Kathryn Newton, known for her role as Cassie Lang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, recently opened up about the contrasts between her superhero gig and her latest role with the film Abigail. In a discussion with CinePop, Newton shared insights into how the two roles challenged her in different ways.
According to Newton, she found her time on Quantumania to be a breeze compared to the demands of Abigail.
This (Abigail) was, physically, actually harder than Ant-Man. Ant-Man was the easiest job of my life. It was really fun… And this one was just as fun, but it was different. We had a real set, we had real props, real people. So whatever inspiration you get is from what’s happening right in front of you and I didn’t have to make it up, there was no green screen. And that was much more freeing than I was prepared for,” the actress commented.
It seems that Abigail required more from her physically and provided a more traditional acting environment with actual sets and props. Newton also expressed a strong desire to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Cassie, reflecting on her connection to the franchise that grew as she did.
“I grew up watching Iron Man, and I feel like I grew up with that character. So if I get an opportunity to continue the story, then that would be so cool to be a part of a generation that’s growing up with a film,” she explained.
While she’s eager to reprise her role as Cassie, Newton acknowledged the unpredictability of the Marvel universe, noting that actors often don’t know when they’ll be called back. “It’s such a big part of my life. But they don’t really tell you,” she said.
“They tell you an overall, but I don’t take anything for granted. I am just trying to get through the day. Let’s finish one movie, and then let’s continue. But I would very much also jump at the opportunity to work with Marvel Studios again,” Newton added.
With the MCU gradually introducing younger heroes, speculation about a Young Avengers team-up has been rife. Newton is all for Cassie getting a Nick Fury-style recruitment call.
“Honestly, one of the biggest goals of my career was to be a Marvel superhero. I would do it forever if I could,” she enthused, adding that Hailee Steinfeld, who portrays Kate Bishop in the MCU, would be her dream co-star.
Marvel Studios hasn’t confirmed a Young Avengers project yet, but with new young heroes like the Maximoff brothers (Speed and Wiccan), Eli Bradley (Iron Patriot), Kid Loki, America Chavez, and Riri Williams (Ironheart) emerging, the foundation seems to be laid. The ending of The Marvels also suggests that Iman Vellani‘s Ms. Marvel is recruiting a group of young superheroes alongside Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop, mentioning Cassie Lang in the process.
