HBO is working on a Game of Thrones sequel series centered on Jon Snow’s ongoing adventures, with Kit Harrington set to reprise his role. When HBO premiered Game of Thrones in 2011, it turned George R.R. Martin’s bestseller, the epic A Song of Ice and Fire, into television gold. Now, it has been 3 years after the end of season 8, HBO is still eager to continue the series with other spinoffs. House of the Dragon, the first of all, will be released in August this year.

Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington, was a pivotal character during Game of Thrones’ tenure. Jon was an honorable bastard who portray a vital part in the show’s shifting plots, most remarkably when he was murdered in season 5, only to be resurrected later. At the end of season 8, Jon was exiled from Westeros for murdering Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), his romantic interest and newly-revealed aunt. Jon would join the Wildlings north of the Wall and eventually appeared to find peace.
Now it appears that the peace may not continue much longer. According to THR, HBO is now working on a Game of Thrones sequel based on Jon Snow. Though the show is still in its early stages of production, it would welcome Kit Harrington to return, if it goes through. Until now, nothing more has been disclosed about the creative crew and its members.

This might sound like a significant milestone for the developing Game of Thrones franchise. The network started developing possible spinoffs even before the conclusion of the flagship series. What makes the John Snow project important is that it is the first prospective spinoff to occur after Game of Thrones’ main timeline. Meanwhile, other things that remain in development, namely 10,000 Ships and 9 Voyages, together with House of the Dragon, are all prequels. It’s anticipated that HBO is currently working to push the timeline ahead.
This is a major development for HBO’s growing Game of Thrones franchise. Even before the flagship series came to an end, the network began working on potential offshoots. What’s notable about the Jon Snow project is that it is the first potential Game of Thrones spinoff that would take place after the series ended; everything else that is currently in the works, which includes 10,000 Ships and 9 Voyages, are prequels. However, it isn’t surprising that HBO is now looking to push the timeline forward. In spite of its tendency to murder certain characters, Game of Thrones finished with a slew of characters alive and eager to try out their own spinoffs.

Jon Snow is certainly among the best prepared characters to lead a new plot, having been exiled from Westeros in the end of GoT’s season 8. Jon’s personal experiences beyond the Wall may pave the way for far more tremendous exploration of this aspect of the world created by George R. R. Martin, and potentially lead to the presence of new creatures. Some could argue that Game of Thrones has already spent significant time beyond the Wall, and they are totally correct.
Nonetheless, because there is no need to return to the Westeros stories, this Jon Snow-led sequel may travel deeper than the previous journeys, into what lies beyond the Wall. There’s also a chance that other fan favorites, such as Tormund (Kristofer Hivju) will make cameo appearances. With the release of House of the Dragon approaching, it’s unclear how important the Game of Thrones sequel is to HBO. However, with a famous character like Jon on board, this program has an excellent potential of moving forward rapidly if the creative team can come together quickly.
