggestions but irdk. is there a teacher

at your school or another staff member there that you trust to help you?

if it were me and i had NO ONE at all…i might hypothetically potentially

think about taking things from the house to sell for cash so that i can stash

up and escape somewhere, even if it is a s__tty motel room.

while i don’t have many suggestions of what to do, let me just clearly say:

DO NOT TRUST A RANDOM OLDER MAN WITH YOUR LIFE OR SAFETY OR

ANYTHING! !! There are so many creeps that are specifically looking for

vulnerable young girls like yourself so please please please be careful.

no you are not mature for your age no matter what he says, if he can’t find

someone his own age that is because people his own age are too smart to

be emotionally manipulated by him! !!! please please omg

AdorableEmphasis5546 − Talk to your dad. See if he is interested in leaving

the situation with you. If your mom won't see reason, maybe the two of

you leaving (even just temporarily) will convince her that help is needed.

These commenters strongly backed contacting CPS or police because OP is experiencing abuse and remains unsafe at home

CoDaDeyLove − He is abusing you. Call child protective services or tell a

school counselor what's going on. It might mean that you move into foster

care or (hopefully) can live with a friend or another relative. You shouldn't

have to live like this. Your brother needs help from people who understand his developmental disability.

What will your parents do when they are in their 70's and he starts beating

them? This happened with an aunt and uncle of mine and they were forced

to put their son in a group home when he was 46 years old and severely

injured my uncle. He actually thrived in the group home.

erylego − You are a minor still and so is your brother so call the police or

CPS and explain your situation. He very obviously needs to be

institutionalized and if your mom/family cannot understand that, then you need to leave as soon as you can.

lun4d0r4 − Call the cops and report every single instance. Your mother is

delusional and is not helping him in any way. She's also having the rest of

the family suffer for her selfish preference. I hope you move out and go NC with her.

lucyfell − Ask your older sister “what happens if he tries to SA me? I’m

supposed to just give him grace? ” But seconding everyone who says to go

to CPS. Explain that he kills animal and is abusing you.

WhatTheActualFck1 − Report everything to the police and CPS. It’s cruel

that your mother only truly cares about ONE member of the family, and it’s the one that is destroying the rest.

These users emphasized that a sibling’s disability does not require OP to endure abuse, neglect, or sacrifice personal safety

DownwardSpiralHam − As someone who can strongly relate to this

scenario, my opinion on this subject is harsh. The part you wrote about

rotting away in your room gets swept away by so many people who just don’t get it.

So many parents just straight up n__lect their non-disabled kids and subject

the kids to abuse, then try to guilt trip them into “be grateful that you’re

normal” and obligating the “normal” kids to sacrifice they didn’t sign up for. Your mom needs a major reality check.

If she won’t budge, I hope you and your dad can find some peace even if

that means leaving her behind in her stubborn ignorance.

TheJinxedPhoenix − OP, find an adult you can trust to talk about this with.

A teacher is a good choice if you don’t have family you can trust to help

you. You are not doing anything wrong by telling someone what has and is

currently happening to you because of your twin. You mentioned your twin has tried to cause you physical harm.

Some people will tell you that your twin having a mental disability means

that “they weren’t trying to hurt you” but that doesn’t make you safe. You

should not have not wait until you’re 18 to have a safe home, assuming you

can even find a place to live. You deserve to be safe, OP.

It is not selfish to want safety, and forget anyone that tells you otherwise.

This isn’t a teenager being ungrateful. It’s someone who has spent years living in a household overwhelmed by caregiving demands, while also experiencing neglect, exhaustion, fear, and physical danger.

Loving her brother and understanding her parents’ impossible position does not mean sacrificing her own safety indefinitely.

The fact that social workers are finally beginning the residential process is an important step, and planning for independence at eighteen is reasonable.

Do you think her mother’s resistance comes from fear of losing her son, or from not fully recognizing what the situation has cost her daughter?
