Customer Gets a Family-Sized McDonald’s Order by Mistake and Keeps It After the Employee Treats Her Rudely

Most people expect drive-thru mistakes to be inconvenient, not strangely satisfying. But when a simple order comes with unnecessary attitude, even a small mix-up can suddenly feel like an opportunity to stop being helpful.

One customer shared what happened after visiting McDonald’s for a quick shake and sandwich. The employee taking the order was dismissive and made the poster feel foolish for asking about a seasonal drink that was not available at that location.

Things stayed awkward at the pickup window, until the employee began handing over far more food than had been ordered. One large bag became another, followed by multiple drinks and kids meals.

It quickly became obvious that the customer had received someone else’s much larger order. Instead of pointing out the mistake, the poster simply smiled and drove away. Scroll down to see why they felt no obligation to save the rude employee from her own error.

not the actual photo

'I didn’t correct a rude McDonald’s employees mistake'

One time I went through the McDonald’s drive-thru and the person taking my order was unbelievably rude.

I had heard the Shamrock Shake was back, but apparently it wasn’t available at this location, and she made me feel like an i__ot for even asking.

So I just ordered a vanilla shake and a McChicken and drove up.

When I got to the pickup window, she was there, rude and didn’t say anything. She handed me a large bag.

At first I was confused like, what the hell? I only ordered a McChicken.

Then came another huge bag with 2 kids meals, followed by a tray of drinks with sodas and a shake. I pretty much got food for a family of 6.

I realized she had apparently given me someone else’s order. Because she had been such an a__hole to me, I smiled, said nothing, and drove away.

Sometimes a stranger’s rudeness creates an immediate temptation to stop caring what happens to them. The customer entered the drive-thru asking a perfectly ordinary question about a seasonal shake and came away feeling mocked and dismissed.

So when the same employee accidentally handed over bags containing far more food than he had ordered, driving away probably felt less like stealing someone’s dinner and more like letting an unpleasant person experience the consequences of her own mistake.

That reaction is emotionally understandable. It is also where the story becomes less satisfying than it initially appears.

The customer knew almost immediately that the food was not his. Two kids’ meals, multiple drinks, and enough food for several people could not plausibly have been an upgrade to a McChicken and vanilla shake.

By saying nothing, he was no longer simply accepting an employee’s error. He was consciously allowing it to continue because he felt she deserved the inconvenience.

Psychologist Leon F. Seltzer, Ph.D., describes anger as strongly connected to perceived disrespect, unfairness, or humiliation. Once people feel mistreated, retaliation can become attractive because it seems to restore the balance: someone made me feel bad, so I no longer feel obligated to protect them from the consequences of their mistake.

Research on revenge suggests why that moment can feel surprisingly rewarding. Psychologist Jennifer Fayard, Ph.D., notes that some studies find retaliation can provide short-term satisfaction, especially when people believe someone has wronged them.

But her review also found that people generally reported more positive emotions when they did not retaliate at all. Revenge can keep attention anchored to the original offense rather than allowing it to fade.

There is another person missing from this revenge story: whoever actually ordered that food. The rude employee was the intended target, but another customer likely became part of the consequence through no fault of their own. The restaurant may also have needed to remake the order while everyone involved dealt with the confusion.

None of this makes the employee’s attitude acceptable. Basic courtesy is part of customer service, and humiliating someone for asking whether a menu item is available is unnecessary. But bad service did not turn someone else’s order into compensation.

The better response would have been to point out the mistake, take the food actually purchased, and decide afterward whether the employee’s behavior warranted a complaint.

The customer’s impulse was relatable, but that does not make the choice fair. The clearest test of retaliation is often not whether the person who annoyed us deserved consequences, but whether innocent people had to absorb them too.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These Redditors jokingly focused on whether OP enjoyed all the accidental extra food

Antique_Librarian_96 − Did you eat all of it?

Bluetickhoun − Haha. Did you circle back around cuz they forgot your milkshake? ?

These commenters shared stories where employees made payment mistakes and never gave them a real chance to correct it

southdakotagirl − I was at goodwill getting work clothes for a bank job. I had a cashier tell me my total was $200. I gave her my card.

After I grabbed my bags and loaded them in the cart she handed me my receipt.

A line had formed behind me because I bought a huge amount of clothes.

I started walking away and saw my credit card receipt. She only entered in $20. Not $200.

I turned around to talk to her and she rudely told me to keep the line moving. I left.

I called back the next day and asked for the manager who was on lunch, they took a message. Nevergot a call back.

I tried explaining to a different cashier about the mistake and she got really confused.

My friend told me you tried 3 times to give them back their money. They didnt listen. Take it as a win for you.

loyalwolf186 − One time I was on a road trip with my brother, and we stopped at a random Carl's Jr drive thru.

We ordered fine and got to the pickup window.

I had my credit card in hand ready to pay, and the girl just opens the window, hands me my bag and shuts the window and walks away.

I just sat there kinda stunned for a bit and waited a few minutes, and eventually we just drove off with our free food, lol

Objective_Water_5235 − lol once a dmv employee was super rude to me when I was trying to get a state ID.

He wasn’t listening to anything I was saying, made a snarky remark when I tried to tell him that I had a disability

that would interfere with communicating with the police (something he specifically asked and then for some reason was a d__k about).

Despite being medically prohibited from driving, he gave me a license instead of an ID. I had never taken a driving test even.

I didn’t say anything. He was so rude and a horrible listener, I couldn’t even bother.

I didn’t drive with the license, but sure did use it to my benefit for getting jobs and such.

These users felt that once the food was handed over, the mistake was the restaurant’s problem

AnEvenNicerGuy − Once its out the window they can't take it back so their bad whether you say something or not

luxix_d − lol as u should periodd get that extra food

These Redditors treated the extra food as harmless karma or an unexpected bonus

Quiet_Sirens − karma served, with fries

Low-Set8263 − Taco Bell in my neighborhood in the early 80’s. Dudes behind the counter were so high.

OkTurnover4438 − A few years back I pulled up at the drive thru window to collect my order.

They had given my food to car in front, and I was told to park in the waiting bay as they remade it. They damn forgot about me.

Left me waiting until I had to call them from my car. No apology, no discount or complimentary ice cream cone.

Would most people have corrected the mistake, or quietly accepted their surprise family feast?
