Discovering that a partner has been dishonest is painful enough. But sometimes a single conversation can uncover something so disturbing that the relationship instantly becomes the least important part of the story.

That is what happened to this 19-year-old Redditor after growing suspicious of her boyfriend’s behavior and deciding to investigate one unfamiliar phone number she found on his device.

What began as an attempt to confirm whether he had been cheating quickly turned into something far more alarming when she met the person behind the messages.

Suddenly, she was no longer asking whether she should end the relationship. She was wondering whether the situation belonged in the hands of law enforcement. Scroll down to see what happened.

A young woman uncovers disturbing evidence that her boyfriend may be secretly seeing an underage girl

'I found some disturbing information about my boyfriend idk what to do'

So for Context I am 19 years old and he is 20; he turns 21 in aug this is a crucial key factor.

Me and him have been a thing since i initially it was physical nothing serious then it became something more serious.

I had a feeling he was talking to multiple ppl and I have caught him a few times and unfortunately gave him the benefit of the doubt.

It became toxic as he is extremely triggered really fast and it came to be over the smallest thing.

The problem is I couldn’t leave him bc he always said he would off himself or smth and would even attempted in my face.

Well, A few days ago I stayed over his house and found a way to get into his phone.

I found a certain number in the phone that I have seen before but this time it wasn’t saved so I texted it and we had a conversation.

It was basically me asking if she knew anyone by his number or his name and she replied with yes we spoke abt it a little bit and decided to...

When I met up with her , her first question was do you know if he’s meeting up with anyone underage?

I replied with not that I know of and that he has told me abt someone close to him making up that rumor abt him a few months ago.

he never showed any signs to me and I was very verbal abt how I feel abt those types of people to him.

Well, She continued her sentence by saying its because “Im underage”. WHAT?!

I asked her age and she said she was 16, they started talking when she was 15 and she turns 17 soon.

She told me she tried ending it bc she didnt wanna get him in trouble

but it somehow fell into place which to me i assume he convinced her it was okay or something I don’t know.

They were supposed to meet the day after I met up with her meaning he was planning on meeting with a minor.

Mind you he turns 21 In a month… I genuinely have no idea how i should go about this.

It triggers me so much because ive been surrounded by pediphiles my entire life and im sleeping, eating, hanging out with one.

Not only that but just the fact hes sent stuff to her and shes sent back meaning he may even be in possession of child pornography.

Like I don’t know how I feel i feel literally nothing I believe Im just in shock still but I need some advice.

I know calling the police is an option but I would want his guardians to do that. So I may just tell them im not sure. Give me some advice...

Edit: I do want to say me and him are no longer a thing ever since i found out but he doesn’t know that I know shes a minor,

he doesnt know ive met up with her and spoke to her he has no idea of any of this.

I do have evidence her text messages with him and pictures i have video evidence of her verbally saying it and Snapchat messages as well.

Yes the mother knows she admitted to that on video as well and she doesn’t care . I live in Indiana The age of consent is 16 I believe.

Update: - I spoke about it to my mother and she told me there isn’t much i could do if the girl wasn’t willing to get involved as she is...

I also talked to a therapist and she told me something along the same lines as what my mother did.

I took some of your guys advice and spoke to the girl along with the parents,

it seems again the mother didn’t care much and was more upset at the fact I was speaking to her about it rather than allowing it.

Thank you for all the advice as it took me a while to make my decision and though im not fully content with

the outcome I am content with the fact I am away from that situation and that person.

I am sorry if this is not the update or outcome you’d want but this is what we settled with for her and for myself.

From a third-person perspective, the OP’s account describes a relationship that had already become emotionally unhealthy before she uncovered the messages.

She had repeatedly caught her boyfriend talking to other people, described explosive arguments over minor issues, and felt unable to leave because he allegedly threatened suicide and even attempted self-harm in front of her.

Mental health professionals often recognize threats of self-harm used to prevent a partner from leaving as a form of emotional coercion. Whether or not those threats stem from genuine distress, they can trap the other person in a relationship out of fear rather than choice.

By the time she discovered the conversations with the sixteen-year-old, she was already carrying the emotional burden of trying to manage someone else’s reactions.

The discovery itself understandably intensified her distress. According to her account, she met the young woman, learned that contact had reportedly begun when the girl was fifteen, and saw messages suggesting they planned to meet.

The OP immediately connected this to painful experiences from her own life and worried about the possibility of sexual exploitation or illegal images. It is important to acknowledge that these are allegations based on what she reports and that the full legal facts are not independently established.

Even so, the information she encountered was serious enough that ending the relationship was a reasonable step to protect herself while she considered what, if anything, she should report.

