Summary:

  • Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been a big success, and Chris Pratt is excited about the sequel and more Nintendo films.
  • Although different studios make it hard to create a fully connected universe, fans hope for crossovers like a Super Smash Bros. movie featuring Mario, Link, and other characters.

Nintendo’s foray into a cinematic universe has already seen a promising start with the box office success of Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Despite mixed reviews from critics, the movie resonated with fans, largely due to its nostalgic nods to classic games from the franchise. This positive fan reception has set high expectations for its sequel.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Chris Pratt shared his excitement about the sequel and the broader potential for Nintendo’s cinematic universe.

“I was such a Nintendo head growing up, so just thinking about how everything from Legend of Zelda to the entire Nintendo cinematic universe could be created and what that could look like for all of these characters that I love,” Pratt said. “I mean, there’s really no limit.”

The finale and post-credits scene of The Super Mario Bros. Movie introduced Yoshi, suggesting that the sequel could incorporate elements from other games like Yoshi’s Island. This approach indicates that Illumination is keen on leveraging the strong fanbase to expand the series further, although there’s a risk of focusing more on quantity over quality.

Broader Horizons: Other Ventures and Potential Challenges

Nintendo’s cinematic ambitions don’t stop with Mario. They are also exploring other iconic franchises, such as The Legend of Zelda, which is currently under development by director Wes Ball, with production by Avi Arad and Sony Pictures.

Though details are sparse, the project has attracted interest from various stars, including Patricia Summersett of Breath of the Wild, Hunter Schafer from Euphoria, and Walker Scobell of Percy Jackson.

However, the diversity of filming formats and the involvement of different studios might hinder the creation of a fully integrated Nintendo cinematic universe. Fans remain hopeful, though, for a potential Super Smash Bros. movie that could bring together beloved characters like Mario and Link in one epic crossover.

Despite the logistical challenges, the enthusiasm for a more interconnected Nintendo universe continues to grow, driven by both nostalgia and the possibility of seeing favorite characters unite on the big screen.
