AITA for Telling the Woman Next to Me on a Six-Hour Flight to Stop Talking to Me While I Was Working?

by Sunny Nguyen

in Social Issues

The six-hour flight from Denver to Boston was supposed to be productive.

The traveler had a client presentation scheduled for 9 a.m. the following morning, and there were still four hours of work left to finish. So, after settling into the flight, they opened their laptop, connected to the Wi-Fi, put on noise-canceling headphones, and immediately got to work.

It seemed like a fairly obvious signal: this wasn’t the time for conversation.

'My latest new client set the strictest rules I’ve ever heard. I obeyed every one of them. She still claimed I was the problem and lost her mind?'

Yesterday I had a new client who was referred to me, book a 90-minute mobile massage. She was very specific over text before I even showed up..

She told me exactly what she wanted:. • Deep tissue only. • Focus on her upper back, shoulders, and neck

“Do not check in with me at all. I hate when therapists keep asking if the pressure is okay. Just do the work.”.

“I don’t want any small talk either. Just quiet.”.

“When the time is up, that’s it. No free extras.”. I confirmed everything back to her so there was zero confusion. She replied “Perfect, see you then.”

I get there, set up, and go over the same list one more time in person just to be safe. She nods and says “Yep, that’s exactly what I want....

I put my headphones in to get some much needed audiobook time (one ear only so I could still hear if she actually needed something), started the timer on my...

No check-ins. No “how’s the pressure?” No small talk. Just the exact work she requested.

Every time I felt her body tense or shift I kept going at the same pressure she had asked for. No adjustments. No questions.

When the 90 minutes hit, I stopped. Immediately. I didn’t offer the free scalp massage or hot towels I normally throw in. I just said, “That’s time.”

She sat up looking annoyed and said, “Wait, that was it? The pressure felt hard toward the end and you never even checked on me. Most therapists give a little...

I looked at her and calmly replied, “You specifically told me not to check in, not to ask about pressure, and that when the time was up that was it...

She got quiet for a second then said, “Well I didn’t mean it like that. You should have known to check anyway. I’m not tipping for that.”

I smiled and said, “That’s fine. The session is paid for already. You can get dressed and I’ll be outside.”

She started packing up her things while muttering about how I was “too rigid” and “not customer service oriented.”

I just kept packing my stuff in silence the same way she had requested the entire session.. I have never felt more at peace ending a session..

Was I supposed to ignore the very clear rules she set and somehow read her mind instead?

Unfortunately, the woman sitting beside them didn’t see it that way.

Not long after takeoff, she tapped them on the arm and asked whether they worked in tech. She had apparently noticed the stickers on their laptop.

They politely explained that they worked in marketing, but were currently trying to finish something for a deadline. Then they put their headphones back on and returned to the presentation.

Ten minutes later, the woman tapped them again.

This time, she wanted to know if they had watched a particular Netflix show because one of the laptop stickers reminded her of its logo.

Again, the response was polite.

No, they hadn’t seen it, and they really needed to concentrate.

The traveler turned slightly toward the window and went back to work.

Most people would have understood the message.

The woman apparently didn’t.

A short while later, she tapped them for a third time. This time, she began telling them about her daughter, who worked in marketing, and started pulling up photographs on her phone.

At that point, the traveler decided that subtle hints weren’t working.

They stopped typing and politely explained the situation.

They had paid for the Wi-Fi specifically so they could finish the presentation, they were on a deadline, and they really couldn’t chat right now. They ended by saying that they hoped the woman understood.

She finally stopped talking.

But instead of simply accepting the boundary, she called over a flight attendant.

The woman complained that her seatmate had been “aggressive and hostile” toward her and asked to be moved.

The flight attendant approached the traveler and asked whether everything was okay.

The traveler explained that they simply needed to work.

There hadn’t been an argument, yelling, insults, or confrontation. They had already tried politely ending the conversation several times.

The flight attendant apparently accepted the explanation and moved the woman to another seat, which happened to be a middle seat.

As the woman left, the traveler overheard her complain that “young people are so rude these days.”

Ironically, the person trying to work had been the one who repeatedly had to defend their right not to socialize.

Later, the man sitting across the aisle offered his own opinion.

He thought the traveler should have simply humored the woman for twenty minutes because she was probably lonely.

The traveler’s girlfriend agreed that the response had been a little too blunt. She suggested that pretending to have a headache might have been a better way to end the conversation.

But the traveler couldn’t help wondering why a fake excuse was necessary.

They had already communicated that they were working.

They were wearing headphones.

They were actively typing.

They had explained that they were under a deadline.

And they had politely asked not to be disturbed.

Wasn’t that enough?

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

Greywatcher − There would not have been any way to make her happy.

1hero_no_cape − Some people aren't happy unless they're miserable. This customer sounds like one of those people.

nychockeyman − She planned on not tipping, no matter what.

notsostablediffuser − I bet she's a pleasure to date.

Sp00k_x − Well. .. I for one dont know what she was expecting, she stipulated exactly what she wanted and confirmed twice. ..

Viperbunny − She didn't want to tip you. She was going to find a reason.

rocketshipray − A mobile massage therapist who actually *listens* to requests? Please tell me you’re in the southeastern US! (If yes, I would like to PM to see if you...

Gonpostlscott − Wow. She sets firm rules. You confirmed the firm rules. You follow the firm rules. She’s not happy you firmly followed the firm rules set by her. 🤔...

Medium-Sized-Jaque − Who would ask for no extras? That's like going to Five Guys and demanding to not get bag fries.

R-Dragon_Thunderzord − I wonder how many other people she tries this no-win scenario bs on.

The Reddit community overwhelmingly thought so.

One commenter pointed out that if the man across the aisle had been close enough to hear the entire interaction, he was close enough to “humor” the woman himself.

Another said that if headphones and an obvious work deadline weren’t enough to discourage her, pretending to have a headache probably wouldn’t have worked either.

Several people also focused on the woman’s accusation that the traveler was rude.

After all, she was the one who repeatedly interrupted someone who had clearly indicated that they didn’t want to talk.

One commenter summed it up simply: entertaining a stranger on a flight isn’t anyone’s responsibility.

Another noted that the woman’s loneliness, while understandable, didn’t create an obligation for someone else to sacrifice several hours of their work.

Someone else shared a story about Boston culture, explaining that they had once met people who considered it rude that strangers on a Boston train didn’t speak to them. To the commenter, that was almost the opposite of how commuting culture worked in Boston, where leaving someone alone could be considered perfectly normal.

The discussion also raised an interesting point about boundaries.

The traveler wasn’t asking the woman to be quiet because they disliked her personally. They were trying to meet a professional deadline.

They hadn’t snapped at her during the first interaction.

They hadn’t snapped during the second.

Even the third time, they didn’t insult her or tell her off. They simply made their boundary explicit.

Yet somehow, being direct was interpreted as hostility.

That left the traveler wondering whether they had handled the situation badly.

But the general consensus was clear: they hadn’t.

The woman may have been lonely. She may have wanted conversation. She may even have been genuinely hurt by the rejection.

But none of that meant the traveler had to abandon their work and spend part of a six-hour flight entertaining a stranger.

In the end, the traveler didn’t demand anything unreasonable. They simply wanted to be left alone long enough to finish an important presentation.

Sometimes, “I’m working and I can’t talk right now” really should be enough.
