Joker: Folie à Deux Faces Major Box Office Disappointment

Summary:

  • Joker: Folie à Deux opened below expectations, earning approximately $39 million domestically against a production budget of over $190 million, marking one of the lowest openings for a sequel in the DC franchise.
  • The film’s musical format failed to attract fans of the original, leading to a disappointing reception and poor box office performance.

Warner Bros. is facing a significant setback with Joker: Folie à Deux, which debuted this weekend with a disappointing $39 million, far below the $190 million production budget and even lower than the previously estimated $47 million. The film managed to secure around $81.1 million globally, but its domestic performance marks one of the lowest openings for a major comic-book sequel, especially when compared to the first Joker, which opened at $96.2 million in 2019.

The weekend box office results suggest a lack of interest, especially among fans of the original film. Audiences reported a D CinemaScore, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction. The film’s heavy marketing as a musical, a stark contrast to the gritty tone of the original, likely deterred fans who preferred the darker narrative style.

Interestingly, Joker: Folie à Deux was not the lowest opening for a DC movie, which remains Jonah Hex at $5.3 million. Friday’s earnings were $20 million, which dropped 45% to $11.4 million on Saturday, indicating significant front-loading.

Concerns arose before the premiere due to limited promotional appearances by stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, which hinted at underlying issues. Critics were mixed, with a 62% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and marketing strategies have been questioned, especially after the film’s mixed reception at the Venice Film Festival.

As for its production costs, the budget reportedly soared from the original Joker’s $70 million to over $190 million, prompting questions about financial oversight during production. Warner Bros. has historically granted directors significant creative freedom, but this may lead to concerns over future projects, particularly with upcoming high-budget films from directors like Paul Thomas Anderson and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

While some speculate the film’s failure signals a decline in theatrical attendance post-COVID, overall box office performance has been recovering, with a reduction in deficit compared to previous years. However, the Joker franchise may need to take a break before reappearing on screen.Joker: Folie à Deux Faces Major Box Office Disappointment

In other box office news, Lionsgate‘s White Bird opened poorly with $1.53 million, marking a troubling trend for the studio. Meanwhile, YouTube content creators Sam and Colby achieved notable success with their film Sam and Colby: The Legends of Paranormal, performing well against traditional releases.

Overall, the weekend’s box office total was projected to be around $91.2 million, reflecting a slight decline from the previous weekend but still indicating ongoing audience interest in cinema.
