Marvel fans are always eager to see the original six Avengers reunite on the big screen. However, Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner has mixed feelings about the idea.
In an in-depth interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Renner discussed the likelihood of reuniting with Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, and Scarlett Johansson for a new MCU movie, despite the deaths of Downey and Johansson’s characters in Avengers: Endgame.
Jeremy Renner’s Thoughts on a Potential Reunion
In his interview, Renner pondered the narrative and emotional implications of reuniting the original Avengers.
“Maybe if enough time goes by, right? I think it kind of has at this point, but also what is the point of the narrative, the story? These are beloved characters. We did spend 23 films together essentially as a collective,” Renner said.
He questioned the purpose of bringing the characters back: “To start it up, what is the reason? What is the story? Do you have to do more after that? How do you ever resolve this?”
He continued, “When is it ever gonna feel like, ‘Everyone gets their little bow, it feels great, nobody died!’ What happens here? There are no consequences because it’s like, in the Multiverse here, your death doesn’t mean anything. I’ve got feelings about it. I think everybody does. I think the guys that died have feelings about it.”
Despite these concerns, Renner expressed his willingness to return as Clint Barton/Hawkeye.
“I think it’d be great. It’d be awesome. I’d love to be with everyone again. But, you know, do they bring back just the OG or they bring back 60 people,” he added.
The Original Avengers’ Last Stand in Endgame
The Avengers first assembled in 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers, featuring Iron Man (Downey), Captain America (Evans), Hulk (Ruffalo), Thor (Hemsworth), Black Widow (Johansson), and Hawkeye (Renner).
This original lineup reunited for Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015 and again in Avengers: Endgame in 2019. After Thanos snapped away half of all life at the end of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the original six teamed up for a time heist to reverse the damage.
This mission led to Black Widow sacrificing herself for the Soul Stone, marking the last time all six heroes appeared together.
The Future of the Avengers in the MCU
Currently, the Avengers are disassembled in the MCU, but a new team is expected to form before the release of the fifth movie, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, in 2026.
The sixth Avengers movie, Avengers: Secret Wars, will follow in 2027, concluding The Multiverse Saga.
All four Avengers movies are available to stream on Disney+.
