The Dallas Cowboys are hoping to see a familiar face back on the field this Sunday. All-Pro cornerback DaRon Bland, who’s been out with a foot injury since training camp, is looking to make his season debut against the Detroit Lions in Week 6.
Over the last few seasons, the Cowboys’ defense has been known for creating turnovers, and Bland played a big role in that success. Last year, he led the NFL with nine interceptions, including an impressive five that he returned for touchdowns. However, Dallas hasn’t been as strong at forcing turnovers this season, with just five takeaways through their first five games.
Bland’s return could give the Cowboys a much-needed boost, especially as they prepare to face the 3-1 Lions, one of the league’s top offensive teams. The Cowboys activated Bland’s 21-day practice window earlier this week, and he’s been practicing fully on both Wednesday and Thursday. While he admits he needs to shake off some rust after being out for so long, Bland says he’s feeling ready.
“It was tough being away, but it feels good now,” Bland said. “I feel like I haven’t played in a long time, so I’m excited to be back out there.”
Head coach Mike McCarthy said Thursday’s padded practice would be a good test for Bland, and his teammates have already noticed his impact in practice. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and quarterback Dak Prescott both praised Bland for his playmaking ability.
“He’s back,” Lamb said. “I’m excited to see him out there again.”
Prescott added, “We definitely miss what he brings to the field. He’s already making plays in practice, and we just want him back playing at his best.”
Bland is also eager to finally play alongside fellow cornerbacks Trevon Diggs and Jourdan Lewis. “I can’t wait,” Bland said. “It’s going to feel great playing with both of them for the first time.”
As for whether he’ll play this Sunday, Bland is hopeful but keeping things open. “I feel pretty good, but time will tell. We’ll see,” he said with a smile.
Whether Bland suits up against the Lions or waits until after the Cowboys’ Week 7 bye, his return will be a big help to a defense dealing with injuries. He’s been practicing against top talent like CeeDee Lamb, which he believes has prepared him for whoever he faces.
The Cowboys will monitor how Bland’s foot holds up in the coming days before making a final decision. If he’s able to play in Week 6, he’ll be up against a tough Lions offense, but Bland is ready to get back on the field and make an impact.
“We’ll see what happens,” Bland said with a grin. “Time will tell.”
