According to the government department Screen Queensland, a yet unannounced sequel to the 2021 blockbuster Kong vs Godzilla will shoot in Queensland, Australia. State Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said today that filming on the Legendary Pictures film, which will be the fifth in the Monsterverse saga, will begin later this year in sites around the Gold Coast and the southeast.
Kong vs Godzilla sequel of the franchise
The sequel’s plot has remained a mystery, even though Kong vs Godzilla director Adam Wingard stated last year that he would “absolutely love to continue” with the franchise. “The clear starting point we teed up (in GVK), exploring Hollow Earth, I think there is a lot more to do there. This is a pre-history of Planet Earth, where all the titans come from. We tee up some mystery in this film, things I want to see resolved and explored and pushed to the next level.”
According to Screen Queensland, the film will provide A$79.2 million ($58.6 million) to the region’s economy and generate 505 employments for local actors and crew, as well as 750 extras.
What to expect from Kong vs Godzilla sequel?
Kong vs Godzilla, a Legendary/Warner Bros. film, was previously shot in Queensland and grossed over $468 million worldwide. Before GVK, Kong Skull Island made a stop in the area in 2017. “The highly skilled crews, first-rate facilities, and unique locations make filming in Australia a great experience. The Federal government’s support has always been critical to our success in achieving a high level of filmmaking and an unparalleled audience experience.”
“The production is expected to inject more than double the $36.5 million that Godzilla Vs Kong brought to the state and is a welcome boost to our economy as we recover from the impacts of the global pandemic and southeast Queensland flooding events. These types of productions benefit our screen industry, deliver local jobs, and provide a welcome boost to our small businesses and communities in and around our production sites.”
Queensland has grown in popularity as a location for foreign productions since the launch of the Production Attraction Strategy in 2015. NBC’s Young Rock, Peacock’s Joe Vs Carole, Ron Howard‘s MGM film Thirteen Lives, Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, Netflix’s Spiderhead, and Universal’s George Clooney/Julia Roberts rom-com Ticket To Paradise are among the recent projects to shoot there. Nautilus for Disney+ is now filming, as is season two of Tim Minchin’s Foxtel series Upright.
