Summary:
- The Russo Brothers, the producers behind Netflix’s Extraction franchise, revealed that a third movie is under development.
- The first two movies were very well-received on Netflix, and are among the more popular titles on the platform.
- Chris Hemsworth and Idris Elba are confirmed to return to the threequel.
After the end of Extraction 2, fans are on their seats to hear updates about Chris Hemsworth‘s next mission as the mercenary Tyler Rake. Well, the franchise’s producers, the Russo brothers, have some good news for them.
In the works at Netflix, Extraction 3 is taking shape with the Russo Brothers once again at the helm of production. During a recent interview at the Sands: International Film Festival, Joe Russo disclosed that he’s penning the screenplay. Speaking to GamesRadar+, he shared:
Yeah, we’re developing it at the moment, figuring out Chris’s schedule. Sam Hargrave is back directing. It’s an interesting franchise because he’s a very emotionally wounded character, so there’s good storytelling there I think in respect to his backstory, and, you know, his relationship to violence is one that’s built around self-loathing and guilt. And so, it adds a lot of texture I think, which allows us to tell more stories about him.”
The Extraction saga, originating from the graphic novel Ciudad, catapulted to popularity with its first film debuting in April 2020. This introduction saw Tyler Rake undertaking a daring rescue of an Indian drug supplier’s son in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Despite mixed reviews, the movie broke Netflix records as its most-watched original film at that time.
Extraction 2 launched in June 2023 and picks up nine months later, tracking Rake and his team on a new mission to liberate a Georgian gangster’s family from captivity. This sequel not only earned a fresher critical reception but also ranked as the tenth most-viewed English-language movie on Netflix, gathering over 129.3 million views.
As for Extraction 3, specifics on the plot are still under wraps, but Idris Elba is slated to reprise his role as Alcott/The Man in the Suit. His mysterious character, introduced in the second film, offers Rake and Nik a way to escape the prison, but the two have to do a mission for him in return. Speaking with Collider earlier this year, Elba hinted at his return in Extraction 3 by noting his character has “some unfinished business” with Rake.
“I know that we have some unfinished business from Extraction 2. It hasn’t been made official yet, but I’m pretty sure it will be,” said the Fast & Furious star.
With Sam Hargrave returning to direct and the narrative groundwork laid out for another intense chapter, Extraction 3 is shaping up to continue the high-octane legacy of its predecessors. Fans of the franchise can catch up with the first two Extraction films on Netflix, as they await the next installment of Tyler Rake’s thrilling exploits.
