Summary:

  • Deadpool’s R-rated humor enters MCU: A line referencing “pegging” surprises some at Marvel.
  • Feige explains the term, highlighting challenges of integrating Deadpool.
  • “Deadpool & Wolverine” offers a different MCU experience with a potential release strategy shift.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige found himself in an unexpected position recently: explaining a sexual term to colleagues. The culprit? None other than Deadpool.

As Deadpool makes his grand entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) alongside Wolverine in their upcoming film, Feige revealed to Variety that he had to explain the meaning of “pegging” to some Marvel employees unfamiliar with the term.

“Is that supposed to be scary?” Wade Wilson says to a soldier carrying an electric baton. “Pegging isn’t new for me, friendo, but it is for Disney.”

The inclusion of Deadpool, known for his crass humor and violence, signifies a significant shift for the MCU. While previous films have dabbled in mature themes, Deadpool pushes the boundaries further with its R-rating. A line in the trailer referencing “pegging” exemplifies this shift in tone.

Feige, though familiar with the term from the previous Deadpool films, acknowledged that not everyone at Marvel was as knowledgeable: “‘I know what pegging is — it’s in the first Deadpool movie,'” Feige said. “But there were people I work with who didn’t know what it was. I had to explain it to them.”

This incident highlights the challenges of integrating the “Merc with a Mouth” into the MCU. Fans are curious to see how far Feige and Disney are willing to go in terms of content. Another example is a trailer gag where Deadpool suggests cocaine is off-limits, though Feige clarifies he wasn’t that strict about content.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” marks a significant departure for the MCU. Director Shawn Levy describes it as “not like any MCU movie,” potentially a much-needed change considering it’s the only MCU film releasing in 2024. Marvel is revamping its release strategy after a recent slowdown, aiming for a more organized schedule of two to three movies and two shows per year.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” arrives in theaters July 26, 2024.
