Reflecting on the harsh reception the prequels received, Portman revealed in an interview with TotalFilm that she found it challenging to cope with the negativity at the time. She said:

“I think obviously with the reaction to them when they came out, being as harsh as it was – it was hard.”

Despite the initial criticism, the prequels have grown in popularity among fans, who now regard them more fondly within the Star Wars franchise.

Having started her acting career as a child with her debut in 1994’s Léon: The Professional, Portman’s role in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace significantly boosted her career.

During the interview, she expressed gratitude for being part of the iconic franchise and mentioned how she is still approached by fans who share the series with their children. She stated:

“I see it as an extraordinarily lucky thing to have been part of. I know how meaningful it is for people. And, every day, still, people are like, ‘I just watched it with my kids.’ To be part of something like that that’s part of that cultural mythology, and part of people’s childhoods, in such a vibrant way, is so, so lucky.”

The Phantom Menace, once the most criticized film in the Star Wars saga, has seen a resurgence in popularity. Recently re-released to celebrate its 25th anniversary, it has become a beloved installment and the most streamed Star Wars movie on Disney+.

The Star Wars franchise continues to thrive, with new projects in the pipeline. The Acolyte, the latest series, is now streaming on Disney+, and several new films are in development.

Daisy Ridley is set to return as Rey in a new movie, and Pedro Pascal’s Mandalorian will also be stepping into a standalone film alongside Grogu.
