A Woman Finally Stopped Buying Her Sister’s Untouched Snacks, and Her Whole Family Called Her the Villain

Some family patterns look small from the outside until you count up the wasted years, and the wasted money. For one teenager, that pattern was a soon to be teenage sister who, for roughly three years, copied her order at every single cafe visit, took one bite, and threw the rest away.

It finally came to a head at a Tim Hortons, when she refused to order for her sister without a real answer, and the whole family blamed her for letting a hungry kid go home without a snack.

Here is how it all unfolded.

'AITAH for not ordering food and my sister went hungry?'

My sister is a picky eater but almost every single time we go out to a cafe as a family, she orders what I order and never finishes it.

I enjoy tea lattes and savoury pastries while my sister is a complete sweet tooth.

We have different tastes and I have no idea why she always copies my order, takes a bite, and ends up throwing it away.

We've wasted so much money over the years because of this. She's almost a teenager now and she's been doing this since she was about 10 years old. My parents...

Recently we went to Tim Hortons and I'm usually the one who orders for my family, but this time I went to the bathroom and my dad ordered. I came...

I asked what she ordered and my dad said she waited for me to come back so she could order. I knew what was about to happen so I told...

We were there for maybe about 10 minutes and the whole time my sister was complaining about how hungry she was and my mom kept telling me to order food...

I tried to buy her food. I asked her what she wanted and she told me she didn't know, so I told her that if she didn't tell me what...

To see if I was right about this whole ordeal, I said I might get a jalapeno pastry and she told me she wanted that too. Then I told her...

We left after that and my sister complained until we got home about how hungry she was. My mom got super mad at me for not buying her anything. I...

I've always hated that she does this but never stood my ground until now, and suddenly I'm the bad guy. The dumbest part about this is she got a snack...

My parents chewed me out for being "unreasonable". I feel like I was justified, but I might be the a__hole?

The habit had been going on since the younger sister was about ten. Every trip to a cafe followed the same script. The older sister ordered a tea latte and a savory pastry for herself. Her sister, despite being a self described sweet tooth with completely different tastes, would ask for the exact same thing, nibble once, and toss the rest. Years of this had quietly drained the family’s money, and their parents never stepped in to stop it. This time, though, the older sister happened to step away to the bathroom while their dad placed the order. When she came back, her parents had their drinks. Her sister had nothing. She had waited on purpose.

What followed was ten increasingly tense minutes. The sister complained loudly about being hungry while their mother pressured the older sibling to just order something already. The older sister tried, genuinely. She asked what her sister wanted, got only an “I don’t know,” and walked her up to the menu board to look together. Still nothing. As a kind of test, she mentioned she might get a jalapeno pastry, and instantly her sister wanted that too. Then she said she was not that hungry after all, and just as fast, neither was her sister. That was the moment it became undeniable. This was never about food. It was about mirroring.

It is worth pausing on how strange the family dynamic here actually is. This is not a parent managing a picky toddler. This is a teenager being expected to feed, manage, and problem solve for her younger sister’s eating habits, in front of two present, capable parents who instead turned around and blamed her for the outcome. The role she has apparently occupied for years, ordering for the whole family, anticipating her sister’s needs, absorbing the financial and emotional cost of a pattern she did not create, is a responsibility that was never really hers to carry.

Cleveland Clinic psychologist Dr. Eshleman has described what happens when a child ends up filling a role that belongs to a parent. She explains that parentification often looks like a child quietly being expected to manage things within the household, and that when those unspoken expectations are not met, the child ends up on the receiving end of frustration or blame rather than support (source: https://health.clevelandclinic.org/parentification).

That dynamic lines up almost exactly with what happened at Tim Hortons. The older sister had clearly been the default fixer of this family’s food ordering for years, a job nobody assigned her but everyone relied on anyway. The moment she stepped back and let the actual problem be visible, her sister’s hunger, her mother’s impatience, the absence of any real plan, her parents did not reassess the pattern. They aimed their frustration at the one person who had, for once, refused to absorb it.

None of this means the younger sister is simply being difficult on purpose. Several commenters raised the possibility that decision paralysis in front of a menu, and a strong pull to mirror someone else’s choices, can sometimes point to something more, whether that is anxiety, a processing difference, or simply a habit that calcified because nobody ever gently interrupted it. What is clear either way is that the responsibility for figuring that out belongs to the parents, not to a sibling who is still a kid herself.

Let's dive into the reactions from Reddit:

Reddit had plenty to say about this one. The response was overwhelmingly sympathetic toward the older sister, with many commenters expressing genuine confusion about why she was the one placing orders and enforcing consequences in the first place.

Shoeshoemagoo − I'm confused why our isn't your parent's responsibility to ensure she eats?

ItsMeMissi − NTAH. How old are you both and why are YOU tending to her needs rather than her parents? That’s…bizarre. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Longjumping-Wave-756 − You’re not the a__hole. The moment you said you “weren’t really hungry anymore” and she instantly wasn’t either proves she just wanted to mirror you, not eat.

Your parents are enabling the waste and then blaming you. Next time, calmly tell them, “I’ll order for myself, you handle her,” and step out of it.

DrTeethPhD − NTA Your parents need to stop enabling this nonsense.

Tartpop77 − Why do you usually order for your family? This whole family sounds a little . ..off

His_GoddessLove − Your parents should be handling this. Not you.

This isn't healthy behavior and something that should have been corrected a long time ago. You're absolutely NTA. Your parents are AH though. This is not your responsibility. You shouldn't...

Continual active parenting is lacking here, they should have circumvented this when it began and continued teaching her independent decisions a long time ago. They messed up. Now it's going...

Puzzleheaded-Cup7781 − Does she struggle with reading?

Cracker_Bites − NTA Excuse me, why are you being parentified here? Why are you coughing up for your sister?

Some ages would provide context, you're still living at home but that doesn't give us any indication any more as children can return to living with their parents for many...

Several pointed out, gently but firmly, that the real target of frustration should be the parents who let a three year pattern run unchecked, not the sibling who finally called it out.

Lizardgirl25 − NTA… your sister needs mental health help. That or I would just order what you know she will eat, and then order yourself different items.

Even if she objects tell her you know she doesn’t like what you like so stop denying herself what she wants. Your parents getting angry about her going hungry just...

Though she doesn’t need an intervention.

Obvious-Block6979 − Just throwing this on the table, I am not suggesting any sort of diagnosis as there is a lot more to it. My son used to do this...

I remember when he started asking her what he wanted? They were very close but it flummox me. In his mid teens he asked me for a ADHD diagnosis.

I had asked his teachers and Drs several times for years and was always told he was not a candidate.

When I finally got to the right place they indeed said he had it pretty bad. He was very difficult to diagnose. Very high IQ and no H component. It...

Now the fact that your sister chose not to eat is interesting as you did make a recommendation. Maybe just do some digging and ask her why she’s doing this.

Ask if she’d needs help for some reason. My son was about 10 when this started.

Maybe because e were not doing kids meals any more or because we were making fewer recommendations or that his that was changing. I don’t know but that’s when it...

Nobody in this story actually went hungry. The sister had a snack the moment she got home, proof that this was never really about an empty stomach. What got exposed at that Tim Hortons counter was a family habit that had quietly outgrown its excuse, and a teenager who, for the first time, refused to keep footing the bill for it. Was this simply a sister finally setting a boundary that was long overdue, or does the real reckoning still belong to the parents who let it get this far?
