Spoiler note: this article discusses the ending of the 2015 Secret Wars comic. It does not spoil Avengers: Doomsday, which has not been released.
The sky did not break. It simply stopped.
One moment the last heroes were still on their feet. The next, they were somewhere else, in a world that had always had a king.
That is the nightmare version of the question this article asks: what if Doctor Doom does not lose at the end of Avengers: Doomsday, but wins?
(Fan scenario. No film spoilers. The comic ending is discussed. What we know, what is rumor and what is guesswork are labeled throughout.)
Why this question is not crazy
Marvel’s directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, have said Doomsday and Secret Wars were built as two parts of one story. They have also refused to confirm or deny whether Battleworld, the planet from the comics, appears in either film. Doom is at the center of both.
In a separate interview this month, Joe Russo said the ending of Doomsday will surprise people. He did not say how. One outlet read that as a cliffhanger, with Doom winning or sending the heroes elsewhere, while another noted it could even mean something stranger, like Doom dying and Kang returning.
Put those together, and “Doom wins” is no longer a wild guess. It is the most common reading of a two-film structure. The Infinity War model is the obvious precedent: the villain wins the first film so the second can be about taking it back.
First, what is a God Emperor?
In Jonathan Hickman’s 2015 Secret Wars comic, universes collide in events called Incursions and are destroyed. Out of the wreckage, Doom builds a new planet called Battleworld, stitched together from the remains of the dead worlds.
Doom did not do it alone. He took the godlike power of the Beyonders, with the help of Molecule Man, and became a human god. He ruled Battleworld as God Emperor Doom, and the people there worshipped him.
He also took what he thought he deserved. In the comic, Doom takes Sue Storm as his wife and Franklin and Valeria Richards as his children, stealing the family of his lifelong rival, Reed Richards.
It ended when Molecule Man decided Reed was the more worthy candidate and gave Reed the power instead. Doom lost his powers, and Battleworld ended.
The scene we imagine (fan scenario)
Let us picture how this might look on screen. It is a guess, not a leak.
The heroes make their last stand. Thor swings, and it does not matter. Steve calls a hammer to his hand, and it does not matter either. Doom lifts a hand and the fighting stops, not with an explosion but with silence.
The world does not end. It is rewritten.
When the heroes open their eyes, the streets are familiar but the sky is wrong. Doom’s face is on every wall. People who loved them do not know their names. And somewhere above it all, a throne.
That is the image that makes the theory so appealing. It does not need to kill anyone. It only needs to take away the one thing the heroes cannot fight: the world they thought they knew.
What a Doom victory could look like

Way 1: The empty reset (rumor)
An insider known as James Mack, reporting in a story picked up this week, claims the heroes fail and an endless emptiness remains, with Doom as the lone survivor, who then builds a new world in his image. Most heroes, the rumor says, would live new lives manipulated by Doom, and many would lose their memories.
Treat this as a rumor. It has not been confirmed by Marvel, and the sources are leakers.
Way 2: Battleworld (comic precedent)
The simplest version is the comic one. Doom rebuilds reality as a patchwork planet, divided into domains, and rules it. The Russos have not ruled this out, and the trailer already gives Doom Sentinels, a throne room covered in runes, and a grudge against the heroes.
A second leak says Battleworld would be divided into domains, with rebels roaming them in search of something that could break the spell that holds it together. That is also unconfirmed.
Way 3: The quiet empire (a hint from the Russos)
The Russos wrote a foreword to the collected edition of Hickman’s Avengers: Time Runs Out, the story that leads into Secret Wars. They describe a Doom who believes he can save everything if he controls enough of it, and they say his world fails not through a dramatic explosion but through fear and compromise.
That suggests Doom’s victory may not look like a villain’s triumph. It may look like a ruler who sincerely thinks he is protecting reality.
What it could mean for each hero
These are guesses based on the trailer, the cast list and reports.
- Steve Rogers: Evans has reportedly confirmed he is in Secret Wars, so Steve is expected to survive. A Steve without a shield and with a borrowed hammer would be the perfect person to lose his world.
- Thor: the trailer shows Doom stopping Stormbreaker with ease. If Doom wins, Thor loses more than a fight.
- Sam Wilson: as Captain America, he leads a new team. A Doom victory tests whether he can hold it together without Steve.
- Yelena and the New Avengers: Marvel’s reported choice of Yelena as a story anchor makes her a candidate for the resistance.
- The X-Men and the Fantastic Four: both arrive in this film. In the comic, Doom takes the Richards family for his own, so Franklin, Sue and Reed are obvious targets.
- Spider-Man: the Brand New Day post-credits tag says he will return, but not where. Secret Wars is one place he could be.
How the heroes could fight back
Here is the interesting part. The Russos say Doom’s world falls to human frailty, not to a bigger punch. Reading that foreword, one outlet concluded that Secret Wars is about the survivors of the first film rattling Doom’s resolve and eroding the world he built.
If that holds, the second film is not about beating a god. It is about proving that even a god is still a man. And Doom, who has always been defined by what he lost, is the perfect man for that story.
The case against
It is fair to ask whether this is too obvious. Some fans want a real surprise, not a copy of the comic.
The Russos themselves have called the ending very surprising. If everyone already expects Doom to win, then “Doom wins” may not be the surprise at all. And the strongest evidence for the empty reset is a leak from one insider, which could easily be wrong.
So the honest answer is this: a Doom victory is likely, but how it looks is wide open.
