A Customer Berated His Russian Coworker, So the Manager Gave Him Exactly What He Asked For: 250 Packets of Ranch

Some fast-food customers get upset when their order isn’t perfect.

Others seem determined to turn a missing side item into an international incident.

In 2013, one fast-food manager encountered the second kind.

The manager was working his usual closing shift, getting a head start on inventory before the restaurant shut down for the night. Everything was routine until one of his employees, a young man named John, suddenly appeared in the office and told him to put on his headset.

“You need to hear this.”

John was one of the best employees in the building. He worked quickly, treated customers well, and almost never caused problems.

Unfortunately, one customer had decided that John’s accent made him an appropriate target.

What followed involved a missing baked potato, a bag containing roughly 250 packets of ranch dressing, an extremely unhappy customer, and eventually a police officer.

A Customer Berated His Russian Coworker, So the Manager Gave Him Exactly What He Asked For: 250 Packets of Ranch

Here’s how a simple fast-food order went completely off the rails.

'too much ranch dressing?'

this happened in 2013 but i still laugh when i think about it so i thought id share.

i used to be a fastfood manager. every night id handle all the inventory. i liked to get an early jump on it so id start roughly 30 minutes to...

one night i was counting inventory and getting ready to place the weeks orders and my grill guy runs back to the office, taps his headset and says "you need...

this was odd because the person i had on drivethru was this kid named john. john was an adopted kid from russia and he had a thick russian accent, but...

he worked hard, he worked fast, and he was the friendliest person id ever met. i never had issues on his shifts.

i put my headset on and i hear this man just absolutely berating john. hes telling him to get out of the country, raving about immigration, calling him slurs saying...

so i jump in. "hi sir what seems to be the problem?". "are you the manager?". "i am.

can you fill me in on whats upsetting you tonight?". "well this LAZY MEXICAN is refusing to sell me a baked potato when i know you have them"

"sir im sorry we are out of baked potatoes for the night. is there anything else i can get for you?". "thats b__lshit! make more then!"

"sir the baked potatoes take 4 hours to cook and we close in 10 minutes. unfortunately we cant predict how many potatoes will be ordered and it looks like someone...

is there something else i can get you?". "you should be better prepared because this is fcking ridiculous!". "i understand. is there anything else i can get you?". "small salad,...

"and i dont mean like 1 or two packets like you idiots always give me i mean i want lots of ranch. like i want a ton of ranch got...

now im pretty mad about the way he was talking to john, johns clearly distressed.. and i had just done inventory.

i had a whole box of ranch that i was gonna need to toss that night because it expired the next day.

i grab a large bag, and start filling it with packets of ranch. i mustve put like 250 ranch packets in there lol my kitchen was busting up.

i take his money, i hand him the bag.. "WHAT THE F__K IS THIS?". "sorry?". "why is there so much ranch?!". "sir you asked for extra ranch?".

"are you f__king kidding me?!". "did i not give you enough? i can get you some more if you want?".

"no you stupid f__king b__ch! i want a f__king refund and im not taking all this ranch". "well i cant take food back through the window, its policy. heres your...

"i cant do that, sorry sir! you have a good night though!"

i close the window and this man wouldnt leave. i tell everyone to ignore him and to just start cleaning up.

this man actually sat there for 45 minutes and at some point he called the police! a policeman shows up and i tell them "yeah this man berated my employees,...

he was arrested in our parkinglot for driving under the influence while we watched laughing. i thought he was just an angry bigot, but it turned out that he was...

The Customer Had Already Picked His Target

The manager put on his headset and immediately heard a customer berating John.

The man was ranting about immigration, telling John to leave the country and using racist slurs while accusing him of taking jobs away from “real Americans.”

John was visibly distressed.

The manager stepped in.

“Hi, sir. What seems to be the problem?”

The customer explained that the problem was apparently a baked potato.

He insisted the restaurant had them and accused John of refusing to sell him one.

The manager calmly explained that they were out for the night.

Unfortunately, that answer wasn’t good enough.

The customer demanded that they simply make more.

There was just one problem: baked potatoes took roughly four hours to cook, and the restaurant was closing in about ten minutes.

The manager explained the situation and asked whether there was anything else he could get him.

Eventually, the customer settled on a small salad.

Then came an extremely specific request.

“Extra ranch.”

The manager asked if there was anything else.

The customer made sure there was no possible misunderstanding.

He didn’t want one or two packets like the “idiots” supposedly always gave him.

He wanted lots of ranch.

A ton of ranch.

Got it.

The manager told him to pull forward.

