What can I say except you’re welcome! Moana of Motunui is setting sail again for a new exciting adventure!
On Wednesday, Disney Animation unveiled the latest trailer for Moana 2, with Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson reprising their beloved roles as Moana and Maui. Set three years after Moana’s initial voyage, the new film follows her as she explores uncharted waters (literally!) far beyond the shores of Motunui. Let’s check it out:
Accompanied by the return of Maui and a quirky crew of new and old faces, Moana plunges into perilous seas again for an adventure that promises to be her most challenging yet.
The new trailer doesn’t have many dialogues, but it does reveal some exciting details for the much-anticipated sequel. In the 1-minute 47-second video, Moana, now all grown up, once again heeds the call from her ancestors to set sail again. Again, the protagonist leaves behind her home, family, and her newborn little sister, a brand-new addition to the movie, to fulfill her destiny.
Joining Moana on the voyage is the comedic chicken Heihei, who traveled with the daughter’s chief in the first movie, and Pua the Pig, a new member of the crew. Dwayne Johnson’s Maui didn’t appear until the last scene of the trailer, landing gloriously on Moana’s boat after shapeshifting into a shark and an eagle. The demigod then has a chat with Moana about Heihei and Pua the Pig, who he refers to as “seafood.”
Disney Animation announced the Moana sequel back in February, which surprised many fans. A live-action adaptation is also currently in development, with Dwayne Johnson portraying the real-life Maui as well.
Prior to the new trailer, the House of Mouse also released a brand-new poster teasing Maui’s return, with his magic hook planted on the sand, and Moana standing from afar, blowing into a conch shell.
David Derrick Jr. steps into the director’s chair for Moana 2, after having been involved in several of Disney’s animated projects. The music promises to be enchanting with Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa’i returning to handle the score and songs. Additionally, Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear of The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical fame will join as songwriters, taking the baton from Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The 23-year-old Cravalho confirmed her return as the voice of Moana in an Instagram post in February, alongside Dwayne Johnson as Maui. However, the 23-year-old actress won’t return for the live-action movie.
Moana 2 is set to sail into theaters on November 27, 2024, promising another epic chapter for one of Disney’s newest princesses.
