Director Louis Leterrier recently dropped some significant news about the next chapter in Vin Diesel‘s Fast & Furious saga. One of these updates may frustate the franchise’s fans a little bit.
After stepping in to replace Justin Lin, who left due to creative differences, in April 2022 during the production of Fast X, Leterrier is now gearing up for the saga’s grand finale, Fast & Furious 11. This upcoming installment has fans eagerly waiting as it marks the culmination of a franchise that has been a staple in action cinema for over two decades.
In a chat with Collider at CCXP MX, Leterrier disclosed that filming for Fast & Furious 11 is set to kick off early next year. Originally slated for an April 2025 release, the film has been rescheduled to debut in 2026, aligning with the 25th anniversary of the franchise’s inception in 2001.
“It’s happening very, very soon. I’m able to shoot a little horror movie this summer. I’m finishing my horror movie on September 15th, and I start [pre-production on] Fast on September 16th. It’s filming early next year, and it’s coming out in 2026, which will be exactly to the day, 25 years since the first one came out,” the director explained.
Moreover, Leterrier hinted at a nostalgic return to the roots for the final movie, planning to set it in Los Angeles where the original The Fast and the Furious unfolded. “That’s what we wanna do. We wanna bring it back home, and still have a great big journey to tell,” he added.
Vin Diesel himself has been vocal about the project, describing the upcoming film as not only a grand finale but also “a celebration of the incredible family we’ve built together.” Never change, Diesel.
Before diving into Fast & Furious 11, Leterrier is wrapping up his first horror film, 11817, scripted by Matthew Robinson. This thriller revolves around a family locked inside their home by mysterious forces, struggling to survive as their supplies dwindle. Leterrier is also the producer of the movie.
Fast X, the tenth installment of the extensive high-speed franchise, introduces a formidable new antagonist, Dante, portrayed by Jason Momoa. Dante, the son of a cartel boss killed by Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson)in Fast Five, launches a vendetta against Dom’s family, targeting Dom’s son as a way of revenge. While Dom successfully protects Brian Marcos, his personal feud with Dante is far from over, and will be carried onto the eleventh title.
Currently at its tenth installment, the Fast and Furious saga is currently one of the most lengthy franchises in Hollywood’s history. Though the quality of each movie has reportedly regressed, the recent titles still raked an enormous amount at the box office, making fans wonder how long Vin Diesel will keep the engine running for The Fast Saga.