The Manager Had Just Finished Inventory

There was a small detail the customer didn’t know.

The manager had just completed his inventory.

And sitting in the restaurant was an entire box of ranch packets that was about to become useless.

The packets were expiring the following day.

So when the customer pulled up to the window demanding “a ton” of ranch, the manager suddenly had an opportunity.

He grabbed a large bag.

Then he started filling it.

And filling it.

And filling it.

According to the manager, he eventually put roughly 250 individual ranch packets into the bag.

The kitchen staff apparently found the whole thing hilarious.

The customer had asked for lots of ranch.

The manager was going to make absolutely certain there was no ambiguity about what “lots” meant.

When the customer reached the window, the manager took his payment and handed over the food.

Then came the inevitable question.

“What the f— is this?”

The manager acted confused.

The customer wanted to know why there was so much ranch.

The manager reminded him that he had specifically asked for extra ranch.

And if he hadn’t received enough, the manager was happy to get him more.

That wasn’t the answer the customer wanted.

Suddenly, There Was Too Much Ranch

The customer demanded a refund and said he wasn’t taking all the ranch.

The manager agreed to refund him.

But there was a small problem.

The customer had already taken possession of the food.

The manager explained that restaurant policy prevented them from taking food back through the window, but he could still provide the refund.

The customer continued screaming.

He demanded that the manager take the ranch back.

The manager refused.

Not aggressively.

Not dramatically.

Just calmly.

He couldn’t take it back.

Have a good night.

Then he closed the window.

That should have been the end.

It wasn’t.

The customer refused to leave the parking lot.

For roughly 45 minutes, he sat there while the employees cleaned up around him.

Eventually, the customer called the police himself.

Which turned out to be an unusually bad decision.

The Police Arrived, and the Ranch Became Evidence

When the officer arrived, the manager explained what had happened.

The customer had verbally abused an employee, demanded an enormous amount of ranch, refused to accept the situation after receiving a refund, and then refused to leave.

There was apparently another problem, too.

The police arrested the customer in the parking lot for driving under the influence.

So the manager’s initial assessment had been incomplete.

This wasn’t merely an angry, racist customer who had completely lost his temper over a baked potato.

He was an intoxicated, angry, racist customer who apparently decided that ranch dressing was the hill he wanted to die on.

And the entire thing could have been avoided if he’d simply accepted that the restaurant was out of potatoes.

Why the Ranch Could Stay Out of the Kitchen

One detail that makes the story’s ending especially satisfying is that the ranch packets weren’t being reused after the customer had them.

That matters because food-service operations have to be careful about products that have entered a customer’s possession. The FDA Food Code, which serves as a model for retail food safety rules across the United States, generally prohibits food that has been served or sold and possessed by a customer from being offered to another customer, with limited exceptions for certain unopened, protected packaged foods.

In other words, once that gigantic bag of ranch went out the window, the restaurant wasn’t going to simply collect it later and hand those packets to somebody else.

The manager had effectively found a way to turn an otherwise expiring supply into the world’s most ridiculous condiment order.

And the customer apparently couldn’t decide whether he wanted it or didn’t.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

hkusp45css − I have never had the 'problem' of "too much free ranch dressing"

ZanteTheInfernal − Gotta love somebody calling the cops on themselves

StnMtn_ − \ "and i dont mean like 1 or two packets like you idiots always give me i mean i want lots of ranch. like i want a ton...

UntidyVenus − I love this and also have a malicious ranch story. I worked at a pizza shop that did "salads* for lunch.

All unopened. Bonus points after he sobers up and leaves jail they give him his salad and ranch dressing's back. 😁😆🤣😆😁

Bad-Briar − ...kind of a ranchy story...

Relevant-Hospital734 − That was pretty satisfying to read

zephyr911 − This is amazing. I'd have taken all that ranch home. You never know when you'll need some 😂

The_Spongebrain − I don't think you gave him enough ranch.

Sploonbabaguuse − Genuine question, but why not just cancel his order and refuse service? Is it really worth having a customer like that?

Final Thoughts

The best part of this story isn’t really the ranch.

It’s the fact that the manager didn’t allow the customer’s anger to become an excuse for mistreating John.

He stepped in when his employee was being targeted, stayed calm while the customer continued escalating, and then found the most literal possible interpretation of “I want a ton of ranch.”

The customer wanted lots of ranch.

He got lots of ranch.

Then he called the police, waited around in the parking lot, and ended up arrested for DUI.

Some customers leave with a free dessert.

This guy apparently left with a salad, enough ranch to supply a small restaurant, and a DUI arrest.

Now that’s what you call an unhappy meal.
