Woman Removes Pregnant Daughter-in-Law’s Bedroom Door After Catching Her Reading Teen’s Private Journal

Living with family temporarily can test boundaries even when everyone starts with good intentions. Once someone begins going through private rooms, belongings, and personal writing, however, the arrangement can quickly stop feeling like a favor and start feeling like an invasion.

One homeowner described reaching that point with her pregnant daughter-in-law, who had been staying in the house while she and the poster’s son tried to buy a home. The poster says she repeatedly noticed belongings being moved and eventually learned that her daughter-in-law had been reading the 15-year-old daughter’s private journal.

After several conversations failed to stop the behavior, the poster installed a lock on the teenager’s door. When the snooping apparently continued elsewhere, she made a much more drastic decision involving her daughter-in-law’s own bedroom. Scroll down to see why the family is now divided over whether the punishment fit the offense.

A homeowner removes her pregnant daughter-in-law’s door after repeated snooping violates the family’s privacy

'AITA for taking off my DIL door when she broke everyone’s privacy?'

I am at my wits end. This is about my DIL who is living at my place at the moment. My DIL is pregnant and they are in the process...

They have been at my place for about a month and it seems to be no end date for them moving out due to the house they were going to...

It doenst help that my son is traveling a lot to give them more money for a cushion before the baby was born.

The issue is that she all up in everyone business. I have talked to her and my son on multiple times.  She only stops snooping when my son is home.

When he is traveling she will go right back to snooping. I have noticed things in my room have been touched.

She told me about my youngest ( she is 15) broke curfew. She was late home, I already knew this.

The biggest issue is she started to mention things that she shouldn’t know about my youngest.

My youngest keeps a journal and she told me it was in the wrong spot. I confronted my DIL about it and she admitted she was reading it.

I was pissed and we got into a huge argument and her defense was she doesn’t deserve privacy because my daughter doesn’t own the house.

I installed a lock on my youngest door.

DIL is 7 months pregnant and if I kicked her out she will not have anywhere to go.

I don’t want the mother of my grandkid homeless even if it only for a bit. Also that would be a nuke on the relationshi.

She promised that it wouldn’t happen again but I found my stuff moved in my room.

So I took her door. If she can’t respect people’s privacy than she doesn’t get her own privacy.  She is pissed and my son is saying I went too far.

That she needs privacy becuase he is so far along pregnant

I told my son she can live in my house without a door or they can get out.

I made it clear that this is the only option. She is still pissed but she seems to be staying

Privacy is one of those things that people often do not fully appreciate until someone crosses the line. In this situation, the central issue is not that the DIL is pregnant, temporarily living with family, or curious about what is happening around her.

The issue is that she repeatedly entered spaces and accessed information that were not hers to see, even after being told to stop.

Reading someone’s private journal is a major violation. A journal is not simply an object sitting in a room; it is a place where a person can express thoughts without fear of judgment or exposure.

The fact that the person affected is a 15-year-old makes the situation even more serious because teenagers often need a private space while developing independence and emotional security.

The DIL’s argument that someone does not deserve privacy because they do not own the house is also concerning. Privacy is not something earned through property ownership.

People maintain personal boundaries in rented apartments, family homes, shared houses, and temporary living arrangements. Living under someone else’s roof does not give someone unlimited access to their belongings or thoughts.

Research on boundaries in relationships shows that healthy families still require clear limits around personal space and autonomy.

Family systems theorists such as Salvador Minuchin emphasized that functional families need boundaries between members rather than complete emotional or physical access to everything each person does. When boundaries become too weak, conflict and resentment often increase.

However, removing the bedroom door creates a complicated problem. The OP’s frustration is understandable, but two wrongs do not necessarily create a solution. A door is not only about privacy; it is also about dignity, security, and comfort. Removing it as punishment risks creating a new privacy violation rather than solving the original one.

A stronger approach would be enforcing consequences that directly address the behavior: no access to private rooms, locked doors, clear household rules, and a firm move-out timeline if those rules are ignored.

The OP has already shown compassion by allowing her pregnant DIL and son to stay during a difficult housing situation. Compassion, however, does not require sacrificing the safety and privacy of everyone else in the home.

The son is also in a difficult position, but protecting his pregnant wife should not mean dismissing the harm caused to his younger sister and mother. He should be helping his wife understand that being welcomed into someone’s home comes with responsibilities.

The OP is justified in being angry. The journal incident especially crossed a serious line. But the most effective boundary is not “you lose your privacy because you took someone else’s.” It is “everyone in this house deserves privacy, and anyone who cannot respect that will lose the privilege of staying here.”

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These Redditors worried her immature behavior could become a serious problem once she becomes a parent

guys_pm_urprettyface − NTA. She is about to be a mom, she needs to get out of the teenage mentally.

Optimal-Ingenuity-90 − NTA. How old is this girl, 12? I feel sorry for your grandkid's future.

BungleBums − . ..she's reading someone else's kids' diary? And commenting on in? Warn your son this girl is a bad mom in the making.

tiredcustard − NTA. I'm worried about how she's going to treat her kid if she believes your daughter isn't allowed privacy. she sounds like a n__ty person.

These commenters thought OP had tolerated too much and should consider making the couple move out

BobTheSkull357 − NTA. She's getting back the energy she's giving. Honestly, she's lucky you're letting her stay.

Hotels and short term rentals exist. Your son is working and thus earning money. She doesn't have nowhere to go.

She is, however, imperiling their ability to save by doing things that would cause most people to kick them out.

If I was in your situation, she wouldn't be welcome in my home as a guest, overnight or otherwise.

SuckMachine98 − Stop putting up with her and kick them out.

These Redditors supported stronger boundaries, including locks and firm household rules

dragonflies2299 − put locks on all of your bedrooms. you shouldn't have to do that but it will stop her from going in there when you're not home.

and leave her door off - that's the consequence of behavior she was told to stop doing.

R4ng3r_ − NTA, this sounds like compulsive behavior and she needs therapy. Your house, your rules.

These users felt she clearly knows the behavior is wrong because she only stops when the son is present

Ok-Original4622 − NTA tbh the fact she only stops when your son is home says everything lol she clearly knows

its wrong she just does it when she thinks she can get away with it

Dogmother123 − Ironic that she says your daughter doesn't deserve privacy because she doesn't own the home.

When she who doesn't own the home either is invading everyone else's.

Tell your son he needs to use the cushion to rent a property. Her behaviour is awful. NTS

The homeowner had every reason to protect her teenage daughter and stop repeated snooping.

The journal violation crossed a serious boundary, and the APA supports balancing appropriate supervision with teenagers’ growing need for privacy and independence.

Removing the daughter-in-law’s door, however, is more debatable.

It punishes the behavior through humiliation rather than simply preventing another intrusion.

Locks, clear house rules, and a firm move-out condition would likely protect everyone more effectively.

Still, one thing seems difficult to dispute:

A guest who wants privacy for herself should probably start by respecting everyone else’s.
