Summary:

  • Bill Skarsgård will reprise his role as Pennywise in the IT prequel series “Welcome to Derry,” set to release on Max in 2025, and will also serve as an executive producer.
  • His return is crucial for continuity, allowing the series to explore Pennywise’s origins further while avoiding potential recasting controversies.

Welcome to Derry is set to feature the return of Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise. The actor, known for his roles in Barbarian, Boy Kills World, and The Crow, portrayed the terrifying antagonist in the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King’s It and its sequel It: Chapter Two.

Pennywise, a shapeshifting alien entity, is best known for taking the form of a sinister clown. The upcoming series, currently operating under a working title, is a Max production slated for release in 2025 and will serve as a prequel to the original films.

According to Deadline, Bill Skarsgård will not only reprise his iconic role as Pennywise but also take on the role of executive producer alongside Jason Fuchs, Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Roy Lee. This continues Skarsgård’s recent trend of taking on more behind-the-scenes responsibilities in his genre projects, as seen with Barbarian and Boy Kills World.

Bill Skarsgård’s Return is Crucial for Welcome to Derry

Bill Skarsgård Returns As Pennywise In IT Prequel Series "Welcome To Derry"

Having the original It star join the Welcome to Derry cast is a significant advantage for the horror show for several reasons. One key reason is that the entity’s age allows for the return of an original cast member from the 2017 movie.

The series is set in the 1960s, long before the events of the original film, which took place in 1989 after a prologue set in 1988. None of the original movie’s other central characters would be alive during the prequel’s timeline, as they were born in the mid-1970s.

Another crucial factor is that Skarsgård’s return enables the show to explore Pennywise’s origin, which was touched upon in It: Chapter Two.

Although the exact origin shown may have been a fabrication by the monster, it featured an old photograph of a clown played by Skarsgård without makeup. If the show chooses to delve deeper into this storyline, having Skarsgård on board is essential for continuity.

Additionally, bringing back Skarsgård helps Welcome to Derry avoid a significant casting challenge. Finding an actor to portray Pennywise in the 2017 It after Tim Curry‘s iconic performance in the 1990 miniseries was already a daunting task.

Casting a third actor for the role so soon after Skarsgård might have been risky, potentially leading to recasting controversies. By retaining Skarsgård, the series maintains continuity and avoids any potential backlash.