Another perspective is that legal questions and moral questions are not always identical. Age-of-consent laws differ by jurisdiction, and criminal liability depends on specific facts that strangers on the internet cannot verify.

That uncertainty, however, should not obscure the broader concern. Large maturity differences between a twenty-year-old and a mid-teenager can create significant power imbalances, particularly when the younger person is still developing emotionally and socially.

The OP did not have to determine whether a crime had occurred in order to recognize that the situation made her deeply uncomfortable and fundamentally changed how she viewed the relationship.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline explains that emotional abuse can include manipulation, intimidation, isolation, and using threats of self-harm to control a partner’s behavior. Such tactics often make it extremely difficult for someone to leave, even when they recognize the relationship has become unhealthy.

The organization emphasizes that each person is responsible for their own actions and that a partner is not responsible for preventing another adult’s threatened self-harm.

That context helps explain why the OP struggled to decide what to do next. She was navigating two separate crises at once: disentangling herself from a controlling relationship and deciding how to respond to information involving a minor.

Speaking with trusted adults, consulting a therapist, and encouraging the young woman to involve her parents were all attempts to seek guidance rather than handling such a complicated situation entirely on her own.

Although she understandably wished for a different response from the girl’s family, she ultimately made the decision that she could control: ending the relationship and removing herself from a situation she no longer felt was safe or morally acceptable.

Ultimately, this story is not only about discovering disturbing information. It is also about recognizing patterns of manipulation that had already eroded the relationship long before that discovery.

The update reflects an important shift: instead of continuing to carry responsibility for another person’s choices, the OP chose to prioritize her own safety and emotional well-being.

Sometimes the healthiest decision is not finding the perfect resolution to every problem, but refusing to remain connected to someone whose behavior repeatedly violates your trust and your sense of security.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These Redditors urged reporting the man to police or another mandatory reporter

edwardsvolvo − Eh, I'd gather evidence from this girl and send it straight to the cops. Dude's a sicko

West_Course2329 − Tell someone who is a mandatory reporter, not his guardians.

You don't know what they will do, and it sounds like he's a very manipulative person.

Tell a teacher or a licensed therapist, if you're not willing to go to the police.

This group warned that he sounded manipulative and potentially dangerous, while stressing the victim’s wishes should be respected

SquirrelsNRaccoons − His guardians? He's an adult. He also sounds violent and dangerous.

This girl should be the one reporting him, not you. Get away from this guy, get him out of your life.

Tell the teenage girl that if she needs you to talk to police or prosecuters,

you'll support her, but otherwise it is her and her family's decision whether they want to report him.

That is a lot for her to go through and it's not your place to put that spotlight on her if she isn't ready.

Respect what she wants, she's the victim here.

Nik-Bee − Uh. Yikes :/ First, I'm sorry you found yourself in such a difficult situation.

I've been in a situation, not like this exactly, but with the same type of predatory person.

I ended up talking to a victim, as well, who was not in the presence of mind to testify against him.

Which makes it all the more difficult if taking the info to police.

So, I feel ya. And a PSA to anyone who needs to know:

A person who threatens to take their life or hurt themselves if you end a relationship is 100% capable of doing the same to you.

They are exceedingly more likely to start with you whether or not they end up offing themselves.

These commenters said the relationship was already over and OP should leave immediately

SpookyWindChime − I mean if he’s cheating on you just break up with him no?

At the point you’re going through his phone the relationship is over anyway.

mebg1956 − Why are you with this manipulative creep. Are you addicted to drama, humiliation etc?

Break it off, block him on all media, and MOVE ON.

CreepyTeddyBear − What's the age of consent in your state?

Might not be anything you can do besides break up with him. Which you absolutely should.

This Redditor reflected on whether their own teenage relationship had also been inappropriate

AmIFanoffiction − This just makes me wonder if I was in a weird relationship. ... Was 16 dating a 20 year old.

These users focused on the age of consent and whether any crime had legally occurred

Hulbg1 − You have just said the age of consent is 16 so although creepy nothing illegal.

I suggest you deal with your demons far away from him it sounds like you have not had a great life.

Shes 17 soon so a year past the age of consent get some therapy and get on with your life.

nowaymacaroni − First of all, you don't know anything. The end. Break up with him if this upsets you.

I'm not saying he's innocent of anything, I'm saying there isn't any proof for you to take to the authorities.

You can play detective and keep digging if you want, but you're already triggered and I don't think that will do you any good mentally.

What would you have done after learning information like this? Should personal safety come first, or would you have felt obligated to pursue the matter further? Share your thoughts in the comments.
