A Curious Husband Licks Baby Formula To Satisfy Wonder And Leaves His Wife Furious Over Tiny Drops

A young father finally gave in to years of wondering about baby formula and licked a few drops from his wrist while testing the temperature. The vile taste hit hard, triggering loud gagging just as his wife entered the kitchen. What started as innocent curiosity exploded into sharp accusations of odd behavior and stealing precious food straight from their toddler’s mouth.

Hours later, during the first family visit to the in-laws, the wife shared the incident, only for the mother-in-law to unleash a shocking, side-splitting story about the grandfather once wanting to taste breast milk directly. Laughter erupted from everyone except the wife, who remained visibly upset, turning a small mishap into lingering tension amid the joyful reunion.

A dad tasted baby formula out of curiosity, sparking a marital spat over a minor act.

Not the actual photo.

'AITA for tasting my baby's formula?'

So this morning curiosity got the best of me and my wife is now p__sed

so I wanted to come here for some different perspective to see if what I did was really an a__hole move? All this btw, happened at like 6 a.m.

So we (me-25m wife-25f) have a baby girl (13mo) who had been drinking formula,

not so much now since she's 13mo and it's recommended by our doctor that we can start using other means to give her the nutrients she needs.

This morning, my wife was prepping a bottle of baby formula since we were going to visit her family in the next state over

(I took a couple of PTO days since I wanted to be there for our daughters first time meeting wife's family about a 4 hour drive) -

I've always been curious as to what formula tasted like, don't know why, but I've always been a pretty curious dude.

So I picked up the bottle and did the thing you have to do to test the temp by putting some on my wrist, but instead of just wiping it...

That stuff is like really gross, if you hadn't tasted it before I honestly wouldn't even recommend it.

My wife comes into the kitchen to see what all the commotion was and asked me what was up (since I was retching really hard - seriously, it's gross).

I told her that I tasted some formula and it was like next levels gross and then commented that it's wild that daughter just laps this stuff up.

Well, my wife became pretty annoyed at me and asked why would I just drink some of my daughter's food,

I told her it was just like a little taste and not like I downed a whole bottle, but she said it's weird and that my curiosity will end up...

(won't deny that as I've been in some pretty vicarious situations due to this curiosity)

and called me an a__hole for "taking food from daughters mouth" (even though those few drops would've been wiped away anyways? -

didn't say that as I didn't want to further argue - but did tell here exactly how I tasted the formula)

We got to my in-laws place maybe an hour ago - after saying our hellos and letting the grandparents meet their new granddaughter,

my wife tells told her mom what I did earlier in the AM - to which MIL (bless her soul) said that it was normal to be curious

and it's not weird that I tasted a little of the formula - and then said "it's not like your father who wanted to taste the source and I breastfed...

which made me burst out laughing and FIL just had a grin and wife was just standing there shook.

My wife still thinks I'm TA and I'm currently outside with FIL as he grills typing this, but I wanted to know - AITA?

The Redditor, a 25-year-old dad, was simply checking the bottle’s temperature on his wrist during a early-morning prep for a road trip to visit in-laws. Instead of wiping off the drops, he licked them and instantly regretted it, describing the formula as intensely unpalatable.

His wife viewed it as odd and wasteful, even though only a tiny amount was involved, leading to lingering frustration that carried over to sharing the story with her family.

From one perspective, the dad’s action stems from natural inquisitiveness, common among parents eager to understand their child’s world. Many caregivers admit to wondering about formula’s flavor, and his minimal taste didn’t impact the baby’s supply.

Nonetheless, the wife’s reaction reflects heightened sensitivity during early parenthood, where every resource feels precious amid sleep deprivation and travel stress.

This minor incident touches on broader family dynamics in new parenthood, where small actions can amplify due to exhaustion and shifting roles. Postpartum periods often bring increased irritability or overreactions, as hormonal changes and lifestyle adjustments strain partnerships.

According to experts, lack of sleep and role changes can intensify relational stress, resurfacing communication patterns more frequently.

Broadening out, parental curiosity about baby products is widespread, with many caregivers sampling foods to check suitability. Pediatric guidelines emphasize testing food temperatures for safety, often involving a quick taste to ensure it’s not too hot.

While no large-scale statistics track formula tasting specifically, parent forums and experiences suggest it’s a relatable quirk, especially for first-time families transitioning from formula.

Psychologist insights highlight how postpartum stress can lead to heightened responses. As noted in a study on postpartum couples’ perceptions, “Recent reviews indicate that sleep disturbance may threaten the stability of relationship satisfaction among non-postpartum, as well as postpartum couples.”

This relevance here? The early-morning timing and road trip likely compounded fatigue, turning a non-issue into friction.

Neutral advice leans toward open chats: acknowledging curiosity as harmless while validating protective feelings fosters understanding. Couples might benefit from checking in on underlying stresses, like travel or family visits.

Ultimately, these blips strengthen bonds when met with humor, like the mother-in-law’s witty deflection.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

Some people judge NTA, viewing tasting baby formula as normal curiosity and the wife’s reaction as an overreaction.

[Reddit User] − NTA. your wife is weirdly upset by that. most married men taste their own wife’s actual milk. it’s totally normal lol.

ttoastii81 − NTA - I am in tears at what your MIL said - she sounds cool.

And yea, I'd say it's pretty normal to want to taste the formula - although I've never done it, and will take your word for it that it's gross.

Substantial-Fox-4905 − NTA. This seems like a massive overreaction on her part because your curiosity here was fairly normal and safe.

Just wait till you try those jars of premade puree toddler food.

curiousbelgian − NTA. Curiosity is healthy!

Others judge NTA as well, suggesting the wife’s extreme response indicates underlying stress or issues.

phrygianhalfcad − NTA. Sounds like something else was on your wife’s mind and she was just looking for something to be pissed off about.

Acid_Intimacy − NTA. Is everything okay with your wife? She sounds like she’s picking a fight -

it’s possible something else is upsetting her that she’s unable to express, so she’s misdirecting it to harmless things.

Might be worth giving her an opportunity to relax and unwind, and then have a proper chat.

Some people judge NTA or NAH, noting parents commonly taste baby food and questioning if more context is missing.

SamSpayedPI − I thought you were going to say you had tried it from the bottle, so the whole thing had to be tossed as no longer sterile, but that...

It's odd your wife accused you of "taking food from your daughter's mouth" since you only licked what would have been wasted anyway.

NTA at all. I actually find it strange if someone wouldn't taste something before feeding it to their baby.

snewton_8 − NAH There has to be more to this story.

Every mom I've ever known (my wife and at least 100 others) have tasted the food they feed their kids, including their b__ast milk.

Is it possible she is dealing with some stress you're not aware of? That was an extreme response to a non-issue.

WebbieVanderquack − NTA, although if you've "been in some pretty vicarious situations due to this curiosity" (assuming you mean precarious) then your wife may have a point,

even if she overreacted about the formula. It was just like a little taste... few drops.

You were "retching really hard" after a few drops of baby formula? Dude.

Some people judge NTA while praising the in-laws’ humorous reaction.

Independent_Sir9565 − NTA at all, your MIL sounds like a riot with a good sense of humor,

same with your FIL and the s__t eating grin he has from her joke. I’d love to have a beer with them

In the end, this Redditor’s gag-inducing taste test reminds us that parenthood is packed with quirky, relatable moments that test patience but often end in laughs, thanks to savvy in-laws.
