Bernthal has always been vocal about his deep connection with the iconic anti-hero role in Marvel. In a chat with Collider recently, he shared, ““I think there’s a reason why that character has resonated as deeply and strongly as he has in the hearts and minds of comic book fans and first responders and people in the military and people all over the globe. I think there’s a little bit of Frank Castle in everybody. He exists very strongly inside me and I care about that character deeply.”
The actor also talked about Castle’s reemergence in Daredevil: Born Again, determined to “do it right: “I also know that it’s absolutely essential that if we do it, we do it right, and we have real sacred integrity to the source material and to what is at the core of Frank. I’m gonna do my absolute best to make sure that, if and when we do it, we do it right.”
Word on the street was that Bernthal had some initial reservations about the series’ direction, leading to a significant script overhaul. Post-rewrite, the show is slated to weave in more ties to the beloved Marvel series on Netflix, like “Daredevil” and “The Punisher.
The upcoming series will also see some expected comebacks of certain characters, with Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson reprising their roles as Karen Page and Foggy Nelson, alongside Wilson Bethel’s return as Bullseye. Headlining the cast are, of course, Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio, back as Daredevil and Kingpin respectively, reigniting their iconic rivalry.
The epic battle between Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fisk/Kingpin is set to continue in “Daredevil: Born Again,” picking up from where their stories intertwined in the MCU through shows and movies like “Hawkeye,” “Echo,” and “She-Hulk.” It is reported that for the upcoming series, D’Onofrio’s Kingpin is on a power trip, aiming for the mayor’s seat in New York City, as it was hinted at the end of “Echo.
Before gearing up for his return in “Daredevil: Born Again,” Bernthal will first take another ride as Braxton Wolff in “The Accountant 2,” diving back into Christian Wolff’s (Ben Affleck) complex world of danger and day-job accounting. Production is underway, though the official release date is yet to be announced.
