We return to Westview in the fifth episode of Disney’s WandaVision, where Wanda and Vision are parenting their twins. However, the Westview anomaly’s prospects are bleak. Vision’s doubts about Westview’s actuality become greater, while Wanda’s attention appears to wane.
Following the startling discoveries of the 4th episode, in which we learned that “it’s all Wanda,” Episode 5 begins in the twisted world of Westview, where it has become the 1980s. Nevertheless, the episode concludes with Quicksilver of the X-Men saga arriving at Wanda’s door and announcing himself as Wanda’s brother.
Audiences, however, know that the man interrupting Vision’s questioning of Wanda in Westview’s realm is not Wanda’s twin, Pietro. At least not one from Avengers: Age of Ultron, where we met Wanda’s brother for the first time. It was also his final appearance in the film because Pietro was murdered by Ultron. So, what is the meaning of this cross-over? And how will it determine the fate of our only speedster in the MCU?
#1 Who is Pietro?
Pietro and Wanda Maximoff first appeared in Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s post-credits. The twins were victims of a HYDRA laboratory led by Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, where they received the superpowers of Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch.
After receiving their abilities, the siblings join Team Ultron to attack Tony Stark, or Iron Man, whom they blame for their parent’s deaths. They soon understand Ultron’s plans to destroy everyone on the Earth and end up changing sides. Pietro Maximoff died while attempting to defend the people of Sokovia before the ending of the movie, and a heartbroken Wanda finds a new home in the Avengers.
#2 Who Rang Wanda’s Doorbell in Ep. 5?
Evan Peters, who portrayed Quicksilver, aka Peter (not Pietro) Maximoff, in the X-Men films, is the silver-haired man outside Wanda’s residence in Episode 5. Confused? Peters played a different variation of Pietro Maximoff, called Quicksilver, in Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, while Aaron Taylor-Johnson featured the very same role in Marvel’s Age of Ultron.
When Days of Future Past aired in 2014, Marvel & X-Men were managed by different film companies. X-Men figures were not permitted to appear in Disney or Marvel films. They also were forbidden from using the term “mutant” and forced to substitute with “enhanced.”
#3 Is Pietro Alive?
Wanda is surprised when she finds X- Men’s Quicksilver at her doorstep. Wanda had been in charge of all people entering and leaving Westview up till this time. When Peter reveals himself as Wanda’s sibling, she quickly responds with “Pietro,” as if she can’t tell the difference.
But, although Wanda may have forgotten all memory of what happened before the event in WandaVision, we do not. That man at the end of Episode 5 is not Pietro. So, as far as we are aware, nothing has changed: Pietro is still very much dead. But as the X-Quicksilver, Peter is indeed alive.
#4 Why is Pietro/Peter on WandaVision?
Wanda doesn’t exist as a character in the X-Men reality, which is why Peter’s existence in WandaVision appears to lead to just one probability – the multiverse. In phase 4, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is creating the groundwork for a multiverse, with various characters likely to travel across universes.
Amongst the most common theories right now is that Peter’s reappearance is somehow connected to the arrival of the main evil guy, Mephisto. Wanda, according to this hypothesis, is being held hostage by Mephisto for her to give birth to mutant brothers Billy & Tommy.
