After a week off, the Dallas Cowboys are set to face a familiar foe in the San Francisco 49ers. Coming off three straight losses to the 49ers, including playoff defeats in 2021 and 2022, Dallas enters Week 8 with a must-win mentality, currently at 3-3 and trailing in the NFC East standings. Here are three key strategies Dallas can focus on to finally break San Francisco’s winning streak and get back on track this season.
#1. Limit Big Plays on Defense
The 49ers have thrived on explosive plays, even amid injury struggles. Despite the absence of top offensive weapons, San Francisco leads the league with 26 plays of 20 yards or more and ranks second with six plays of 40-plus yards. Containing these big moments will be crucial for Dallas. The Cowboys’ defense, which has allowed 356.5 yards per game, will need to step up and contain the 49ers’ offense to keep the score manageable.
#2. Stop the Run – Especially Jordan Mason
With star running back Christian McCaffrey sidelined, Jordan Mason has filled the role admirably. Ranking second in the league behind Derrick Henry with 667 rushing yards, Mason has averaged 5.2 yards per carry. Given Dallas’ struggles with the run this season, allowing 143.2 yards per game and the second-most rushing touchdowns (10), shutting down Mason could make or break this matchup.
#3. Win the Battle in the Trenches
All-Pro pass rusher Nick Bosa is a key threat for Dallas’ offensive line, which has undergone adjustments in recent weeks. Rookie Tyler Guyton, filling in at left tackle, has held his own but will need support. On the defensive side, linebacker Micah Parsons is expected to return, which will be essential for applying pressure on San Francisco’s offensive line. Disrupting their timing and rhythm is critical, as Dallas looks to slow down San Francisco’s high-powered offense.
As they prepare for this prime-time showdown, the Cowboys are well aware of the challenge ahead. Owner Jerry Jones voiced his confidence, despite injuries and setbacks, saying, “You have to have the depth to overcome those injuries or at least be competitive.” Whether Dallas can execute in these three areas will likely determine if they can break the streak and regain momentum in a tight NFC East race.
Kickoff between the Cowboys and 49ers is set for 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC, with live streaming on Peacock.
