Summary:

  • Simon Pegg revealed he and director Edgar Wright would not participate in a reboot of “Shaun of the Dead,” emphasizing the personal nature of the original film and criticizing reboots as cynical and exploitative.
  • Despite their love for sequels, Pegg and Wright prefer to challenge audiences with new stories rather than revisiting past successes.

Simon Pegg recently shared his thoughts on a potential reboot of Shaun of the Dead, the 2004 zombie comedy film that remains one of the highlights of his career.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote The Boys Season 4, Pegg revealed why he and director Edgar Wright would not participate in a reboot, despite Universal Pictures holding the rights.

Pegg, known for his role in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, expressed strong opposition to a reboot.

He explained, “The whole thing with Shaun’s mum, the stepdad, I had a problematic relationship with my stepfather. It was Edgar’s idea to kill the mum.”

“I couldn’t believe it when he said that, but it was the best decision. There’s so much of our own heart and soul in that film. If someone was to reboot it, it would be a cynical and exploitative exercise.”

Fans took to social media to share their thoughts on Pegg’s stance. One user on Discussing Film’s post on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “Simon knows constant reboots are killing classic movies and Hollywood as a whole.”

Many praised the decision to avoid a reboot. “I’m so glad he’s not on board. Not everything needs to be rebooted,” one user commented. Another added, “Don’t reboot that! It was fantastic! Leave it alone!”

Others emphasized the uniqueness of the original team’s contribution.

“Without the original team’s heart and soul, it would be like trying to recreate a classic dish without the secret ingredient. It might look the same, but it’ll never taste as good,” one fan noted. Many echoed this sentiment, arguing that a remake would lack the authenticity and creativity of the original.

“Why would someone even think this? Terrible. Hate these reboots. Zero creativity or original thought,” another user stated.

In the interview, Pegg also discussed the possibility of another collaboration with Wright. Despite his love for sequels, Pegg emphasized that some stories are best left as they are.

“He becomes a new person, but we’d have to then dismantle that in order to give him a new arc. Why? The best thing we can do with cinema is to challenge people and get them to see things they haven’t seen before and experience new things. Entertainment is the most overrated function of art.”

Pegg highlighted the personal nature of Shaun of the Dead and its enduring fanbase, comparing it to Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead, which he disliked because it was a remake of George Romero’s classic.

When asked about future projects with Wright, Pegg acknowledged the challenges they face in finding time to collaborate.

“The biggest challenge that we have right now is finding a moment to get together and spend six, seven weeks to get our first draft out and come up with the idea.”

“But we’re constantly looking for that. Edgar came over to my house last year and stayed for a week, and we just sort of talked about films and what we want to do next.”

Simon Pegg currently stars as Hugh Campbell Sr. in the fourth season of The Boys on Amazon Prime Video.

He will also reprise his role as Benji Dunn in the upcoming eighth installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, set to hit theaters on May 23, 2025.
